OpenWebUI is a great AI toolbox for personal or family use. They manage to get a pretty user friendly UI set up that can tie into both local and remote AI servers - with some caveats. The support for Speech-To-Text is one such, where the only local support is for their built-in Faster Whisper server, which only...
NMG 2026 results are out. If you are a grantee, congratulations. This is the 9th edition of 2026 and the biggest both in terms of total grant and the number of grantees. Initial emails have been sent. Today, I started sending some introductory emails so fund transfers can happen. The actual fund transfer is from...
When I'm writing documentation in Markdown I like, where possible, to mark up keys with the <kbd> tag. This was the reason for one of the updates to BlogMore: I'd not done any good default markup for <kbd> and the moment I realised, I knew I had to fix it. Now that I'm writing more on this blog, and especially about...
A group of birders I joined recently at Whelan Lake in Oceanside While I’ve been birdwatching for a long time, this year I’ve also enjoyed sharing birding with others. So for my birthday, I’m inviting my friends and family to join me outside throughout the month. In May I’ll be hosting several birding walks people...
In this ~30-minute video, I talk about the relationship between violence and safe spaces. How violence carves a space out of the wilderness and how it keeps it free from danger. I bring up several examples and also discuss the concept of inevitability as one of the three fates. The point is to accept the world...
It was bound to happen. For months, I’ve done my best to prevent this, but eventually, my patience and tolerance weren’t enough. Here I am, writing a post about how I finally decided to ditch Safari as my main browser, and replace it with third-party options. This change was a slow process somehow — spanning a...
So I play Stardew Valley on the phone and on my iPad usually, and am used to some things that are phone app only. But now I’ve bought a Switch lite, I’ve also installed the game there, and boy oh boy, it’s an adjustment. The main thing is that the phone app automagically switches tools and the Switch app doesn’t....
Being consistent and sticking with a routine is something I only seriously started doing like a year ago. For most of my life I would start things with insane enthusiasm, to the point that it would take up all my time and mental space. Then I would quickly burn out, grow bored, and then abandon whatever it was I was...
https://hono.dev/ is a lot of fun to use, in large part due to the simplicity of the tooling. It feels a bit like writing one-file-per-page web applications in PHP or python and dropping them on a web server somewhere. I used to do this in ~2012 when I was just learning to code. Hono apps are just server-side JSX. I...
I am a bit late today because I had a rush assignment to take care of. But now that it has been taken care of, I present for your enjoyment today’s edition of Pook-Emu Bee links (note that “we” will be off until Sunday or Monday since tomorrow’s links will be packaged in The Newsletter Leaf Journal.) 1. Massive fire...
April 2026. Stockport. Back at Stockport Travelodge (£37.99, wouldn’t buy a pie, pint and programme at the Emirates) after the game I decided I wasn’t paying a fiver for WiFi, and the only watchable thing on the telly was “The Story of the Bee Gees“. Did you know they’re named after a famous UK band from the early...
I was born after 9/11. There is a story, maybe I made it up, that my parents where visiting my grandparents to tell them of the pregnancy when the second plane hit. I don't remember how old I was when I first learned about 9/11, and I don’t remember when I realized just how significant that event was. But I do...
Read Mark's story, The Lion Slide, now!Was there any particular park you had in mind while writing this story? It’s an amalgam of two parks near where I live. Were there any good ghost stories or local legends where you grew up?I asked my wife about this and she told me about St Wistan. In 849 AD, after he was...
Back in 2016 my wife and I spent Memorial Day weekend in Walla Walla in eastern Washington. We both wanted to explore that area for a while and the long weekend at the beginning of summer was the perfect occasion. We started at Palouse Falls where we camped for one night then spent rest of the trip in downtown Walla...
This post is a part of my word-vomit series. Feel free to skip it.I am ruminating over my writing style, especially after I restarted the word-vomit series. What I feel is that my style of writing a post and word-vomit is very similar. I share my experiences in both types of posts. Moreover, despite calling a post...

Number 3 of the seasonal Bonk Wave releases is here, and it’s a biggy. This time the community collected 54 tracks in total, spread over 3 albums. The amount of tracks submitted are starting to make us think we’ll have to come up with some other way of managing this. At some point, that’s just too much music to...
Most of us are strongly opposed to animal cruelty. Some are more in a grey area where it's okay to hit your animal as punishment to get them to behave how you want them to behave. I find this cruel, but I understand we're not all on the same page on that. But I think we generally agree that it's not okay to just be...
The Marc Sanders Foundation has announced that its 2026 Prize in Political Philosophy has been awarded to Adam Kern (University of San Diego) and Jacob Nebel (Princeton University). Adam Kern & Jake Nebel They received the prize for their piece, “Migration and Social Population Ethics“. Here’s the abstract: This...
Me di vergüenza.Las relaciones...
I always have a notebook going. It's always a single-subject, college-ruled spiral notebook. I fill about one a month. I buy them in July during back to school sales, when I can get them in bulk. It's always just one notebook. I use a tab system to keep track of each notebook's contents by broad categories -...
This time I actually managed to fly rather well! I didn't play that long since it's already late, but I decided to take a Kestrel out in the void and see what happens. After some time of roaming through systems and making LP farmers shake in their boots with just my spooky presence, I managed to catch someone!...
Had a few fuck ups before finally making something neat & usable. The fuck ups likely happened because I was tired & rushing! I still need a good method of punching the holes for the cover and pages -- I'll try making a template out of cardboard instead of cardstock.
Tomorrow's the big day (April 25) when we help our friends open their MAKE IT space in Northside. (If YOU can't make it and want a shirt, I've got a link inside) +Reply via email
2026-04-24Hello!I fell asleep in the middle of a call again... this keeps happening. I didn't have any work to do anyway, and at least I woke up early to attend today's "booking day" at school. Many friends of mine are pursuing arts degrees in college, and arts careers beyond college. I'm not one of them, but I...
There is a version of the AI coding conversation that feels way too casual for what is actually at stake. A prompt goes in. A working app comes out. The demo looks clean. The login page loads. The API responds. The build passes. Everyone moves on. That is exactly where I think the trouble starts. “Vibe coding” has...
Recently, while scrolling through pictures that I took last year on my phone, this one caught my eye. I photographed this at some kind of design exhibition. I don't remember the topic anymore, or how this exhibit tied into the exhibition as a whole. However, both back then and now, when looking at the picture again,...
Yesterday I came across this post: The creative journey is not an inconvenience. In it, Moody Warlock says: The journey to create art IS part of the art. It's not dispensable. It's not an inconvenience. It's the way we create meaning for ourselves. It's the method by which we grow and understand both ourselves and...

This is Winston Fathead. He died yesterday. He arrived at our house in September 2014 - this is him, on the day of his arrival, sleeping on the chair that was reserved for our previous dog, Wookie. He was a rescue from the RSPCA (they had called him "Bullseye" but we immediately knew he was a "Winston") and all we...
I am only human: books and an aging dog; what was I supposed to do? Reader beware: grief over the loss of a spouse; depression; parental abandonment; bullying (implied); elderly dog’s death. Also: spoilers in the review. Dog Person, by Camille Pagán I am not altogether sure why I was invited to read this ARC, as it...
Apple and Porsche both figured out the same secret that the cheapest product in the lineup can be the most exciting. It just takes a little intention.
There’s a category of “plain text” or “ASCII” diagramming and UI design tools: Mockdown – works immediately on the web, even on mobile Wiretext – works on the web, but desktop only Monodraw – a Mac app I believe these are used by people who prefer intentionally limited visual choices, for low-key diagramming to put...

Read on the website: GESS is a Soviet / Russian standard for stenography (fast handwriting.) I want to use it for both Russian and English. And I dare say it works!
I made a randomart artwork, an illustration of a ssh fingerprint for a public and private key pair.
A Go closure holds a live reference to whatever it captures, not a snapshot. Real examples of where this trips people up, and how to keep it boring.
Since I bought my new laptop, a used Dell Latitude 5430, I have been searching for alternative displays, as the display it came with was the 250-nit version, so not very bright, and the color coverage was also quite limited. A few days ago, while again doing a price comparison, I found a listing of the official...
The rabbit hole for journaling can go deep. You can use different formats, different journaling techniques, you can even start a bullet journal, which has its own practices. The tools you use for writing can also change the experience, for example the paper size and texture. And don't get me started on pens. Many...
The great danger is to stand motionless on the bank as the river of your life rushes by. It is not easy, learning how to stop waiting and start living; not easy not to waste your life; not easy knowing whether or not how you spend your time and mind and love is worthy of the improbable fact that you, against the...
The "Historia Langobardorum" is the oldest chronicle relevant to the history of Venice. It probably dates to the 780s or 790s.
Tomorrow is Independent Bookstore Day! It’s always such a fun day to get out and celebrate the need for indie bookshops in our communities. The goal is simple – just get out, if you can. Here’s a handy map where you can type in your zip code to see if any of the 2000+ participating shops are near … Continue reading...
I started my self-hosting journey in 2001 when I bought my first desktop. Before then I used the family computers (a 286 and 486 that we found in a dumpster). I went to university without my own computer and used the school computers for anything that needed it. It wasn't until that summer that I bought my own. Fast...
It astounds me that I have never blogged about my love of Radio Paradise. You know how much I love music and radio in particular, especially if you read my Desert Island Discs post. One of my oldest friends introduced me to this internet radio station when K and I were expecting our first child. As each song came...
1. Problem statement: You access a Windows machine, while running on Linux using Citrix. You can no longer type characters like ~, |, [, ]. These are characters where you must press the key Alt Gr on a German keyboard. 2. Solution. The following configuration added to ~/.ICAClient/wfclient.ini solves the issue:...
I once again have a functioning 8-track player, so now I can play my grandfather’s old Sons of the Pioneers1 cartridges as well as knock off Monkees and Beatles groups doing covers. Yay! It involved opening up my Lear Jet H-300, poking around a bit, and finally determining it was just a belt that needed replacing. I...
Unfortunately I have my first driving lesson today (in the simulator!) clashing with my first IndieWebCamp event (since I’ve joined). The 2-day event is in-person and held at Düsseldorf (remote participation is available!) I’m really excited to see the presentations and demos from the talented and cool humans part...
I. The Lower Roadworks The siren found Esra in the dark, the way it always did—not as sound first, but as vibration in the bunk frame, a low hum that climbed through the steel crossbar and into the bones of her jaw before it became the wail that opened every shift. She was already sitting up by the time it hit full...
