Some time ago, I tried to use my web browser with JavaScript turned off by default. The experiment didn’t last long, and my attempt at a privacy-protecting, pain-free web experience failed. Too many websites rely on JavaScript, which made this type of web browsing rather uncomfortable.
This 25-minute segment on MKBHD’s Waveform podcast (video or audio, segment starts at 40:21) is from November 2024, and is a nice counterpart to the post about favourite well-made apps and sites. The original theme is “what is an app that you use all the time, and like to use, but is actually a bad app?” but it...
If you're near Cincinnati, come down to Northside on Saturday April 25th and print your own 'Here to Make Friends' t-shirt. ⊕Reply via email
Harriet entered the building through the main lobby doors and checked her watch. Satisfied, she bypassed the elevators, and walked purposefully to the stairwell. The stairs would take longer, but she savored the anticipation. She clutched a tiny foil wrapper in her hand, and for the first time in months, Harriet...
TL;DR: Armed with new powers to rein in the worst excesses of mobile's duopolists, antitrust bodies around the world are struggling to find their footing, and an incurious tech press is letting it pass with nary a nod. Browsers are app stores too, but that perspective is almost entirely absent from the antitrust...
I’ve recently got myself an Elgato Stream Deck, and although it doesn’t natively support Linux, there’s a nice app called Boatswain that does the trick (not to be confused with the OCI container monitoring app of the same name). I tried to connect Boatswain to my Flatpak-installed version of OBS Studio (of which...
Since this weekend it's Easter and tomorrow I'm off work, I'm posting these weeknotes a day early. Tomorrow the plan is to do absolutely no computer touching. Tomorrow I'll wake up, bring my daughter to school, go for a run, play a video game or read a book and pick up my daughter around noon. The best thing that...
March 2026. Sheffield. Sheffield is a great city but I can’t spend a whole day there. Mid-afternoon on Monday I headed down to the station, intending to bring you exciting reports from, I dunno, Retford or Adwick. But there was “trouble beyond Worksop“, and my sister called, and I abandoned my mission at the Rutland...
Petals from the cherry trees along the Philosopher's Path collect downstream, forming a pink canvas for a tree's shadow.
A “Man From the Future” arrives at a diner in Los Angeles where he must recruit the precise combination of disgruntled patrons to join him on a one-night quest to save the world from the terminal threat of a rogue artificial intelligence. What a fun quirky little movie! Sure, it’s mixing like 6-7 (SIXSEVEEENN)...
The denote-sequence package is an optional extension to denote that empowers users to write “sequence notes”, else “folgezettel”, in the style of Niklas Luhmann. Sequence notes are created in relation to other notes, as parent, child, or sibling. denote-sequence communicates such relationships by writing a...
Claude Code has helped me create a quality-of-life improvement for Obsidian that I thought others might make use of, so I am here to share that with you today. It's true: There are 48 active plugins installed in my Obsidian vault. Alarming to some, completely unacceptable to others. None of these plugins however are...
I have no connection to the authors of the Superpowers plugin for Claude Code, but I have been raving about it to everyone I talk to. Using Claude Code with Superpowers is so much more productive and the features it builds are so much more correct than with stock Claude Code. I cannot recommend it enough. Earlier,...
They were back in the lab, and Ada was trying to convince them that they had been making progress. "Let me try again, we were really getting somewhere last time," she said. Utsab handed over the device. Wemly could tell when he was frustrated, and had previously described Ada's technical ability as "like a...
So, again, I’ve had a slightly fucked year so far. I don’t remember if any of me specified we spent most of January with a sinus infection. I know the mild kidney stone that was bad mentally that fucked with our enjoyment of this year’s Healing Together conference was mentioned before, and this month’s injury was...
Marcin Wichary brings attention to this lovely dialog in ClarisWorks from 1997: He quips: this breaks the rule of button copy being fully comprehensible without having to read the surrounding strings first, perhaps most well-known as the “avoid «click here»” rule. Never Register/Register Later/Register Now would...
B is for Brainstorming Have you got “hopes, dreams, and goals” for your blog? If not, why are you doing this? Im doing this because its a challenge. The warning from this post was that writing for writing sake can cause burnout, but im not sure. Not writing causes burnout as well. Those thoughts and words never find...
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here in daily posts. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. Artemis II astronauts have two Microsoft Outlooks running, neither of which works, 404 Media. Some earthly problems aren’t solved just by leaving Earth. It’s not yet known if...
Right in the middle of a set of squats, it happened. A small twinge in my lower back. Not severe, but sensitive enough to quickly put the weights back in the rack. A few minutes' rest and then try again, I thought. But it was too tender. I skipped the last set. After the core section, during which my back actually...
“In the early 1970s, fewer than 10% of articles cited any empirical sources. However, by the 2020s, this grew to over 50%.” That finding is from a new study by Michael Prinzing (Wake Forest University), “The Role of Empirical Evidence in Philosophy,” forthcoming in Synthese. Prinzing used a GPT model to examine the...
Kunming was the best first impression of Yunnan with its mild weather, delicious food, and rich history.
Last night I attended the Indieweb’s Homebrew Website Club Meeting! It was lots of fun and I learned a lot more about Webmentions and the human.json protocol Beto Dealmeida wrote in the past weeks. Website Changes A few months ago I asked on Mastodon about integrating Webmentions and Gerben Jacobs was kind enough to...
2026-04-02Hello!After watching James Popsys's video on the three shot rule, I thought I might give it a shot.I tried to capture the same scene, but from three different perspectives: wide, middle, and close-up. This is that wide shot; the middle will be tomorrow, and I'm thinking the close-up should be thrown in the...
A bummer post about politics, insidious "good news only" accounts and being racially perceived in 2026 (a few good cat photos though) This morning I realized I haven't done a non-pokemon post on this blog in a while, and mostly I can attribute that to work having been chaotic but then I got sick and I frankly didn't...
It's confusing. You applied to a PhD program in philosophy in the U.S. You haven't been admitted. You haven't been rejected. You're in limbo. Let me explain and offer some advice. Yield-Based vs. Seats-Based Admissions Yield-based. Some departments -- the ones with wise high-level administrators -- aim for a target...

“Sometimes I’m sad and I don’t know why. It’s just a cloud that comes along and covers me up.” “Grief, when it comes, is nothing like we expect it to be,” Joan Didion wrote after losing the love of her life. “The people we most love do become a physical part of us,” Meghan O’Rourke observed in her magnificent memoir...
The North Westerly flow continues with another day of lethargic hail showers. It was either way too warm in the sunshine or way too cold under the showers, and that triggered more wardrobe changes than your average Swifty event. In between the showers I spotted a Little Egrit, which I first thought was a Heron from...
So, yesterday I wrote more about pens and how I keep buying them. I need to stop buying stuff, not just pens. I’ve tried to do the low-buy or no-buy challenges in the past, but I’ve failed every time. This time is going to be different. I hope, anyway. My goal is to go at least the next six months without buying...
Following on from yesterday's release, I've bumped blogmore.el to v2.5. The main change to the package is the thing I mentioned yesterday about the toggle of the draft status. The draft toggle yesterday was pretty simple, with it working like: If there is no draft frontmatter, draft: true is added If there is any...
Right now as I'm writing this, humans are travelling to the moon for the first time within my lifetime. I'm not the biggest space nerd, but spaceflight and especially the Apollo moon program have always kind of fascinated me. And so I'm loosely following their journey to see how it's going and how far they've...
Couples who don't have children all do one thing together: play board games. I feel like that's all me and my husband and all our friends do when we're together. Someone cooks and makes drinks, while the men get way too into the game and the women step outside to smoke and talk. One time, my husband and I were...
I. In 1998, biologist E.O. Wilson diagnosed the human condition: “Paleolithic emotions, medieval institutions, and god-like technology.” The formulation endures because it identifies architectural mismatch—perception systems calibrated for immediate threats operating machinery that alters planetary climate, within...
I fell asleep! To be fair, it was scheduled for around 23:30 BST on a school night and I was dog tired. My eyelids won the battle. I managed to watch the lift-off replays this morning, however. I missed the stop-clock event and slept through an issue with the toilet?? So, I didn’t miss too much, and can observe the...
Quoted Toothpaste Expiration Dates by Nicholas A. Ferrell (The New Leaf Journal) How am I going to eat all this toothpaste before it expires? This is the 59th entry in Nicholas A. Ferrell’s long-running Justin and Justina dialogue series. Inspired by a true story (N.A. Ferrell, who is me writing in the third person,...
Accessibility overlays (sometimes called ‘accessibility plugins’ or ‘accessibility widgets’) are tools placed on websites that claim to improve accessibility. They usually appear as a small icon on the side or in a corner of a website’s viewport. Clicking on them usually presents a set of options such as the ability...
For the last several days the dog has been under the weather. She's been lethargic, miserable looking, and melancholy. I had hoped she would perk up in a day or two, and on Tuesday she seemed to have bounced back to her usual cheery, always happy, wagging-tail dog. On Wednesday morning she looked more depressed than...
Dark River is a mysterious assassin organization which we first saw in The Blood of Youth. In Blood River, when the Patriarch of Dark River is severely poisoned. This presents a golden opportunity for the three Blood River families (Su, Xie, and Mu) to seize the “Dragon Sword” which will give them control over the...
When John Ruskin first visited the Alps, at the age of fourteen, his father took care to entrust him to a reliable and expert guide, Joseph Marie Couttet, with whom the young Ruskin soon formed a close bond, which lasted throughout Couttet's life. The Alpine guide even accompanied Ruskin to Italy, to attend to...
