In The joy of incremental website improvements, I reflected on the idea of building personal websites incrementally:Making incremental improvements to one's personal website is a joy. Your site can evolve at your own pace, and as you learn. You don't need to set out with a grand ambition. This website has been built...
A busier month, not just at home, where we entertained guests from Chicago on a memorable weekend where the Shakespeare stood out as exemplifying what Sheffield pubs are all about, but also abroad. I needed those 3 nights in northern Germany as the relentless journeys up and down the A1 between Sheffield and...
Gonna keep rolling with the beach photos because I know “May gray” is just a month away. Gonna take all I can get for now.
This is an entry from my journal where I comment on how I learn by observing the phenomena around me. Another rainy day goes by. This is the first wet winter at the hut. The previous two were quite dry, foreshadowing the droughts that followed for the rest of the year. Last winter was especially harsh in this...
April 1, 2026 The Trillionaire Problem Scott Galloway: "But Musk owns roughly 42% of SpaceX, so this IPO could make him the first recorded trillionaire in history. And on Polymarket, the odds that he'll become a trillionaire this year are 71%. So there's almost a three-in-four chance, according to a lot of people,...
I've just released a little update to blogmore.el, adding blogmore-toggle-draft as a command. This came about in connection with the feature request that resulted in BlogMore v2.7.0 being released. While I don't personally use draft for my posts, I can see the utility of it and if someone were to happen to use...
These aren’t polished essays or tidy aphorisms. They’re scraps I’ve carried around this month—half-heard thoughts, borrowed lines, sudden recognitions—that refused to be forgotten. Zuihitsu literally means “following the brush,” and while my version is shorter and scrappier than the classical form, the impulse feels...
As Apple celebrates its fiftieth birthday, we celebrate the spirit of its formation, when people who loved computers started making great computers to inspire more people to love computers. That spirit is difficult to find in the tech business today. Immense scale, soulless optimization, and an insatiable thirst for...
Depending on the platform and audience, discussions around AI can be pretty heated. I probably don’t have to tell you that. But there is one particular thing about this whole back and forth that makes it really complicated but also quite predictable to be happening. Matt summarized this very well in his post: Its...
Happy April! Here are a few photos from my phone from the last month with neither rhyme nor reason to the theme. Thanks for reading this post via RSS! Let me know your thoughts by sending me an email: rss@thomasrigby.com.

This paper argues that several of the most persistent internal difficulties in Leibniz's mature metaphysics, the tension between the complete individual concept and contingency, the underspecified relationship between monadic autonomy and divine sustenance, the explanatory structure of pre-established harmony, and...
One of the 35 girls among the 2,000 students at Mexico’s National Preparatory School, Frida Kahlo (July 6, 1907–July 13, 1954) was fifteen when she met Alejandro Gómez Arias. Both were passionate and erudite, both were members of the anarchist student group known as Los Cachuchas for the pointed cloth caps they wore...
Origami is three-dimensional paper mechanics, testing math and science principles. I hope to experiment; To rediscover a medium once dear to my heart, after years relegated to folding transient gum wrappers every chance I got. As such, there is a limit to how many folds a single piece of paper can withstand,...
I've never been much into fashion and, for the most part of my life, have not been very good at "presenting myself." I don't think I've ever given anyone shit for it, but I think somewhere deep down, I held the opinion that caring about your appearance or style beyond the bare minimum was superficial, consumerist...
2026-04-01Hello! As I predicted, I couldn't change anything for April Fools.Although, a friend of mine has made a brilliant extension for Google Chrome (and Firefox) to detect rickroll links — any URL directing you to Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley will be flagged. Hope it helps; be suspicious of things too...
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here in daily posts. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. Nextcloud’s fork of OnlyOffice violates the AGPLv3 license, It’s FOSS. Nextcloud (German) and the hosting company Ionos created the Euro-Office fork, citing a lack of...
The year continues to move at an incredible pace, and I continue to engage with so many forms of media, keeping track is starting to get a bit confusing! Nothing impossible to manage of course, it’s fun to have so many more things going on. Podcasts Once again, my podcast listening has been diminishing this year, as...
Cherry blossoms along the small bridge linking Nakanoshima Island south to Arashiyama. Kodak Ektar film turns this into a pastoral image of yesteryear.
The shrubbery is coming to life. This is new. I just keep taking the same photos over and over thinking, this is surely prime crabapple blossoms. ⊕Currently Listening: Hayden Pedigo “Carthage”Reply via email
a half-assed review -- Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed (1994)"> Series Intro Because I have a lot of time on my hands (I do not), I’ve decided it’s a good thing to start playing all the Need For Speed titles in 2026 and see how they hold up in this millennium. This was supposed to be a bigger post at some...
A is for Aspirations What are your blogging aspirations? For me blogging is a way to be creative. I don’t have many aspirations about it except to share tidbits about books ive read or techniques ive learned. Thats it. I was personally inspired by people who learned and wrote in the open and even if this blog only...
Check out As in guillotine... for more. In which I briefly comment on the books I read each month, so a few years from now when I’m trying to remember one of them, I’ll be able to find it here. Since I’m a media omnivore, it also includes games, movies, and any other media of note that I engaged with. Do we have...
Install minimal Recoll on FreeBSD 15 Recoll is a full text search application. Recoll is based on the very capable Xapian search engine library. The FreeBSD package comes with a ton of dependencies, which is great for use on your desktop, but can be a bit of overkill for non-graphical systems. Minimal install The...
"Scuola della Passione" (School of the Passion) from the Gli abiti de veneziani (1754) by Giovanni Grevembroch, translated by René Seindal.
“AI” exists to disenfranchise labor. That’s what it’s for. Regardless of how good these stochastic systems are or the flaws they have just being able to point at the non-unionized robot whenever the employees ask for raises or anything really is incredibly valuable for business. The existence of “AI” and the...
Slide from Hannah Fry’s presentation at the Gartner CIO Leadership Forum A really tough week, mentally and physically. I spent the first two days at the Gartner CIO Leadership Forum, an event that I really like as it is relatively small, resulting in you bumping into the same faces in different sessions. I felt all...
When tutoring high-school students in maths and physics, I sometimes stumble across interesting problems. In this scenario, a fisherman seeks to determine the fastest route from his location on the shore to his boat out in the water. What I find interesting here is the change of perspective that makes solving the...
Apparently, Apple likes those big-ass round corners so much that they have decided to go all-in with what they’re calling “circular” design. Here’s an example I found for TextEdit.
It’s April Fools Day—a day of jokey trickery, of practical jokes. Unlike in year’s past (2025, 2024, 2023, 2022…) I have no jokey post. Depending on how you feel about that I’d like to say either “I’m sorry” or “You’re welcome.” I thought about soliciting examples of great practical jokes in philosophy, but of...
Years ago, a few friends, fellow students and I had a subscription that let you go to the cinema as often as you liked for a fixed monthly fee. And we made good use of it: on weekday evenings, preceded by a regular visit to the local American specialties restaurant. On weekends, when we had time. And even on...
“Be the change you want to see in the world.” It's a quote that's often misattributed to Gandhi. There doesn't seem to be a consensus on who said it, but that doesn't make it any less of a good quote. And it's something I've been thinking about a lot lately and trying to make some changes with it in mind. “I wish...
The New Leaf Journal’s resident fictional dialogue duo, Justin and Justina, found themselves at a discount store. Coincidentally, both of them needed toothpaste. The Digital Rights in Asia-Pacific Assembly (DRAPAC) 2026 is an important gathering of digital rights advocates, policymakers, activists, and technologists dedicated to discussing and addressing pressing digital rights issues in the Asia-Pacific region. I'm very much excited for this year's DRAPAC, and I am...
Book: 5/5 stars. One of my favorites of 2022 (Sci-Fi): Amaze. You my friend. (This was my review in goodreads back then.) Fast-forward 3.5 years (»): Movie: 10/10. Excellent adaptation. 🇨🇦 Sorry, I don’t know how to write reviews. I’ll leave that to others: […] It was the same great experience as with The Martian...
I spent some time reading the 2026 Cyber Protect Report, and the biggest thing that stuck with me was not AI, nation-state actors, or some brand-new attack technique. It was the reminder that most organizations are still getting burned by the same old problems. Weak authentication. Slow patching. Overprivileged...
A bunch of us were in Geneva this week for a meeting of Ecma’s Executive Committee—my first Ecma meeting since becoming President. Most of the ExeCom were there in person: Andrew, Ayla, Jochen, Mikhail, and myself, along with Samina, Aki, and the rest of the Secretariat. Chris, Patrick, Peter, and Ross heroically...
Fifty years ago today, two guys from California pulled what was one of the more long-game April Fool’s pranks ever: they founded a company called Apple Computer. They were going to sell programmable circuit boards to people who wanted such a thing. Their headquarters were in a garage. If Apple Computer wasn’t...

I’ve been trying to keep up with posts and celebrations related to Apple’s fiftieth birthday and it’s been a fun trip down memory lane. I had been planning on writing something encapsulating all of this, but chances are, someone somewhere has covered Apple’s history more in-depth and better than I can in a single...
Last month, when two of Melbourne’s larger parkrun events were closed for the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix 2026 and associated works in Albert Park, I was asked, “How many parkruns can you get to in Victoria by public transport?” I knew, from contributing to projects like the Running Challenges Chrome Extension,...
We are L-2:07:30 on the Artemis II launch. I am sitting at Gremlin's house so we can watch the launch and I can blog about it at the same time. (Gremlin is making dinner. He is Scully to my Mulder for the purposes of this evening's space nerdery. No space ghosts please. If you are unfamiliar with the reference, see:...
Yesterday, I woke up in the morning and decided to build myself a Bongo Cat.
Today is April 1. It is both April Fools and the first day of Passover (happy Passover to any Jewish readers!). I do not have a new April Fools joke prepared, but maybe there will be something April Fools-related in this edition of Pook-Emu Bee, Links from around the web 1. Astrophotograph-ingLast night was the first clear night in about a week in Marlborough, New Zealand. So I hopped onto the lawn with my DSLR and my EF 75-300mm II lens (zoomed in to ~80mm from what I remember) and took a crack and photographing the Carina Nebula. This is what I ended up with: It's something like...
I have the tendency to throw all my ambitions and resolutions overboard if another topic/thing fully captivates me. I strive for balance in my life. I feel best when my day is split up in many small activities that do not fully consume me. This works for some time until something enters my life that leaves all the...
