January 2026. Sheffield. Enough of me, I’m sure you’re all keen to know how Mrs RM is getting on with her 0.0 January. Well, she holds on to the lie that alcohol-free beer tastes just like the real thing, and was ready to have temptation placed in her way with a Sunday in Kelham Island. Kelham gets new housing by...
This is an entry from my journal. It is about how I am inspired to always put my best self forward. Minutes past nine. I just returned home from my final walk of the day. The temperature is hovering around 0 ℃. There is some snow at the highest peaks, though not enough for skiing. Tonight is especially humid. I...
A photo frame sits on the guest bed, unplugged and facing the wrong way. It takes thirty seconds to move it to a drawer. No conversation needed. The person who does this has forgiven the gift-giver—not by feeling warmth toward them, but by no longer expecting them to be different. The work continues because the...
“Our neurons must be used … not only to know but also to transform knowledge; not only to experience but also to construct.” “Principles are good and worth the effort only when they develop into deeds,” Van Gogh wrote to his brother in a beautiful letter about talking vs. doing and the human pursuit of greatness....
Hello everyone, I hope you are all staying safe and warm! Texas and the rest of the southern United States is experiencing freezing weather right now, and everything is closing early. We are absolutely not equipped to handle snow and ice, and are complete wimps when it gets too threatening out, so everyone I know is...
Last year, I made a post called "My theme for 2025". Inchwyrm's post about the year of the wizard reminded me I should do another one for this year. My 2025 theme was 'learning'. I think I have managed that pretty well, even if it wasn't exactly the things I mentioned in the post. I just cannot make time for The...
I wrote a rant about shitty AI tools this week, and you'll be delighted to know that I've spared you the pain of reading it.
Small things that take more conscious thought than they’re given credit for. Being an amateur at something with intention and passion Remembering to water the plants in the morning Choosing the right poster for a room Choosing the right song for a specific situation Commuting without the dread Idea taken from...
One year to the day, I published Trump 2024 vs Bush 2004: State-by-State on The New Leaf Journal. The concept for the article was the striking similarity between the Presidential Election victories of Donald Trump in 2024 and George W. Bush in 2004 in terms of states won, notwithstanding notable differences in their...
I've never been much of a classical music fan. As a kid, I always thought it was boring, slow and above all just a big piece of old crap. I could never imagine listening to sounds like that when I had my own great sounds of the 90s. But alas, here we are, twenty-ish years later, after I've discovered a Belgian...
i have tasted studying whole semester and i have also tasted studying one day before exam, i suggest being born with generational wealth
Age prediction will soon apply to ChatGPT consumer plans. The system is said to take a number of factors into consideration when trying to figure out an account holder’s age. Should someone find themselves erroneously classified as being under the age of eighteen, they will need to submit a selfie (photo of...
I'm always a sucker for German-language folk metal and Versengold do not disappoint. "Klabauterfrau" tells the jovial yet heartbreaking story of being in love with a Selkie. Or something. "KILLER QUEEN" by Skars reminds me of 1980s hair metal bluesy hard rock like Mötley Crüe or Junkyard. Derivative. The sped up...
It’s interesting to juxtapose this WSJ story about people building “analog rooms” in their houses with Jason Fried’s account of his parents’ “smart home”: It’s new construction. No one has lived in it yet. It’s amped up with state of the art systems. You know, the ones with touchscreens of various sizes, IoT...
Video 1 : The table is moved across a table then moved side to side with an identical set of tables. When sliding, and before each completed act, the time for each object is attributed by hand and voice before the hand retreats with another hand then shifts back and forth then back again then is shifted to a pack or...

Big data is cool. What is not cool is trying to manipulate it outside of a database. What if, like me, you don’t like databases? What if the data is in text files or CSVs and you want to work in those? I have recently started a new project collecting human first names. I began with about 250,000 rows of data and...
An absolutely fantastic post about software nudges and pop-ups by Mike Swanson: If you’ve ever read about “choice architecture” and nudging, this will feel familiar. The modern language for it was popularized in the late 2000s, and the core idea is simple: how choices are presented changes what people do, even if...

In an post from a few years ago recently republished on his blog, Lionel Dricot compares the “American dream” with the European one, the economic benefit that characterizes American technological production and the community and social benefit of the European one (read Linux, VLC, the Internet itself or the World...
This week I’m featured on Manuel Moreale’s excellent People & Blogs series, answering his questions about my silly little blog, nearly 28 years in. It’s very much worth browsing through his archive; I’ve found a lot of great new blogs that way. (My traffic today is up 2500% from yesterday… hah!) We’ve got a big ol'...
In my last post, I wrote: Well, I recently received an old MacBook Air from 2010 with Snow Leopard on it. Yes, the version before Lion, when it still had a dedicated “Hide all the bars and shit” button on the top right. I was tasked with provisioning the latest possible software on it and make it into a Thin Client...
People are freaking out over Ring cameras being used by ICE. But privacy advocates have been warning that this exact scenario was possible – even inevitable – ever since Ring cameras were first released. And now there are rumors of Apple working on an AirTag-sized AI pin you can wear that has multiple cameras and a...
I do not like to use the word blogging. It has never felt like what I was up to. Growing up, when I read other people’s blogs and got that sense of connection, I really felt like these people embodied something that I simply lacked, and it’s for that reason I was drawn to that post or person. But as I get older, and...
Great read:What has Docker become?Docker Inc’s journey from containerization pioneer to AI-focused platform has been anything but straightforward. Here’s what their strategic shifts tell us about the company’s search for identity.Tuan-Anh TranI remember when Docker hit, almost seemingly overnight over a decade ago....
This one’s a practical coding article, one that I haven’t done in quite a while. It’s something I’ve come across often over the years so I’ve always wanted to have an article to point people to, so here it is. Here’s the premise: you’re making a game (or really any program) that reads data, whether that’s game data,...
I was using one of my more niche apps this morning for a work project and got to thinking about the little productivity things I have on my Mac that most people don’t. I’m not talking about Fantastical or BBEdit, which are well-known tools; I’m talking about the “I solved a problem” apps, like Tyke, which scratched...

I bought a new phone case and immediately got hit with a very specific memory: fluorescent lights, a row of iMacs, and the panic of realizing my Oregon Trail party was absolutely not going to survive winter. The case is the Spigen Classic C1 MagFit for iPhone 17 Pro Max, and I grabbed it in Bondi Blue because I have...
I love e-readers. I was an early adopter of the good old dorky-looking Kindle 3 (aka Kindle Keyboard), some 15 years ago, and I read many a book on it or its successors. A few years later, I upgraded to Kindle Paperwhite 3 (a 2015 model), and got stuck with it for a while. I had a phase where I shunned ebooks and...

Links to things you might find interesting… What is a music genre? — P.D. I have an Android TV whose remote controller stopped working suddenly out of nowhere. I replaced its AAA batteries to no avail. What is the alternative? I bought a cheap IR replacement at Amazon but it did not work either. Apparently it only works on select TV models, and on Android TV boxes. Why does it work on...
Rating: 🟧 Type: Non-Fiction The book promises a lot, the concept is an investigation to how biology has shaped human society and history. For a while it manages to hold up to that promise, the first few chapters are genuinely really interesting. By the midpoint of the book it starts to drag unfortunately, while the...
Wellp, I didn’t get a whole lot done on the TODO list but at least I Tried™. (I did call about the sleep study but they never returned my call and it slipped my mind to try calling again. Oh well, next week.) I did finally take the Corolla to the mechanic and got it inspected and some overdue maintenance. They said...
Radical CandorHow to Get What You Want by Saying What You MeanAuthor: Kim Scott The general idea of the book is that great leadership means caring personally while challenging directly. When I started reading the book, I figured out it’s not that radical at all. It’s about feedback, mostly constructive: “Radical...
I have a sore throat and a cold. I think I got it from Uma, and she got it from school. I have also been talking a lot in meetings this week, and that’s not helping. Also, it’s very cold. There are lots of dogs at APU and they are all friendly. Spent some time debugging cold-start issues with Yamaha(Red). It wasn’t...
I don’t have anything to say about the Apple Creator Studio announcement that wasn't already said better, but I gotta say, there’s something I find deeply compelling about pre-release marketing material, especially idiosyncrasies and oddities in it. Look at these two screenshots from different parts of Apple’s...
I’ve written a little script for the powRSS Mastodon account to find posts from the Random section on the main site. The idea is to bring visibility to older blogs which may not have published recently. This in turn means you can now follow powRSS in your RSS reader for the occasional low-frequency dip into indieweb...
Got this one from the library after waiting for it to open again, I can't remember why I wanted it. But it is again one of those gut calls books which were correct! So far I'm loving the Narration and I'm so happy I got the original Spanish version. There's just too many sarcastic emotions which would be hard to...
There I was, sat on my couch the other day, when I came across a post on one of those link aggregation sites (linkhut). It was about knots this time. In particular, “Granny Knots”. I scrolled through the pictures and videos on the site and moved on to something else. My brain, though, wasn’t done with that site....
Oh nice, a blogging challenge, sort of. I saw this post on David's blog titled "What is the oldest thing you own", which is a reply to someone else's post, and I thought I'd write a reply to that, too. Looking around, I realise I don't have many really old things in my possession. I have a lot of old things because...
My latest post mentioned how perfect my current setup seems to be. Today, a week or two later, I must admit, this post holds up pretty well. I was expecting the post (and therefore the setup) to be updated drastically the minute I published it, as it usually goes, and yet, nothing of substance has changed since. In...
Twas a quiet day at home, the Missus and me. Rain fell off and on, and temperatures wavered. Not a foot was set outside the door, at any time. Reading much for life, in more ways than one. AI wrote a book for me, and I shall write one for ... Ah, no. 3 is wrong; we breakfasted out with friends. Life is good. No, God...

Manet Day again – the great Edouard's 194th birthday – and I realise that I've never posted on the subject of one of his best-known and most mysterious paintings, Le Déjeuner sur l'Herbe. There might be a reason for this, as I'm not sure there's much that can usefully be said about it. It's certainly not helpful to...

Read Erica's story, Torrents, on Foofaraw now!Do you believe in UFOs?I’m so disappointed I haven’t seen one. Yet.On a scale from 1 to 10—10 being “freaking out uncontrollably”—how do you think you’d handle a situation like this?I’d say around a 7. I’d be intrigued, but my heart rate would go up to 150 beats per...
