Today I was thinking about my last blog post The subtle art of… and I came up with a somewhat similar format. Some failures that turn out to be just beginnings: When I lost my hiking boots on a bench, then I discovered that I prefer trail running shoes and running down mountains When I broke my laptop with all my...
I mailed the 264th edition of The Newsletter Leaf Journal earlier today. I included 21 links from around the web (the usual). I had one saved link (see how I save links) noting the unfortunate consequences of putting a request for a Court to take one action or another in a footnote. I decided to take that as a...
After reading too much of older books, I wanted to catch up on something recent. But then, why not indie? I've been following John Wilker on Mastodon for quite some time, so why not this? The Adventures of Wil Calder is the first volume of Space Rogues series, spanning 10 novels. Wil is a human astronaut who,...
Cybersecurity Weekly Roundup — the week’s biggest security news, distilled into signal and next steps. (Image generated with ChatGPT) 🧭 Overview The last seven days were loud in all the usual places: Cisco patched an actively exploited Unified CM zero-day and CISA tracked more exploited bugs, Fortinet admins dealt...
Sometimes, I think about the fact that society at large could just stop caring about data protection and privacy, and there goes everything that I worked towards and am passionate about. Humbling. These laws are young. Not that people didn’t want privacy before, it’s just that as more data was collected, recorded...
In gardening, you can compost almost anything organic. Kitchen scraps, yard waste, paper—given time and the right conditions, they break down into rich soil. But agricultural guidelines are clear about exceptions: don’t compost carnivore feces. Dog and cat waste contains parasites and pathogens that composting heat...
It's okay not to watch every video that captures every bit of brutality that is being brought to bear upon the people of America (or the world, for that matter). It's okay not to read every news article. It's okay not to listen to every news story. If you don't take a break sometimes from all of the madness that you...
Alright. I’ve been asked what my infrastructure runs on because it’s really fast, performant and oddly cheap This guide implies that you’ll be already exposed to old machines. If not, then may god help you. Getting the case Start by browsing Ebay, Facebook Marketplace (or similar) or your local computer recycling...
This has been a busy week!Earlier in the week, I attended my first EdinburghJS Meetup, at which I met many wonderful people. As always, I am a bit nervous before going to events. What if I can’t find the location? What will I say? Those fears usually leave my system after arriving and getting settled into an event,...
It’s a secret to everyone! This post is for RSS subscribers only. Read more about RSS Club. It’s expected to freeze this evening in Austin and we may even see snow, which is exciting and novel for us Texans. But as we’ve learned in 2021 and 2023, cold snaps can lead to disaster. In those years the ice dealt untold...
I've always enjoyed a word puzzle. For many years I have been playing Words With Friends with a few of my chums. We're not seriously competitive, but we enjoy the game; it's a nice distraction from life. Similarly, when Wordle came along I was instantly hooked. Josh Wardle created a prototype several years earlier,...
Marbling the waters of every ocean with their billows of black and white, orcas are Earth’s most creative and most successful apex predator. Although they are known as killer whales, they are the largest member of the dolphin family. Older than great white sharks, they hunt everything from seals a tenth their size...
This is the work on Renaissance dress, with many hundreds of woodcuts of people from all over the world, and almost one hundred of Venetians.
I am still figuring out what this blog is, and I hope I’m not going to make this part too awkward, but I’d love once in a while to point to someone whose work I admire or find inspiring. I just spent an hour or so simply scrolling through David Aerne’s Bluesky feed, and I felt it was just so much fun for me. David...
Sovol SV06 (more) upgrades December 2025 Note: This is the third post about my 3D printing journey. If you are interested, take a look at Initial setup and Essential upgrades. I decided to make a separate post and not update the previous one because this will be a more advanced level of modding. The first post is...

Like many of my fellow Americans, I am currently buried under a lot of snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. I have been home since Wednesday afternoon, amusing myself during snow days. At some point, I thought it would be fun to write a little guide for people just discovering cyberpunk. Just a few lines. How hard...
Had a nice day out in Tsuen Wan to eat dim sum (HK style steamed dishes in bamboo baskets) at the base of Tai Mo Shan (highest mountain in Hong Kong) a few days ago. The restaurant is called Duen Kee Chinese Restaurant (aka Tuen Kee) 端記茶樓. It is touted for it’s location, self-serve tradition, and serving up locally...
I logged into IRC this morning to see this message: “Don’t take this the wrong way but does anyone else find Joshua Blais’ blog posts and twitter feeds a rabbit hole?” I had a laugh and then thought about a response (my friend that wrote this: come setup a bouncer and idle in the channel!) Here is my reply: When I...
January 24, 2026 It's really fucking cold this morning. The temperature is currently 11 degrees, with a wind chill of -3. A major storm is expected tomorrow, bringing snow, sleet, and ice. We spent yesterday preparing for it. I checked the heating oil, and we have plenty. I'll bring in a good supply of firewood this...
So, WordPress wants to know what I enjoy doing most in my leisure time. This is a great question, because it sounds like I’m about to say something impressive. Like, “I enjoy restoring antique furniture” or “I train for marathons.” No. What I enjoy most in my leisure time is doing absolutely nothing, but in a very...
NYT“Appear to Contradict” really?! The videos flat out prove the government is lying. You can clearly see him holding a phone before he’s taken to the ground by a group of gestapo. Then one of the thugs pulls the gun away from Alex Jeffrey Pretti’s holster and runs away with it while he continues to be beaten on by...
There I was, sat on my couch the other day, when I came across a post on one of those link aggregation sites (linkhut). It was about knots this time. In particular, "Granny Knots". I scrolled through the pictures and videos on the site and moved on to something else.My brain, though, wasn't done with that site....
Ten facts about me After all my philosophizing about ego, my ups and downs of the last few months, my thinking about the meaning of life, and most importantly, the dismal events taking place all over the world right now, I figured I could really use a small break from all that serious stuff. As luck would have it, I...
Previously. Problem statement: you’re already using atuin, and have sync configured. You just got a new machine. Now, configure atuin in it. If you self-host, configure your sync server first: shell $EDITOR ~/.config/atuin/config.toml # --- ## address of the sync server # sync_address = "https://api.atuin.sh"...
I did it just to see if it could even handle such a thing. First up, you have to switch it over to desktop mode and install OBS. Then you set up OBS as you would on desktop, then hit stream and open your game and start playing. Simple enough. But I wanted to use my mouse and keyboard to play Skyrim. So I had to dig...
Yesterday Patrick Kurp posted a poem, 'Larkin's Typewriter' – a 5-4-5 sonnet evoking Larkin's sad loss of his poetic afflatus – by a poet I had never heard of before, Robin Saikia. Taking a look online, I discovered that Saikia has written at least one other Larkin-themed poem, 'Philip Larkin's Death in Venice', in...
“Heartbreaking: The Worst Person You Know Just Made a Great Point” – ClickHole “When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, sir?” – John Maynard Keynes, paraphrased 2025 was a weird year for me. If you had asked me exactly a year ago, I would have said I thought LLMs were amusing toys but inappropriate...
Ok, here we gooo: Quiero adoptar el estilo de vida straight edge.
I have a thing for notebooks. I have way too many blank notebooks. I’m steadily filling them up, but I have enough to last me for… a while. But there’s always more to look at when it comes to stationary and notebooks. I’ve gotten into the fountain pen hobby, so now I’m on the lookout for some pocket sized notebooks...
Check it out on Letterboxd Extremely happy that a film with an original story is the biggest blockbuster of the year, but man did it feel rushed and poorly executed, especially in the second half. I don’t watch trailers before watching a film, so I had no expectations as to what’s going to come. The film,...
silly life goal: read so many books that they can make a stack as tall as I am
Better Homes and Gardens Casserole Cook Book was supposed to be included in my previous post. But then, it turned out that it was owned by LorelMa since the late 1960s! (I guess that this hardcover book gets its own post instead...) On the front cover, this 160-page cookbook features a meatball and vegetable bake...
January 2026. Lytham St. Annes. A confession. The things that stress me aren’t the things that should stress an approaching middle-age boomer. I detest cars. Last Autumn (America – “Fall”) our Citroen’s gears started playing up, the main dealer quoted us £5k just to take the box out, and even with my lucrative...
I fondly remember going to their website just to see if they had potato soup that day. ⊕Currently Listening: Robbie Robertson “Somewhere Down The Crazy River”Reply via email
A still from the pilot episode of Firefly where pilot Wash is goofing off with his dinosaurs. Alan Tudyk is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors. I love his comedic style and facial expressions.
