I read manga quite a lot this year, it remains one of my favorite forms of entertainment, so much so I’m even considering to get a tablet just to read it and enjoy it on a bigger screen (No, I will never turn into one of those maniacs who read manga on a laptop screen). I’m rather impressed with the amount of...
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop Tues 01/13/2026 - Joltik One of the first things I saw today online was this post from Sol that made me openly guffaw so I let him pick today's pokemon - and I got to learn something! I'd never seen this guy before, it's super cute. Plus I don't...
I pride myself on not having analytics here. If you're reading this, then I have no idea. The only way I know if people are reading my blog is either if my cloudflare quota fills up, if people contact me, or view the Contact page (the form provider in my contact page does have analytics that can't be turned off). I...
Back in mid-November I decided to try using a Linux laptop as my daily driver for at least the rest of the year. Things were going pretty well until the laptop stopped booting into Pop!_OS. It actually stopped recognizing the SSD altogether. So I thought maybe the SSD went bad and I bought a replacement. It wouldn't...
Edward FitzGerald (who's appeared on this blog before) was a staunch friend and supporter of Tennyson, but he was not initially much impressed by In Memoriam. Writing to Tennyson's brother Frederick, he declared that 'it seems to be with him now, at least to me, the Impetus, the Lyrical oestrus is gone...' Richard...
Hoo boy, I go down a rabbit hole on this one! Going through the history of Kroger logos and dipping back into memories of making a CD-ROM for the grocery chain. ⊕Currently Listening: Purity Ring “many lives”Reply via email
I see a lot of AI skepticism in the dev community — and some of it is fair (okay, maybe “a lot”). Vague bug reports, monster commits, untested code … We’ve proably read it all, and maybe even seen it all. Even Mitchell Hashimoto whose post appeared yesterday in my timeline writes “Slop drives me […]
I got nostalgic over Christmas and thought about movies. I really over-booked myself this Christmas: I took on loads of shifts on top of rehearsing the January play, and still tried to see friends as often as possible. Don't get me wrong, a lot of it was worth it, but I didn't get much of a chance to really slow...
I. The Central Question Traditional aesthetics asks: “What is beautiful?” Deferential Realism asks: “What does constraint-alignment look like, sound like, feel like?” This isn’t relativism (“beauty is whatever you want”). It’s claiming that alignment with constraint-structure has distinctive aesthetic properties...

Musings and ramblings on programming and things
I’ve owned mechanical keyboards since the early 90s. It was a rebranded variant of the Model M. I’m no stranger to mechanical keyboards so I know why they resonate with so many people. The TVSE Gold here in India later became the affordable, no-nonsense mechanical keyboard for a long time. There was even a USB...
So listen: it’s hard to be creative in all of this waves hands at everything going on in the world right now. You know it, I know it, they know it. So in order to help try to keep a little flow going on my end, I’m making a little accountability page here on the ol’ blog to keep a bit of track of headway on the book...
I came across PICO-8 sometime in 2018. The programmer and short-time gamer in me couldn’t control myself and had to buy it. I have not made any games with it, but I have enjoyed dabbling with it once in a while. The game, thankfully, is still owned by the same folks and continues to get updates. I do keep updating...
There are times in life when the continent of certainty parts underfoot and, as the ash cloud of the old world rains darkness upon us, we are asked to swim in the rivers of lava that will make the new. “Almost it would appear that it is useless in such confusion to ask,” wrote Virginia Woolf of such times, “those...
January 2025. Manchester. Wednesday brings a train from Rye to Ashford, and then to St Pancras (no pub stop), on to Sheffield (where the boiler has frozen), and off to Manchester for City v Brighton, whose fans have had a similar journey. I’m also here for an overdue cut from Matt in Chinatown’s Helvete, during...
One of my favourite recently-noticed little patterns is this one thoughtful accelerant in iOS Photos. If you want to add a photo to an album, you normally have to choose from a list of albums: However, once you do that one time, a new menu option appears. It’s effectively “Add again quickly to the album you just...
What can I say? Technical stuff 2 physical ins, physical outs. It also has a loopback pair so it’s 4 inputs and 4 outputs in total, so you can pair up your mic and desktop audio to the loopback inputs and use them in programs like OBS – all done on-device, though it requires a driver to set up if you want to...
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here in daily posts. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. End-to-end encryption in iOS RCS? (in French), @TiinoX83/xcancel. Evidence has been found in iOS 26.3 beta 2. It's the missing piece that will make RCS a viable alternative to...
The interim president of Texas A&M, Tommy Williams, has publicly replied to last week’s reports of his university telling a philosophy professor to remove readings by Plato and others from the syllabus of his moral problems course. In a message to faculty posted on the Texas A&M website, President Williams writes: I...
🆕 On the Shelves🟠 Metroid Prime 4: BeyondNintendoSamus Aran returns in a first-person sci-fi adventure focused on exploration, atmosphere, and environmental storytelling. To be honest, I have not played any of the Metroid Prime games, so coming to this one, I had no frame of reference to compare it to. I have not...
Whilst re-instating rsync in my blog publishing script (static IP! Hurray!), I came across the well named zparseopts that, surprise, simplifies script options parsing in Zsh. Immensely. Check it: zparseopts -D -E -F -- \ {M,-message}::=message \ {S,-sync}=sync MESSAGE=${${${message#-M}#--message}:-"default"}...
The new battery for my solar panels gives me electricity around the clock. I am happy with it. I am also pleased with the planning and hard work I did to (i) have an admittedly imperfect place to stay, (ii) be able to generate income in the meantime, (iii) save money for the battery, (iv) arrange for the purchase of...
(Get to all the parts in this series via the series post.) What we have from part 2 is a simple project myproj/ which relies upon a simple reuse package @qmacro/common. That reuse package currently exists only within a workspace within the myproj/ project. In order to be able to use it elsewhere and share the reuse...
Early morning moon over Berkhamsted. After three weeks off, waking up just after 6am for five days in a row was a shock to the system. On Saturday I woke up when my wife brought up a cup of tea and then promptly fell back to sleep, not waking until well after 9am. I think I needed the catch-up. I feel lucky that I...
Now we're in the new year! In winter, it's usually quiet where I am, because tennis is not really possible to do when it's too cold outside (I would like to go to indoor courts in winter, but they're too expensive right now). But I have some ideas for what I'd like to do as it warms up again, and I can start playing...
The afternoon sun provides a golden light on these Nandina and other brush growing along the Shirakawa river, near Heian Jingu shrine.
Web design books; by Phillip Chee on Flickr, February 2010. Welcome to season 5 of Cybercultural, which will be a history of web design from 1993 till 2012. That's twenty years of web design, going from the grey HTML webpages of 1993 through to the colourful, mobile-centric (yet responsive) designs of 2012. This...
I don’t want to paint or write long-form fiction in the age of AI. This isn’t me going on strike or anything. It’s just a report from my soul-crushed inner landscape of not feeling like making art and not having felt like making art for the past few years. Doing everything by hand feels pointless and tedious like...
When I was a junior engineer, my manager would occasionally confide his frustrations to me in our weekly 1:1s. He would point out a project another team was working on and say, “I don’t believe that project will go anywhere, they’re solving the wrong problem.” I used to wonder, “But you are very senior, why don’t...
I could’ve been titling these with that this whole time! Dang! An entire metric dang! Okay, so my boss and I had our weekly check-in meeting; without ego, I’m good at my job, so there isn’t really a lot to go over job-wise, and eventually we get around to Current Horrifying Events1. Optimist-with-a-budget that I am,...

GitGen is the absolute final answer to my question: can I self-host my Git repositories on a shared host and make them “browsable”? Yes, yes I can. I approached this solution back-to-front. Why does it need to be dynamic, like Cgit, gitweb, Gitea or even my very own CGI-git? It does not. How about taking an offline...
📚 Book 2 of 2026 - Finished: Brimstone by Callie Hart (3.5/5⭐) I guess I liked the first book in this series, Quicksilver, enough to be slightly excited to read the second book. I had high hopes, but still ended up giving it a 3.5 star rating. 📖 Quick SynopsisBrimstone picks up with Saeris Fane stepping into a role...
Problem statement: auto-generate a commit message for git from the command-line. The solution should be vendor agnostic. Given a git-foo.sh in $PATH, it can be invoked as git foo, as if it were a built-in git command. This is helpful to enable seamless integration with git. I chose to call the subcommand aicommit. I...
I stumbled upon Vinson Guo somewhat by accident. I don’t remember exactly, but I think his app was suggested to me by Gemini or Perplexity. I don’t remember. Anyway, Vinson is a developer based in Chengdu, China. In recent months, he’s been working on publishing SmartRSS. Vinson with his reader app has committed...
What is a Noise Complaint? A Noise Complaint is a free, live noise show meant to bring attention to issues the artists regard as salient. Multiple artists are encouraged to play. If there are 2-4 musicians, it is possible to have a full potluck situation where each musician can have a niche in the mix and play all...
