As someone in IT, someone who spends a lot of time thinking about systems and optimizations and data, it's easy to fall into this trap of constantly looking at your running data and trying to optimize every single angle. I get paid to pour over data and find ways to make things better, more streamlined, more...
Sad to hear that Bob Weir, co-founder, with Jerry Garcia, of the Grateful Dead, has gone to join the great celestial jam session. There is now only one member of the original line-up alive – drummer Bill Kreutzmann, who will be 80 this year. Among other things, Weir co-wrote with lyricist Robert Hunter the jaunty...
If a podcast has an RSS feed, we can download it, parse it, and then download all the content into a single folder, which can then be played by any audio player.
Just don't be creepy about it. ⊕Currently Listening: MJ Lenderman “You Don't Know The Shape I'm In”Reply via email
Anil Dash: The trillion-dollar AI industry’s system for controlling their most advanced platforms is a plain text format one guy made up for his blog and then bounced off of a 17-year-old kid before sharing it with the world for free. You’re welcome, Time Magazine’s people of the year, The Architects of AI. Their...
Catching up on editing; here is the Wolf Moon from last week I didn't think I'd get any actual shots because it was partially cloudy but also the point of highest visibility it was obscured by trees; less than ten minutes later though: Sometimes it works out like that, y'know? moon photography
When home computers were new, there was this enduring myth of “killer poke.” POKE was a pretty low-level BASIC command that allowed you to write any number to any place in the memory, as there was no memory protection. From that developed a set of myths of the right magical pairs of numbers that could be input and...
My daughter finds emoji hilarious. She’s 6 and will scroll through an emoji picker for ages. My wife and I started by letting her use WhatsApp’s emoji picker to send us messages, but that quickly polluted our chat history with emoji spam. We tried a few dedicated emoji-only apps like Emojichat, but there was this...
I always loved the woman at the well, when Jesus, as I understood it as a kid, comes up to this woman who's scorned by all the people and goes, I see you, I love you, I forgive you. I thought that was such a novelistic move. That seems to me part of the magic of fiction, because in fiction I can make a person that I...
How shall I thank thee, let me count the ways: Should I thank you for pirating the entire historical output of creative humanity and then asserting ownership of your loot? For destroying education? For raising utility rates and killing the environment? … Rich Hickey lists all the ways.
First FortnightI’ve been playing catchup with my first weeknote of 2026. I’m starting to write, but it’s already Thursday of Week 2. So instead, let’s start 2026 off with a fortnightly note! Expect a longer-than-usual ramble… First and foremost, Happy (Belated) New Year! My one wish for everyone is one that many may...
Claude builds a UI I did a sketch on my iPad, showing a dashboard in both desktop and mobile layouts. I gave it to Claude, with a short description (for example "the hero section has a fixed height, so the news articles there have a vertical scroll bar in desktop layout; but the service sections have variable height...
What do you do an Saturday when you don’t feel well to go out for some activities? Right! Let’s read about Software Engineering and AI! Yesterday I read the complete series of the 22 blog posts listet on The AI-Ready Software Developer – Index – Codemanship’s Blog. AI code generation used by teams with bottlenecks, […]
This blogpost may not last very long depending on how technology goes With the disturbing applications of Grok's image generation, I am becoming less and less comfortable with my pictures being online. Don't get me wrong - I understand as a nondescript white dude this threat is relatively minor for me compared to...
This is an archived version of my Now page. I’ve done a lot of things in the last few months. Above all, I’ve had a lot of fun setting up a server to host a series of applications and free myself from cloud services: FreshRSS, Umami, VaultWarden, LanguageTool and I’ll gradually install more. Then, my daughter...
January 2026. Hastings. A third pub on All Saints Street in an hour, and a second Heritage entry in quick succession at the Stag. We left the Cinque Ports just as dusk was about to weave its magic. I reckon a real architectural enthusiast could spend a good hour in this quarter mile stretch. Virtually every building...
Every now and then, when my sweetheart and I go on a day trip in the region, I sling my camera over my shoulder in the hope of capturing a beautiful scene or two. Last year was no exception. Often, however, I don’t get around to reviewing and editing the photos, but I have now caught up on three events from 2025....
A year of purposeful reading I succumb to the yearly waves of Youtube binge watching and I notice a pattern emerging amongst the BookTube community. Read less, read better. Don't track, don't count, don't share. Read slowly, make notes, take breaks. Life is too short for bad books. Life is too short to read a book...
As I was playing around with contrast-color(), I got a wild idea that you could use contrast-color() to invert its return value by nesting it: contrast-color(contrast-color(var(--some-color)). When would this be useful? Uh… Good question. I couldn’t come up with an example right away but after a bit I found one...
After the nuclear sands stopped glowingWe finally removed the poison from the groundHuddled in our lab burning candles from both endsPlanting samples and tenderly caring for each kernelWaiting with baited breath for everyMonocot sheath that cracked the soilA promise of new growth a garden for all to shareBut...
No matter how I look at the list of apps I currently use, whether first-party or third-party, I can’t find anything to change, not a program to replace, not a service to swap for another. I think I am happy with my setup. It feels strange to admit, but somehow, I can’t quite believe it; I must be missing something,...
A few snowflakes are enough to transform not only the city, but also its inhabitants. People have to look up from their damn screens, walk a bit slower, and awkwardly smile at each other while they navigate the slippery pavement. Drivers remain as much a menace as ever, but at least their ugly hunks of rolling metal...
The other day I went to an AI hackathon organized by my friends Lucia and Malin. The theme was mech interp, but I hardly know PyTorch so I planned to do something at the API layer rather than the model layer. Something I think about a lot is cognitive architectures (like Soar and ACT-R). This is like a continuation...
Looking across the Oi River at Daihikaku Senkoji temple, as the afternoon shadows lengthen.
If you work in text, make everything you possibly can a git repository. This means that if you work in front of a computer, this post is for you. Stop being that person with 50 variations of the same file scattered across your desktop. Why would we want to do this?# At the surface level, so you can have a “backup”...
Conrad Poirier, Junior League mobile library at the Montreal General Hospital. Public domain image via Wikimedia Commons. I first came across Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” when I was twelve or thirteen; it was one of the stories assigned in my seventh grade reading class. I can’t imagine what sorts of meaningful...
It's Sunday, and I was able to get some downtime at work to do some upgrades behind the scenes. I've been working on this data pipeline for months, and today I finally got to enable the first bit of it in production. We still have quite a bit of work left to do, but this is a step in the right direction!A few...
Do you remember the Acid Tests? Not Ken Kesey’s Acid Tests; even I’m not old enough to remember those; I only read about them in Tom Wolfe’s book. No, I’m talking about the tests that checked browsers on how well they complied with web standards. Back in the mid-aughts, Apple talked a lot about how well Safari and...
Mood: Intellectually combative but wishing I could have a masculine man hold my face. I was listening to a literary podcast the other day—a mistake, usually, as they tend to discuss books that don't have an audiobook version written by people who wouldn't look at me on the street—and the host let out a long,...
Oh, the post-vacation blues hits me hard this time. Of course it doesn’t help that going from 35°C to (up to) -10°C is quite a jump. I had to travel for work right away after coming home and while during that time only my nose communicated its displeasure, once I got home, it turned into having a proper cold.So...
AND MY WORDS CANNOT DO IT JUSTICE; LOOK AT THIS ADORABLE SHIT: Thinking tiny wooden thoughts, with a touch of tiny class He’s got a little box full of tiny magnetic face-ingredients! WHAT A GOOFBALL, AS IN SEEN IN THIS CANDID SNAPSHOT I love him, he will be my heir and successor, he speaks with my voice and acts...
I've recently decided to stop drinking anything caffeinated for a month. My top offender has been matcha, which has a surprisingly high caffeine content depending on the kind and the amount you consume. Second is other green tea, and black tea. Third is the occasional coffee I get elsewhere, or flavored cubes to...

I previously published an article about seeing a working Christmas countdown clock in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, on September 29, 2025. That was not the only early sign of Christmas I saw in the early autumn. On October 10, 2025, I ordered an Usaburo snowman kokeshi doll on Ebay. I had looked at it a few days prior...
I've had Desktop Heroes running on a side monitor for the past week or so. It's a fun little Cookie Clicker–style game that I enjoy watching from time to time. It needs minimal interaction, and you level up characters and progress as you normally would in a small RPG. The "screen" for the game is the bottom 2/5ths...
“My foothold is tenon’d and mortis’d in granite… and I know the amplitude of time,” wrote Walt Whitman, knowing what stone teaches about trusting time. It tempers your sorrows to know that the striking red pebble you pick up at the beach is hematite — the oxidation of iron in sedimentary rock, the same iron...

5th January - 11th January The first week back at work is over! A few drinks later and the hectic pace is a dull memory; until Monday morning rolls around. I made a big list before I finished for Christmas of the critical things I needed to do on my return and, as of close of play Friday, I have done none of them....
Kenshi Yonezu x Yuzuru Hanyu "BOW AND ARROW" Conversation. Two people that I admire talking for almost an hour, it was a delight watching this conversation. I love when artists talk about why they do the things they do. I Found an Old Knitting Machine in my Basement. I'm into knitting recently, I got curious of...
so i've had some people send me album recommendations. i was going to write a detailed review for each album but this post idea ended up rotting in my drafts. now i decided to post my thoughts about them unpolished without worrying too much about it. m b v by my bloody valentine much more dreamy sounding than I...
