I've had hundreds of my accounts be broken into because I used to use the same password everywhere. So I'd like to start off this blog by saying, if you for any reason re-use the same password on any website anywhere else, please go and change it. While you're at it, you should probably get a password manager like...
Here's the side of Edie often regulated to behind the scenes, tired and annoyed — just like her dad. Currently Listening: Hermanos Gutiérrez “Blood Milk Moon”Reply via email
Computers Are Bad is an acquired taste and I’m acquiring it. This was an excellent post going deep into the myths and anti-myths of elevator close door buttons, and pedestrian crossing buttons. I love storytelling + rigor: First, anyone who says that the “door close” buttons in elevators are routinely “not even...

Dear Ciara, Work for the year is almost done. I won’t lie, it’s been a tense last few weeks—both professionally and personally—but there are friarbirds chirruping on the telephone wires this morning and I trust that everything will work out. The Organist and I are preparing for the arrival of my sister on Saturday....
My kids love playing VR. The only downside is it takes a while to charge and the battery only lasts so long. We got them an Oculus Quest 2 a long while ago but they stopped using it at some point last year. It's been sitting in my sons closet since then. Last night one of them asked about buying the Quest 3 when we...
A couple of days ago, I stumbled over a Mastodon post by @johl, in which [he shared vimwiki](https://github.com/vimwiki/vimwiki) as his approach for taking notes in vim. Which immediately piqued my interest, as I have so far been just taking my notes in plain vim without a way of linking them. While I’m not someone...
What If Our Ancestors Didn’t Feel Anything Like We Do? – The Atlantic: But as a historian trying to comprehend feelings, [Rob] Boddice can’t stand those cute Inside Out characters. Because not only do we imagine other people to have the exact same set of emotions that we have, but we project this thought backwards...
I keep my ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 modem in my TV cabinet next to my MikroTik hAP ac3 router, which sits between my work desk (two monitors, speakers, mouse, and keyboard) and computer and wireless access point (NETGEAR WAX 202 running OpenWrt). I previously only had two electrical outlets behind my desk, attached to...

Only two more days of Advent of Code this year, starting with today, day 11. Finally a year where I don't have to program during Christmas, given that I solve tomorrow's puzzle in twelve days or less. We'll see what mister Wastl has in store for us then. But let's focus on the day at hand. Check out my full solution...
Sometimes the servers are running hot, the tickets are piling up, and you just want your site to chill out a little. So I did the obvious thing and added snow. Zach Leatherman’s snow-fall web component is a tiny script that lets you drop a subtle snow effect on your site with one HTML tag. It is zero-dependency and...
So there I was, pedaling my bicycle as fast as I could down a long, straight stretch of road, feeling great. I'd just discovered the pleasures of riding a road bike, and I loved every minute that I could get away. Always a data geek, I tracked my mileage, average speed, heart rate, etc. It was a beautiful Indian...
Cineville asked for my top 5 favorite movies with a German theatrical release in 2025, and it was nice to scroll through my notes and come up with a list. Honorable Mentions I Like Movies (Canada, directed and written by Chandler Levack) Des Teufels Bad / The Devil’s Bath (Austria/Germany, directed and written by...
December 2025. Old Harlow. A day in Southborough with the in-laws; a cancelled medical appointment causes irritation but a Meal for 3 from Meows compensates a little. Now this will come as a surprise to Mrs RM but I reckon the landlady of Meows Chinese takeaway in Southborough is probably my favourite person on...
Looking at Osawa Pond from the platform at Daikaku-ji Temple. A blue sky makes everything look better.
In the winter of 2021 I discovered a Gemini capsule called Konpeito Media. KONPEITO was quarterly Lo-fi hip hop & chill bootleg mixtapes, distributed exclusively through the Gemini protocol. Each tape was a half-hour mix, clean on side A and repeated on side B with an added ambient background noise layer for...
Whatever it is, let me start it with gratitude. Gratitude is fertile ground. Put in the seeds of your dreams and desires. Keep the ground watered and pull the weeds. Soon the seeds will grow. (Conversely, worry is fertile ground for all your fears. Stay worried and you will harvest an abundance of fears.) Gratitude...
The latest links… “There will be no Q&A sessions. There will be no dead air. We shall not hear the tick-tock of the clock. How will OpenAI learn from us? I feel a flash of small panic, like a trapped squirrel” — philosopher Daniel Story describes what it was like being at an OpenAI higher education summit “The whole...
A wonder, that a device so small, in existence for less than twenty years, can be so influential in one's daily life. An evolutionary appendage that serves a purpose, but one we can do without. Though, this is contrary to our belief. I forget my keys. My water bottle. The day's lunch sack. I even forget where I am...
VogueBut this strangeness is always a stylish statement, unlike, say, Supreme’s infamous brick. “A24 chooses objects and ideas that are too strange or too narrow for a normal marketing department, and turns them into talismans,” says Martin Mangez-Casey, previously global director of digital communications at Louis...
It's Emily Dickinson's birthday today (born 1830, in Amherst). She wrote that 'To live is so startling it leaves little time for anything else' – but it left her time to write, in her short life, large numbers of the most extraordinary poems of the nineteenth (or any) century. Let's celebrate the birthday with one...
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop Tuesday 12/09/2025 - Gengar Continuing off the last post, Gengar was a request and I'm doing my best! I'm not gonna check but I think this is the first Ghost-type pokemon I've done for the project. Weds 12/10/2025 - Cyndaquil Another request! This...
Overcast. An old loghouse with a balding thatched roof along a mountain path. Goats linger about, munching at the anemic grass that grows around the building. A wooden sign, which might have once hung high but is now resting oblique against the wall beside the loghouse's door, reads: "Pilgrims Welcome" in ancient...
As part of my responsibilities as a lay minister in my church, I help lead the youth age 12 to 17. We have weekly youth activities and yesterday we went Christmas caroling in a 55+ community in our neighborhood. We split into two groups and each group had a list of elderly people to visit – mostly widows and single...
How do we live whole in a breaking world? It helps to bless what is simply for being. It helps to thank everything for its unbidden everythingness. And still we need help — help holding on to the beauty amid the brutality, help stripping the armors of certainty to be complicated by contraction and more tenderly...
I love hand written notes; a poem, a grocery list, a random thought, a to-do, I love it all. There's something about taking these kinds of notes with a physical pen and paper that is just hard to beat. For one I simply remember things more clearly if I take the time to write them down on paper vs a computer, but I...
I can't argue with most of these picks! Hades II is my personal Game of the Year, but BALL x PIT was also spectacular. I tried Expedition 33 but it never really quite landed for me, and I got most of the way through Dragon Age: The Veilguard before getting bored. Of course, I played more Rimworld than anything...
There’s a fundamental mismatch between what AI can do and what most people want it to do. Most users treat AI as a confidence machine. They want answers delivered with certainty, tasks completed without friction, and validation that their existing thinking is sound. They optimize for feeling productive—for the...

Well, since I am currently not using any kind of streaming service providing some type of yearly recap like Spotify or YouTube, I have decided to just do my own little summary of that! This is inspired by a post by Axxuy, although I went ahead and added a bit more than he did, just because. All the music with a...
It’s Blogvent, day 11, where I blog daily in December! I learned about The Abilene Paradox a while back from Ben Hong. Long story short, this is when a group of people ends up doing something that nobody actually wants to do because they are not good at talking about it. I feel like this happens a lot both on group...

Those four words - ‘But it is mine’; Definitely makes it all worth it. I have a similar setup wherein I use a Hetzner VPS just to proxy in all traffic to my selfhosted stuff. Initially had wireguard running across my devices. Switched to tailscale for a bit more ease of management. Maybe every six months or so...
I’ll keep this as brief and point-form as possible. 14 people answered my survey, which is more than I expected but also not that many. I am very happy, though, and if you are reading this and answered the survey, thank you so very much for the time you took to click on some boxes and write a few words of...
This is it, we're wrapping the penultimate season of Voyager. Things are going to hit the fan. Borgs will Borg, and Jeneway will Jeneway. Yup - we're closing to the end of Star Trek: Borg Series. Turns out there's a hidden Borg network, where the drones can be free. Some of them possess a gene, which allows their...
"A Mad Russian's Christmas" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra Orchestral heavy metal just works. In general, but especially at this time of year. Shredding Tchaikovsky conjures up images of swirling snow, pine trees, and wolves pacing a steam train through the forest. Or something. Thanks for reading this post via RSS!...
The most popular link last time was this incredible video, with this xkcd comic second. I'm always here for an Emily Gould essay. Here, she's investigating the supposed "cliff" that women experience at the age of 44, when the physical effects of aging really start to kick in, apparently.A chef explains why she quit...
With a serious lack of holiday themed cosy maths in the advent calendar, I present some titbits about this snowflake looking thing called the von Koch fractal. It's fascinating enough to be useful for time travel. Okay, that's obviously a lie, but not entirely - the characters in the novel The Curve of the Snowflake...
Not that I’m under the age of sixteen of course. But say what you will about it, the social media ban for Australians under the age of sixteen is now in force. Already some of those effected are claiming to have circumvented the restrictions. That shouldn’t surprise anyone. If anyone’s gong to figure out how to do...
