For a while, I have had an idea for Artemis – the calm web reader I maintain – to have a page that shows your feed and feed settings on the same page.I am interested in this idea because there is presently a distance between the settings to customise your reader and the reader itself. You need to click...
And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul. - John Muir Yesterday, my daughter (who will graduate from college next week..yay!!!) and I drove in the direction of the Mogollon Rim to cut the family Christmas tree. We purchased a permit from Tonto National Forest and made the day trip to an area just...

Normally, it takes until about the middle of February for me to get sick of Winter. Usually, in mid-December we still see some 40 degree days. Almost never are we under 20 degrees. This year, we’ve seen -8 Degrees (these are all in Fahrenheit). More than once. It has been effin’ cold. And we have a ton of snow on...
"Gothic Christmas" by Within Temptation This has been on my Christmas playlist for so long. Straight up Scandinavian viking symphonic metal with operatic vocals and Norse mythology but it's all about Christmas. Firmly tongue in cheek and a genuinely decent song. Thanks for reading this post via RSS! Let me know your...
December 2025. Folkestone. Leaving the Old Neptune, and the glorious sunset Mrs RM had just missed, we headed over seashells and pebbles towards Whitstable’s oyster beds. I’ll eat (and drink) anything, but I doubt oysters could match those we had in Lisbon last year. You wondered where Bob the Builder got his dress...
So I already made a post about this on TikTok/Bluesky/Tumblr/YouTube (because I am, if anything, distributed these days), but I wanted to talk about it here -- as it feels more permanent. This last weekend I was at a convention, and like most cons where I table a few people came by to pitch me their own creative...

The mice weren't so lucky. A connected brain seemed like a requirement. Wemly and Utsab went through mice like batteries in a particularly demanding device. Wemly was able to repeat her initial maze experiments but could do nothing to initiate a model transfer. If the device needed to be operated by the wearer,...
[Equations in this post may not look right (or appear at all) in your RSS reader. Go to the original article to see them rendered properly.] Speaking of the equation of time, which I was in yesterday’s post, I wanted to extend some of the work I did in that post to draw my own EoT plot and to be able to adjust it to...
The mouse click recording feature in macOS video recording is really helpful for showing what you're doing (and something that I've used for videos for this blog previously, such in my writeup on how to set your screen time passcode without knowing it). But sometimes you also want to show keyboard presses, and...
Did you know I don't have any analytics on this page. I like to pretend I don't care about who is reading this, but in an attempt to preach what I pray (and to respect your privacy) I have made the decision to not have any analytics. *Cloudflare does provide network stats, though those are not precise and basically...
Like a deer in headlights, I saw it coming as my semester was winding down. I needed to keep pushing. There's money riding on my education. I think I'm burnt out. I used up every bit of energy just to get over the finish line. Bringing myself to care was tough, but ignoring whatever is inside of me that wants to...
It's not much but it's pretty Growing up in California, (specifically in the bay area and then spending adult years in the Coachella Valley) most of my life has been framed with the old expression "Snow is a place you go, not a thing that happens". Understanding that California is not a monolith and contains...
Moving from Firefox to Orion has been a success in all respects, except one: I've lost the ability to send tabs from one device to another. I've tried several approaches, but most of them were too kludgy to be practical. Last night, I realized that I actually already have a tool for that — the Element app. I created...
Sticky comicsIn fashion language, white suggests luxury, like, you don’t have to work, because if you worked, you’d wear a more practical color that won’t get stained within 5 minutes. Staying clean is a privilege — the aristocracy keeps their hands clean and the working class gets dirty for them.I’m going to go out...
Most days, GRC feels less like “governance, risk, and compliance” and more like alphabet soup with lawyers attached. HIPAA for one client, PCI DSS for another, NIST CSF for your program, FTC Safeguards for the finance folks, NIS2 for the EU footprint. Everyone wants “compliance” and nobody wants to triple the...
This quote comes from A.T. Willis, Jr., The Biblical Basis of Missions, chap. 2 (p. 13 in the document I have): The Old Testament sketches God’s efforts to form a holy people. Holy means to be separated unto God. God called Abraham to leave home and family and live a life of loneliness. His descendants became a...
My Setup and the Problem I use Linux on my main work laptop, where remote access is effortless: I can SSH with Kitty’s remote edit kitten or mount remotes via KDE Dolphin. But at home, my desktop runs Windows 11 for gaming (thanks to stupid anti-cheat restrictions). I normally just game on the desktop; but sometimes...

“I have always felt that a human being could only be saved by another human being,” James Baldwin wrote in one of his finest essays. “I am aware that we do not save each other very often. But I am also aware that we save each other some of the time.” It happens so rarely because we so often choose the wrong person...
Editor’s note: Job openings are a recurring topic in the Manual supporters’ WhatsApp group. In a recent conversation there were so many useful LinkedIn tips that we ended up with a kind of playbook for doing well on the platform. Thanks to everyone who contributed, especially Marcia who steered the discussion,...
Roshan: Created page with "The word "trespass" is interesting in what it has changed to. Like many other words in the law enforcement or legal space, "I will charge you with X-ing" or "I will eject you for Y" has become "I will X you" or "I will Y you". 'Trespass' is particularly interesting because it was already a...
Marley was dead, to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it. And Scrooge’s name was good upon ‘Change for anything he chose to put his hand to. Old Marley was as dead as a doornail....
From Scott Jenson’s 2021 post about Tesla 3 interface, this is so clever (emphasis mine): Edward Tufte has this visual rule that 1+1=3: With a single line on the screen, you have just that single object, but adding a second line does something interesting, it adds a third ‘object’ on the screen, the negative space...

Are you putting on a philosophy summer program, philosophy summer school, or philosophy camp in 2025? Listing your summer programs here at Daily Nous increases the chances that more people (including potential applicants) learn about them. So please share information about your program in the comments on one of the...
Number 9, turn me on dead man! And... grids again. While the first part of today's puzzle is easy to implement, the second part got me down the rabbit hole of the shapely library, GEOS computational geometry, DE-9IM matrices, ray-casting and all sorts of other wildly interesting theoretical mathematical knowledge....
It’s Blogvent, day 10, where I blog daily in December! I often get asked about food and things to do in Chicago! There’s sooo many stereotypical things to do and get, like the architectural boat tour and some deep dish pizza. And honestly, you could do well with that. But I have so many more food recs for you....
R.S. Thomas wrote the justly famous Advent poem 'The Coming' (which has appeared here before) – 'And God held in his handA small globe. Look, he said. The son looked. Far off,As through water, he sawA scorched land of fierceColour. The light burnedThere; crusted buildingsCast their shadows: a brightSerpent, a...
The clouds cascade above you in incredible detail. In places, their bases form an impenetrable ceiling, but that ceiling is temporary. Wisps of shadow float against glowing shards of the sun, illuminating another layer behind. The effect continues below the clouds. As you move forward, you can see the boundaries...

Probably not a popular thing to say today. The zeitgeisty thing to say is that we should all log off and live terrible cottagecore solarpunk lives raising chickens and being mindful. I wish people were more online and more public. I have rarely wished the opposite. Consider this post addressed to you, the reader....
For the ultimate IndieWeb Carnival of 2025, V.H. Belvadi asks us where we think the IndieWeb will be in 2030. I saw the term IndieWeb being used for a time before I decided to dig a little deeper. Pay a visit to the IndieWeb homepage, and you’ll know if it is something for you or not. I am still quite new to the...
You know the ones... They go on easy, fit just right and don't pinch around the ankles. They get washed the most and when one goes missing there's a real pang coupled with hope its mate will re-emerge.Reply via email
I have been running the Arch Linux-based EndeavourOS on my desktop workstation since the summer of 2022. I use Calibre to manage my ebook library. I had previously installed Calibre from the main Arch packages repository. While it always worked as expected, I would often (if not usually, or almost always) see a nag...
