My maternity leave is over, I'm back at GitHub, and I'm ready to go. Kinda.
I found myself on a boat in the middle of Lake Biwa today. A glassy lake reflects the beautiful clouds, the city of Otsu and Mt. Hiei. This is the other side of Kyoto's eastern mountains (Higashiyama). 今日、私は琵琶湖の真ん中でボートに乗っていた。鏡のような湖面に美しい雲、大津の街、比叡山が映る。ここは京都の東山の反対側だ。
Three days from today (2024-11-09) marks a year since my first running workout and it is just amazing to look back and see how things have changed.
Diese zweite Käfer sind ja direkte Gegenüber... aber ihren Leben sind nicht zu verschieden: dieselbe Erde, dieselbe Essen, dieselbe Aufgaben. Es gibt keinen materiellen Grund. Was passiert hier?
Happy Birthday Bex. With your infectious smile and thirst for life, you have shown me so much joy. You have helped me expect more out of myself and others. But also taught me how to have grace with myself when I fall short. I’m proud of how you’ve faced adversity this year. You’ve grown and stretched yourself so...

You don’t often get the chance to hear Nobel Laureates live. When the opportunity arose in the form of the Nobel Prize Dialogue, The Future We Want, I applied. I wasn’t expecting to receive an invitation. I had assumed that there would be a lot of young people and would prefer folks under...
I recently finished reading "This is for Everyone" by Sir Tim Berners-Lee (The inventor of the internet btw) and it left me with a lot to contemplate as to what the Web is to us. Like many of you I am a child of the computer and the web. My …
Not every hike delivers stunning photos, and that’s okay. A recent walk near Ebersberg took us through forests, along a lake, and past quiet villages—scenes that felt peaceful but proved tricky to capture. The light wasn’t ideal, the compositions didn’t quite work, and some shots fell short of expectations. Yet even...
I didn't even post about Halloween. The heresy. The cheek, the nerve, the gall, the audacity and the gumption! But the truth is, I did not have time to even think about it. I didn't even rewatch the holy trinity of Over The Garden Wall, Monster House and Hocus Pocus. I didn't even reread my favorite Halloween short...
On the NetNewsWire blog I’ve just announced NetNewsWire 6.2 for Mac and iOS. This release is almost entirely bug fixes — but it does add a couple small features and one potentially interesting one: it now supports Markdown in RSS (via the source:markdown element). Read all about it on the NetNewsWire blog. (And now...

I’ve tried all the major note-taking apps in the Apple ecosystem. For some years, starting more than a decade ago, I used Simplenote, then Drafts, then Bear. I used Ulysses for a while, though that’s really more of a text editor than a notes app. Obsidian, yep. Notion, yep. I tried Day One to take […]
The announcement read: From September 30, 2025, access to Imgur from the United Kingdom is no longer available. I missed that one and only picked up on it when visiting the Linux Mint forums to look up some issue or other. Imgur is popularly used to share screen grabs of issues so that others can have a look and...

The great Venetian genre painter Pietro Longhi, born on this day in 1701, painted mostly indoor scenes – including his famous Exhibition of a Rhinoceros in Venice – but he sometimes ventured outdoors, as in this typically cheery scene of duck hunters on the lagoon. Is the smartly dressed hunter firing arrows at the...
The terminal stage of de-Googling is to go back to using a 90s-style dumb phone. Devices like the Nokia 105 aren't as old-fashioned as you might think, but can they substitute for a smartphone in day-to-day use?
PoliticoAbigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill cruised to double-digit victories in Virginia and New Jersey. Two Georgia Democrats flipped seats on the state’s Public Service Commission, the first non-federal statewide wins for a Democrat in nearly two decades. Democrats flipped a pair of Republican-held state Senate...

October 2025. Leicester. 36 hours in Leicester, and a busy morning for Mrs RM if she’s going to tick her deers, the tourist highlights she’s got from ChatGPT blogs. Starting with Curveside Bistro’s Turkish breakfast, and the fonts of the Good Earth Cafe, the Art Deco stylings of the Turkey Cafe, and then into a…...
I was too ambitious with my initial weekly sharing (weekly 15). I’ve decided to make it a bit more achievable — without a specific number. The idea that some lives matter less is the root of all that is wrong with the world. - Dr. Paul Farmer I have decided that my Bear blog will be my online hub. As mentioned on my...
I spent the evening working on an app called Poster. The app cross posts between Bluesky and Mastodon/GoToSocial. It’s not special, but it was fun to write. It took awhile, since my Python is still very noobish, and very much a “how do I do this” -> “Google how to do this” workflow. But I did not write the README.md...

Over the last decade, I’ve spent countless hours going through the archives of Austin Kleon’s blog and Tumblr (the latter was especially an important anchor when I was down with typhoid for a month, back in 2018 and couldn’t do anything but think about how much I’d read and write when I’d be well again). The most popular link last time (all the way back in September!) was this abundance meme, with this confession from an AI hater second. This is a lovely piece of writing about childhood memories and standing stones:"People who were taken to ancient places as children often have fuzzy

A reflection on a cross-country training run turns into a broader lesson about risk, choice, and the rewards of bold decisions.

“Words are events, they do things, change things. They transform both speaker and hearer… feed understanding or emotion back and forth and amplify it,” Ursula K. Le Guin wrote. Words are the invisible hands with which we touch each other, feel the shape of the world, hold our own experience. We live in language — it...
One day, a Donkey and a Tiger got into an argument over the color of the grass. “The grass is blue,” said the Donkey. “That’s ridiculous,” replied the Tiger. “The grass is clearly green.” When the argument grew more and more intense, they decided to find the Lion, King of the Jungle, to settle the … Continue reading...
Emacs has holistically become my daily computing environment. My efforts have been focused on building emacs into the workflow of essentially everything I do, as long as it doesn’t involve heavy video or media, I try my very best to accomplish it in emacs. The idea is to achieve deep integration with everything I do...
