I've lived in Christchurch for the past 3 years (2022-2025), and that's about enough for me. I'm not sure what draws people to live here, maybe the beach?

“One of the most visible and impactful ways that philosophers demonstrate their practical value,” says Matthew Kisner, professor of philosophy at the University of South Carolina, is by having ethicists “embedded in a professional setting, working alongside clinicians and health care professionals.” He is now...
British actor Patricia Routledge died at the age of ninety-six last week. I came to know Routledge through her role as Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced bouquet, it would seem), in the BBC produced TV sitcom Keeping up Appearances, which ran from 1990 to 1995. I think the show screened in Australia a little after that...
i've been a coffee drinker for a while now. i wasn't always like this though. the first time i drank coffee was when i was very little. i don't remember it myself but my parents tell me i was curious about coffee and wanted to try it so they gave me a bit of turkish coffee. it was most likely without any sugar and i...
Sometimes I get into collecting something, when usually a single one is enough, this happens with many tools, so I shared some thoughts about why.
So if you haven't heard the news yet, No Brand Con is coming back. Not only are we running the convention again, but we're bringing it back to Eau Claire -- something folks have been begging us to do for the last decade. May 1st-3rd 2026 we're going to be down at the Lismore Hotel for the twenty-first No Brand Con....
Here's a really good post by Alikhil that probably resonates with a lot of us:One evening, I felt like I had finally cracked a tricky part of our infrastructure. I thought, “Just 20 more minutes and I’ll finish it.” Of course, those 20 minutes stretched into well over three hours. By the time I left the office, I...
Claude Code supports custom commands. The precise term is “custom slash commands”: Custom slash commands allow you to define frequently-used prompts as Markdown files that Claude Code can execute. Commands are organized by scope (project-specific or personal) and support namespacing through directory structures. I...
Beware those who tread here, for there be MAJOR Spoilers ahead. Stephen King has never written an ending I’ve really enjoyed. I’ve read many of his books, most of them from his younger days, and I’ve never really left any of his books satisfied. There is a fundamental disagreement Mr. King and I have. I truly...
El buscador DuckDuckGo un año más dona dinero a diversas organizaciones que luchan por un internet más privado, más seguro y respetuoso con las personas que lo utilizamos
My test running Ubuntu Touch on my Pixel 3a XL as my primary phone continues. I received an MMS for the first time today. Instead of displaying the MMS, the default Ubuntu Touch messaging app told me it could not be downloaded. I tried fiddling with the APN settings to no avail. Then I found […]
I wrote in my anarchist notebook: Jacques Ellul thinks that Christians should be anarchists because God, in Jesus Christ, has renounced Lordship. I think something almost the opposite: it is because Jesus is Lord (and every knee shall ultimately bow before him, and every tongue confess his Lordship) that Christians...
A long exposure in the last light of the evening, the Katsura River and Togetsu Bridge, with Mt. Ogura in the background.
npm logo TL;DR: In September 2025 a self‑replicating worm, tracked as Shai‑Hulud, turned the npm ecosystem into a lateral‑movement playground. Maintainer accounts were phished, popular packages were hijacked, new malicious versions propagated through CI/CD backdoors, and secrets were scraped to infect even more...
when i collapsed onto the couch next to my mum this afternoon—after having spent the past hour and a half frantically occupying myself with whatever job, errand or "see-and-do" that my addled brain could conjure up for me—i think we both knew there was something wrong. it was confirmed when she asked me how the...
Quick library time read. I printed the 2 essays I enjoyed the most to use in future blog posts, because I had to laugh at how times have NOT change.
"Veduta del Campo de' Giesuiti" from the "Gran Teatro di Venezia", published by Domenico Lovisa, c. 1717.
I am the endurance in your long hikes the fortitude in all your commitments the sheer resilience in your cold showers the exuberance in each of your long days the star dust permeating every fibre of your being the unflinching devotion to your way of living the fountain of your inexhaustible creativity I am the...
Virtue signaling is great actually. Clearly communicating our values can prevent a lot of grief and help stand up for what’s right. Early on before I started writing more explicitly about politics I got a couple of “I love your blog but why don’t you write more about the supremacy of the Aryan Race?” and I’m like oh...
Day 33, What are five issues that have affected your political life? I personally don’t have bunper stickers. I don’t relate my political beliefs to folks. Well perhaps an exception to family that ask. But, honestly, fuck politics. Its devisive, for perhaps the worst reasons. Or human reasons, I don’t know. So,...
Today's lunch break was at the Blue Jay Restaurant, a diner as classic as you could imagine. I got a chicken gyro and sat under this still from The Killing of a Sacred Deer, a movie with many scenes filmed in Cincinnati — including this very booth. +
Things that happened the last week of September going into October (Sept 29 - Oct 3)
I always wanted to be a person that ran. I was a fast kid, always at the top of elementary school gym class in the 50-yard dash and a frequent base stealer in my Little League days. But I never actually, really ran. I joined track in high school and peaced out after two days. That was the extent of it. As I got...
September 2025. Werrington. Peterborough. Another year, another micropub in the suburbs of Peterborough, which could really do with something new and exciting in the city centre so I can bore you with descriptions of naves and fan vaulting in the marvellous cathedral, one of the UK’s greatest. But the Butchers Arms...

While we posses advanced manufacturing and research, we have somehow been unable to adequately transform these advantages into a prominent tech industry1. With the...
Decided that BookWyrm was just not for me, and trying out a different book-tracking app, Bookmory!
A while ago, I scored a couple of super cheap Fujitsu Futro S-series thin clients that I now use to self-host my own homemade applications. To keep an eye on them, I wanted to use a lightweight monitoring tool, and after some lazy research, I decided on Beszel.
