The Beauty of Nature

Franz Graf

My “career” in photography has started long ago and slowly but steadily. One of the triggers that ignited my passion was when my wife and me started to do more and more hiking. During those hikes we experienced so many epic vistas that I wanted to capture. The primary goal was to conserve memories for ourselves, family and friends. Especially for those who could not hike together with us. Joining Social Media platforms gave me an incredible boost in both, creativity and skills: I started to follow some professionals in the field, educated myself, learned through their YouTube channels and practiced, practiced, practiced. This quickly led to significantly better results which triggered more positive feedback. And the feedback motivated me even more to go out hiking in all kinds of weather and seasons .. a happy spiral was started. After a while I realized that I would never achieve the quality of professional landscapers who go out in inhumane times to grab one great shot. I tried – but it did not bring me satisfaction. I primarily go out for hiking, grab the photos during the tour and try to bring the whole hiking experience to the people following my journey.

Not every hike delivers stunning photos, and that’s okay. A recent walk near Ebersberg took us through forests, along a lake, and past quiet villages—scenes that felt peaceful but proved tricky to capture. The light wasn’t ideal, the compositions didn’t quite work, and some shots fell short of expectations. Yet even...
Some hikes don’t need grand destinations or dramatic views — they just need to feel right. This solo trip from May 2026 was one of those satisfying days on a mountain I’ve climbed countless times. The route makes little logical sense, the summit is often crowded, and the descent rarely cooperates with photography....
Today’s Fotovorschlag on Mastodon is “Bäume” / “Trees”. Ah well, Trees – I do have a couple of them in my archive. But as we …
After six active days trekking the Black Forest, fatigue began to show in my feet and knees. On day seven, we chose a gentle, relaxed stroll along the Tonbach stream. The path, a mix of asphalt and forest road, offered peaceful views, informative signs, and charming sights.
On the sixth day of our Black Forest trip, we visited two special spots at a gentler pace after five active days. First, we explored the picturesque yet tourist-frequented Mummelsee, then hiked towards Hornisgrinde’s moorlands before retreating due to weather. Later, we ventured on a wild, natural forest path,...
A few weeks ago, I teamed up with Hanspeter Mair, the DAV Wegewarte organizer, to create a video for the Bavarian State Government’s volunteer office. It was my first time shooting a focused video with an interview. The day was a rewarding learning experience and the video has been well received.
On day five in the Schwarzwald, we hiked another one of Baiersbronn’s great "Himmelswege" trails. While the hike started along forest roads, the highlight was circling a tranquil, mirror-like lake surrounded by lush moss. The route unfolded through varied terrain, from narrow fern-lined paths to softly lighted mossy...
After a delightful day at the garden festival, we set out on a fresh hiking adventure in the Black Forest National Park, exploring a straight-line trail from Zuflucht to Ruhestein. The day was a mix of sunshine, wind, serene solitude, striking landscapes, and unexpected encounters along the Western Way trail.
On day 4 in the Schwarzwald, we skipped hiking to explore the Landesgartenschau, a vast regional garden show spreading 8 kilometers between Freudenstadt and Baiersbronn. Despite a brief rain shower and many visitors, the themed gardens in full bloom offered a splendid experience that felt like a unique kind of hike.
Day three in the Black Forest brought a mix of misty mornings, challenging humidity, and expected rain on one of Baiersbronn’s certified Genießerpfade trails.
Today’s topic of the #Fotovorschlag reminded me immediately about our sunrise-tour that I did in 2023 with two colleagues. I don’t do a lot of …
Our first day in the Black Forest unfolded in serene beauty, unfolding a six-hour hike through sun-dappled ridges and mossy streams. Beginning with quiet observation to awaken the photographic eye, we captured unique perspectives of the forest’s textures and light.
