The Beauty of Nature

Franz Graf

My “career” in photography has started long ago and slowly but steadily. One of the triggers that ignited my passion was when my wife and me started to do more and more hiking. During those hikes we experienced so many epic vistas that I wanted to capture. The primary goal was to conserve memories for ourselves, family and friends. Especially for those who could not hike together with us. Joining Social Media platforms gave me an incredible boost in both, creativity and skills: I started to follow some professionals in the field, educated myself, learned through their YouTube channels and practiced, practiced, practiced. This quickly led to significantly better results which triggered more positive feedback. And the feedback motivated me even more to go out hiking in all kinds of weather and seasons .. a happy spiral was started. After a while I realized that I would never achieve the quality of professional landscapers who go out in inhumane times to grab one great shot. I tried – but it did not bring me satisfaction. I primarily go out for hiking, grab the photos during the tour and try to bring the whole hiking experience to the people following my journey.

A winter hike on a familiar loop became an exercise in observation and experimentation. Without pressure to capture the perfect shot, I discovered new perspecitves, practiced composition and new techniques.
A reluctant start to a winter hike turned into a rewarding day on the mountain. With temperatures plunging below freezing and low-hanging clouds, hesitation nearly kept me on the couch. But a nudge from my wife - and a pair of heated warming padsmade the change.
Some days, the weather doesn’t invite adventure — just cold, wind, and low clouds. Last Tuesday was one of those days, and I nearly stayed in. But I opted for a quick "training mountain" hike. The closed summit trail forced an early turnaround, yet the descending clouds turned an ordinary workout into a surprise...

A foggy day at the Kochelsee turned into a lesson in patience and perspective. With dense mist obscuring the usual views, I wandered with my camera, searching for calm amid the chaos.
Last weekend, I didn’t feel like doing a long hike. The weather seemed uninviting, or perhaps I was just feeling lazy. Work had drained much of my energy, and the thought of a demanding trek didn’t appeal to me. Instead, I checked the webcams of the surrounding area and noticed fog blanketing the region around...
Not every hike needs to be epic to leave an impression. A short November walk to Seekarkreuz in Lenggries—familiar trails, hazy views, and a surprisingly sharp wind—reminded me that even common summits can feel extraordinary when the weather plays along.
The first snow of the season called for a short winter hike — no grand plans, just a quick round in the nearby mountains. Some nice motives, a surprising encounter and a reminder to think about some winter basics were all along the way.
I didn’t attend the recent themes of the FotoVorschlag because I didn’t have anything to contribute. Yet, today morning when I saw today’s theme ‘Autumn …
This bike and hike adventure had been on my list for years. Starting with a long ascent on forest roads, the real challenge began when I switched to hiking—navigating faint trails along steep meadows. The reward was breathtaking views, though cloud shadows forced me to wait for the right light. A painful blister...
For today’s #Fotovorschlag, I chose this photo from “The Whiteout” collection. I took it during a winter hike where we entered the clouds and experienced …
