Sal

I'm Sal, and this is my spot. I'm a middle-aged guy with a wife, kids, and a job. Isn't that exciting?? I've had several blogs over the years and have enjoyed all of them. With each iteration, I lower my ambitions, take it less seriously, and try to have more fun. This one is another step in all of those directions, and I'm hoping it sticks around the longest. Disclaimer: I tend to write in short timeboxes and following the 70% rule. If a post seems shallow or half-baked ... yep!

Thanks to Chris for his post, Superscript and Subscript Line Heights, which helped me fix my busted footnote superscript styling. Here’s an example of what my blog looked like a few hours ago: See how the space between the first and...
I wrote earlier about reworking my blog so that I manage it remotely over SSH. Here’s an update on that. TLDR: success! Connecting I use Zed’s Remote Development to edit my blog content and run git commands over SSH. It works really...
Writing to share the Alfred team’s latest blog post: Handcrafted with Care: Alfred’s Core Values I use Alfred constantly all day long, and I feel these values in action as I do. I appreciate how the team has stayed true to these values...
I try not to write or even think much about AI because I find it so … ugh. But this struck me. From Anil Dash’s post, The Majority AI View, which I found in Nicolas’s May links: One of the reasons we don’t hear about [the more] popular,...
I know I know, 2020 called and wants its exercise bike back. I was about to buy one of these a year ago, but then I got a screaming deal on a different “smart bike” (a Stages SB20) that can send power and cadence data to apps like Zwift....
Puppy wrote a post, the appeal of lowercase text. There are several comments on Bubbles disagreeing, saying that lowercase posts are hard to read. I won’t agree or disagree with the commenters. I believe they are being honest about their...
I liked Kev’s recent post, Upgrading My Home Internet to Full Fibre. I too wrote about upgrading to fiber (as we Yanks spell it), but this is the part I want to talk about: I remember when I upgraded from a 56k MODEM, to ~2Mbps broadband...
From Kottke: The Night Witches were an all-female Soviet bomber regiment that attacked Nazi forces during World War II. An attack technique of the night bombers involved idling the engine near the target and gliding to the bomb-release...
I’m dictating this into iA Writer on my phone as I head home after walking my kids to school. Dropping my kids at school, let alone taking the extra ten minutes each way to walk them to school, often feels like a burden at first. “But I...
Loved Amanda’s post, Make Email Fun Again! I completely agree. For a year or so, I used Fastmail only for my blogging-related emails. While my Gmail inbox was mostly an exhausting stream of garbage and low-value chores, a red badge on my...

Tuscany

My wife and I recently escaped to Tuscany together for ten days with no kids. Most parents of young-ish kids will appreciate this as a rare and profound opportunity. We stayed three nights in Florence, three nights in the countryside at...
No more analytics for me! After moving my blog, I thought I’d be using Cloudflare’s analytics, which are semi-built-in and purport to be privacy-first and lightweight. But when I went to set them up, I learned they’re not available for...
Bloggers have written many words about the pros and cons of writing anonymously. From Dave Rupert’s interview with Manu: If I were to do it all again, I would maybe try a pen name. Having my name associated to my blog has done well for...
I decided to move my blog away from Bear Blog. It's now built with 11ty and hosted on Cloudflare Pages. I still very much appreciate and admire Bear. It helped me get back into blogging for the nth time by offering a very low barrier to...
I think it worked! Here are the rough steps I took to move my blog: Clone the 11ty blog template and get it roughly into shape. Push the repo to Gitlab. Set up a Cloudflare Pages application and connect it to the Gitlab repo. Download...
