In order to follow a proper 3-2-1 backup strategy, you should have three copies of your important data: two local on different media types, and one off site. For local, I have a DAS with two 14TB drives configured in a RAID 1 array1 and a RPI5 with a 4TB drive (my most important data is around 1.5TB). For the off...
[Equations in this post may not look right (or appear at all) in your RSS reader. Go to the original article to see them rendered properly.] I decided to start learning about machine learning a couple of weeks ago. Partly because it sounds interesting, partly because I think I have enough math to handle it, and...
This is the seventh post in my 'hitting the digital brakes'-series on changing how I use technology and where I stopped using it altogether. These are the previous posts: the joys of imperfection Do we really need the latest tech My e-reader made me a worse reader Not everything needs to be in the cloud Anti AI? Be...

I'm back in geminispace Hey there, just small update that I've been doing a separate tiny blog in geminispace. You can find it in here if you also use gemini protocol: gemini://akselmo.dev/ I also have a tinylog there that is basically gemini version of fedi. We'll see how long that stays around, I just wanted a...
The Firefox team wants help ranking Interop 2027 proposals. There are some great features in there. For whatever reason, I cut myself off at eight: border-shape so I can design some wild new containers. Gap decorations to simplify dividers in my grids. Customizable <select> because the demos I’ve seen are really...
AutoDescriptor: Added categories via AutoDescriptor bot [taxonomy v3] There's an English turn of phrase I find odd. I see it often. A sort of fake collaboration. It involves something like "I never asked for this" or "We never asked for this" or whatever. The latest iteration came in response to...
“We are our memory… that chimerical museum of shifting shapes, that pile of broken mirrors.” It is already disorienting enough to accept that our attention only absorbs a fraction of the events and phenomena unfolding within and around us at any given moment. Now consider that our memory only retains a fraction of...
Nice moment in iOS: when you reduce the volume to zero, subtitles come up automatically – and they go away the moment you increase the volume again. This is from YouTube on the iPad, but it appears to be system-wide: (Feels extra meaningful in the face of so many people playing their media on speaker in public these...
It was February 2026 when I realised that software development had completely changed and I essentially stopped writing code by hand. Over the next couple of months I changed our Linear statuses and set up a couple of claude code instances, running in tmux, with cron jobs set to deal with various scenarios. The...
First fire of the year and Sid is loving it. Not sure we appreciated the giant queen wasp that came bumbling out of the chimney though. Thanks for reading this post via RSS. RSS is ace, and so are you. ❤️ You can reply to this post by email, or leave a comment.
This is an entry from my journal. Earlier today I read Sacha Chua’s latest blog post with the title Continuing my experiment with (semi-)retirement. There I learnt about the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), which is a test to self-assess one’s potential autism. As this is a topic that interests me, I took the test. My...
Years ago, I broke up with someone abruptly. She and my friend were over. The two began arguing. Upset, she ran outside into the rain. My friend commented that she was being ridiculous, that I should break up with her. I’m not usually so impressionable as to take such an action based on an offhand comment, but I had...
A friend recently shared with me a story about how his coworker betrayed him at a previous job. After telling the story, everyone we were chatting with started sharing their toxic workplace stories (everyone had one). Someone then said: "The experience honestly gave me PTSD. And they wonder why people would rather...

I’ve had the same phone for the past five years, an iPhone 13 Pro which I bought for two reasons: My previous phone’s (iPhone 12 Mini) battery was worn out and had become worn out super quickly I wanted the LiDAR sensor for the work I was doing at the time Anyway, it still does everything I need in a phone (which...
Hopefully there won't be a part 3. Two weeks ago, I wrote about how a mosquito infiltrated our homes and bit me like 4 times. Since then, there hasn't been an incident. We eagerly assumed the mosquito decided to leave the warmth of our abode and the abundance of free food to venture out back into the wild, where the...
This is the start of the Pchum Ben holiday here in Cambodia. Its about three days of national holiday. Most businesses do not close these days but some people take time off to be with family. I don’t really do the Cambodian holidays just like we do not do the American ones. For me, nothing really changes. The things...
This week was good. I got back to my routine after two weeks of travel and a hectic schedule. Work is progressing well; I did two P.T. sessions, a game, and a run walk. I am still away from a five day active week. But I think I am consistently reaching three to four day active weeks, which isn’t bad. We are in the...

I must admit to being rather mystified by all the brouhaha attending the display of the on-loan Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum. Surely if anyone was that interested they had only to hop over the Channel and take a look at it in situ in Bayeux. I was there some years ago, dutifully inspected it, and was...
[Content warning: suicide] This will be a morbid post; forgive me. It will be hard to write this well. I will write it badly. You are young or middle aged -- healthy you think. You get a fatal diagnosis out of the blue, let's suppose. You have a few months to live and no cure. You will seek whatever pleasure, peace,...
💡Go read Flanders, George and His Pimavanserin now!Are you a big fan of crows?I confess my obsession is more with pigeons—my favorites! But writing a story from the POV of a bird is hard enough without benefitting from the intelligence of a crow. It’s hard to imagine Pimavanserin snatching french fries off the...
If you’re reading this post, and found it through Mastodon, Matt did a thing. I’m working on making a python script that will auto-toot my posts automatically, then get the toot ID so that the comments show up. Doing it through a Docker container and a bit of CI magic on Gitlab. If you read this and didn’t come here...
October 2026. Sheffield. I spent Sunday morning giving RM Towers a thorough Autumn clean before heading back to Kent, by which I mean a clean that would meet most bloke’s lesser standards of housekeeping. By noon I was bored, and idly glancing at the Women’s FA Cup fixtures (spoilers alert). Ooh, Barnsley Women,...
OverviewThe dangerous systems this week are the ones expected to make other work safer or easier: a backup console, remote-access gateways, collaboration platforms, data-center switches, AI services, WordPress plugins, source repositories, DNS registries, and inexpensive phones. If today were a genre, what would it be? Pick a matching song. It’s a birthday weekend! Today we have Jacks’ party, and tomorrow we have his cousins party. To say Jack is excited for his party is an understatement, we’ve just got to try and keep him calm adjacent until this afternoon! “Get The Party Started” by...

I am hurricane watching, and you might ask why. I will always keep a wary eye on any Gulf or Atlantic hurricanes--even before Hurricane Helene came to my neighborhood, I was this way. This week-end, I'm headed to Indianapolis, and Hurricane Isaias is too. I was going to drive on Sunday, but since the hotel could add...

During my extended Summer break I was able to spend more time with friends in the village in Spain. We spent a lot of time together, laughing, eating and drinking, and going on a few trips. One evening, at the village bar, we were sitting outside talking nonsense as usual, and generally having a good time. We...
