What’s a hidden gem or underrated song you love? I think it was a recommendation from a website that took me to this artist. Describe as emo meets alt-country, I loved their sound, and especially (as you’ll have noted already, Dear Reader) the lyrics. I saw them live twice in two different, very small, venues in...
Trains cross over the Kanda River next to Ochanomizu Station. Rather than shoot from the nearby Hijiribashi Bridge, I chose this spot on Sotobori Street in order to get closer to the red Marunouchi Line trains. I was able to get all four trains in a single photo, whereas last time I needed to composite two different...
I just realized that I don't know what hypertext actually is. Like I know HTML and I build HTTP APIs for a living, both of which have hypertext in their names, but what is actually hypertext? What is the definition of hypertext? A quick visit to wikipedia later tells me that for text to be considered hypertext, it...
I've had lots of hobbies over the years. To name a few off the top of my head, there's been fish keeping, guitar, harmonica, fountain pens, watches, motorbikes, this blog, web development, 3D printing, tattoos, digital minimalism, table tennis, and many more. Some of my hobbies have stuck, but I've never gotten so...
Welcome to my kinda newe and almost improved blog. I built this from a very nice howto I found on the 11ty site. I added in some additional things I wanted not included in the documentation. Fixed a few things I found along the way. I really wanted to build a thing i could kinda call mine. The whole idea with it is...
Here’s what happens when you try to update your Android phone if it’s low on battery (even if it’s connected to a charger): It’s a pretty cheap error UI, a misaligned string thrown carelessly in between existing interface pieces. It doesn’t even bother explaining what “too low” means. Compare this to what the...
Yesterday’s post included this plot: I figured it was worth a quick post to show how I made it. I had already done most of the work back in 2022 in a Mathematica notebook I made to support my original orbital curvature post. So I copied the pertinent calculations from that notebook, pasted them into a new one, and...
Yesterday, my plans put me near an Apple Store so I used this as an opportunity to get my iPhone 15’s battery replaced. I had been putting the AppleCare+-covered replacement off for awhile as I live in the no-man’s-land of a “smedium-sized” city that is about 2 hours from 3 different Apple Stores and didn’t want to...
On January 12, 2024, I published an article about then-ongoing renovations at the Carroll Gardens branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. You can read my original report for the project details. For our instant purposes, it suffices to say that the library – one of the beautiful original Carnegie libraries – had been...
I’m using neatstats for my blog as a beta tester (it’s a service from omg.lol and I love it!). Today I was not feeling well and I needed to write something fun but had no idea. I saw the link to the stats in my bookmarks bar, and was curious to see what posts were clicked on the most. I needed a little confidence...
On October 14 2026 we will ship curl 8.23.0. The next iteration in the never-ending series of version bumps from the curl project. We always think of the next release as the best version we ever did – and this time is no exception. Decades of collected experiences and meticulous polishing has lead us to this....

If you've followed my blog for a while, you know of my love-hate relationship with technology. Video games, in particular, are a good example of this. I go through stretches where I enjoy video games, and longer stretches where I say I've sworn off them forever. But maybe it doesn't have to be all or nothing for me...
Two new additions to my self-hosted music setup today: Multi-Scrobbler: I created an account on ListenBrainz and now scrobble to Last.fm and ListenBrainz. Maybe I get more recommendations with accounts on both platforms. Multi-Scrobbler seems to be the perfect tool to keep the scrobbles in sync. Koito: A little...
“However meaningless and vain, however dead life appears, the man of faith, of energy, of warmth… steps in and does something.” During our recent conversation at the Boston Book Festival, the wise and wonderful Amanda Palmer spoke about the harrowing experience of watching her best friend die and reflected:...

Table of Contents The diaeresis and em-dash Acronyms, contractions & brands Translation Formatting Conclusion One of the things I find surprisingly interesting is reading the style guides of different publishers or newspapers. Style guides generally cover how written content should be structured and presented. They...
Back in the day, referrer spam used to be a means to trick a website publisher into thinking another website was sending visitors their way. It’s something I’ve seen often. I’ll be looking through my referrer logs, and see traffic apparently emanating from a website, usually one I’ve not heard of before. At first...
I’ve been listening to podcasts for over 20 years (and have had a couple of my own in that time) and honestly, these days the format is beyond saturated. In one sense, there are a lot of high quality, very well produced podcasts, but there is so much sameness out there. I subscribed to 34 movie podcasts and they all...
On Sunday, I went through my old files looking for a St. Francis poem that I thought I had written--but I was thinking of an Ash Wednesday poem. While searching, I found an old manuscript of Jesus in the world poems, many of which I had forgotten writing. Because my time is short this morning, I'll post one of them...
07 Panic | INDEX | 09 Ram Garlic is the best stinky herb in the world and a true gift from God. It is nature’s antibiotic! Try gently roasting an entire bulb of garlic in a medium oven for as long as it takes the cloves to become soft and creamy. Squeeze them from their papery shell and spread on bread or...
> Omarchy is a fascist project that normalizes fascist thinking for everyone entering that community (even unknowingly). The baseline has to be not to use that system. And as people who believe in human rights and dignity, in community and a tech world that can be better we need to oppose Omarchy. Need to make sure...
October 2026. Sheffield. Heeley marks the start of Sheffield’s antiques quarter and the long road to Chesterfield. Reddit describes it (unfairly) as the “lentil belt”, less posh than Sharrow Vale to the west, and (if you’re fit) walking distance to the station. I reckon the two pubs just up the hill, either side of...
The Firefox team just launched a website that allows users to rank the Interop 2027 proposals that they care about. And I care about things - for selfish reasons and for work. And that's a challenge. I want to rank things that only benefit me and my blog but I also want to rank things that would make my daily job...
Working on admin stuff today. Yesterday's cleaning day was really productive. Since I was successful in my achievements, I felt confident that I could take a break from writing another accountability blog post. The day was off to a normal start. I had breakfast while playing my game, but then I got really tired....
The Quick Primer for Old School Gaming was a huge influence on me when I first started playing blorbily but looking at the 2024 edition of that primer now I can see how far we’ve drifted apart. Sure, someone overhearing our tables wouldn’t hear a difference. The “moose head example” would sound the same. Players...
A melancholy anniversary today – one that seems to get worse each year as it triggers ever more naked displays of Jew-hate. However – a big, welcome 'However' – today is also the centenary of the first radio broadcast of Choral Evensong, the world's longest-running outdoor broadcast. Radio 3 is marking the occasion...
♠ Problem statement: git clone {repo} hangs. How to troubleshoot? Assumption: we’re cloning via SSH, not via HTTPS. First, ensure the proper SSH key is being used: % ssh -vT {repo} If that’s not the case, you’ll need to modify ~/.ssh/config accordingly (out of scope of this post). Next up, run: GIT_TRACE=1 git clone...
This is an entry from my journal. It is about pacing ourselves and maintaining a balance in our life. There are so many things I have learnt from football in no small part because I was paying close attention the entire time. Your physical and mental states must be in harmony, otherwise you are thrown off balance. A...
Consider a business owner being asked to approve $15,000 a year for better recovery capability. The proposal lists backup storage, protected copies, and scheduled restore testing. It explains the service well enough to price it. It says much less about what would happen if the company’s order-processing system were...
In what is being called “the most important event in the history of mathematics” (by an AI), OpenAI, using an advanced model not yet available to the public, yesterday released 722 mathematics manuscripts containing 337 results it has generated on open mathematics problems. Italian Calculators (images via MoMA)...
