tldr: the live version is here: https://curl.se/perf/ How fast is “fast” and is it good enough? Does it run as fast now as it did before or was there a regression? What exactly needs to be fast? How fast is it? These are questions that many projects and products face, and in curl we are no different. Yet,...
I am an information hoarder. I am somehow unhappy if I don’t get new information, new insights, new aspects. That’s not limited to technology but to literally everything. And since I do more and more self-hosting, I have two services on my candidates list: Readeck and Linkwarden. Then, with the rise of AI, the whole...
🗓️//June 2026 Audition Round-up A roundup of auditions, recalls, and booked jobs from June 2026. Published by AHE. on 6st August 2026 Auditions - 5 of those auditions Ads - 4 (self-tapes) Theatre - 1 (in-person) Moving is the most stressful thing you'll ever do. This month I auditioned for a panto for the first time...
Currently, I'm working on adding support for the Nex Protocol to Rogallo. Having Port1900 as the client library, and having done the bulk of the work in Rogallo, I needed things in place to be able to add some nex://-related documentation too -- which is where SmolServe comes in. So I've dropped v1.1.0 on PyPI,...
The 747 shaped how I understood distance, family, and wonder. As it disappears from the skies, I'm trying to figure out what to hand my son instead.
“The Cave” by Mumford & Sons Listen on Apple Music Your browser does not support the audio element. What’s your favorite song about letting go? For all they have been pilloried, their first album was wonderful. My favourite track leapt out at me on my first listen, although it took a few more listens to figure out...
My review of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”.
As for this project of losing weight by writing about it on the blog, you’ll understand that, hell, I’ve failed spectacularly. Despite Manuel’s friendly prodding, I gave up a good while ago. Coming back from Brussels, along with good beer and good chocolate, I’ll also be bringing home a generous package of good...
I have ADHD. Probably.1 My entire adolescence was defined by forgetting to do my homework, disappointing everyone around me, and being told by every adult that I was lazy, “just” needed to try harder, and wasn’t living up to my potential. I’ll be working on the resulting shame and anxiety for the rest of my life.2...

Cinema Paradiso (1988) The moving image as a refuge from worldly caresMy love of cinema, both the medium and the physical space, is well known to those close to me. In a previous post I've mentioned how it's not uncommon for me to head straight to my favourite picture house after work. It is a compulsion at this...
For the entirety of Cocoa's life, people constantly misspelled her name when referring to her, even if 98% of the time the spelling was literally RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEIR FACES. It has always bothered me, and there was a 50/50 chance on whether or not I corrected people. It all depended on the situation. There were...
Some distant relatives visited me recently. I had not seen one of my elder cousins in roughly two decades, though I had kept in contact with the others. Cousin remarked that I have not changed at all. I happen to do a clean shave of my facial hair these days, which makes me look younger, so that story checks out. Me...
In 2021, I wrote about common pitfalls of low-code solutions and today I'd like to revisit the topic to judge whether or not "AI"[1] has improved the citizen developer experience. To quickly summarize the old post: Nancy from accounting is great at accounting, and she can't be faulted for not knowing anything about...
Usually, historically, The Five is never ranked: it's just five things in the order I think of them. But this one definitely is ranked. Maybe I need a new posty type… Here are my top 5 Irish teas and I will not be taking questions. Barry's Gold : Thompson's Irish Breakfast 🥇 — Thompson's Everyday Barry's Original...
Christina may have seen her first, but she was trying with all her might to get eye-level with my tall ass, so this one falls on me. Introducing Penny! (Short for Penelope of course)
Repurposed Grocery Store - Miami, Arizona It is difficult to be honest in my writing. I am not referring to creative liberties and mild exaggerations. I assume all writers are guilty of this from time to time. It is part of the storytelling process. When I share my writing, I want it to provide the reader with a...
We spend our days making plans, making promises, making predictions about the possible, and yet the most bewildering thing about life is that its imagination is always greater than that of the living — life keeps surprising us, keeps reminding us that all too often the wildest bet is the winning bet. And all the...
First sighting of the people mover at Los Angeles International Airport. Now undergoing testing, it is expected to open for service in October. スカイリンク ロサンゼルス国際空港でピープルムーバーが初めて目撃された。現在試験運行中であり、10月に運行開始となる見込みだ。
OverviewThis week was a reminder that the patch queue is not a flat list. Three newly cataloged exploited vulnerabilities, including a Windows zero-day, demand attention before the rest of the August update pile. VMware, Adobe, SAP, and TPM maintainers also shipped fixes that deserve a deliberate inventory check...
An examination of the word “speculative”I’ve always disliked the term “speculative fiction.” I don’t mean I dislike actual works classified as speculative fiction, mind you, but the term itself. There have been arguments over the meaning of this term for going on almost a hundred years now, and it’s fallen in and...
2026-08-14Hello!I don't know what caused this creek to dry up. It would be easy to attribute it to the climate crisis at large, but I wonder if the water is pooling up in a different spot. It's not like this area hasn't had rain — there was an overnight shower two nights ago.The water level is there — there's some...
Busy days around these parts as the summer starts its decline. Both cars failed inspection and getting them up to spec was a nice chunk of change. Our younger kiddo is starting high school next week, while our older one is moving into her apartment this weekend before starting her sophomore year of college. My...
If you listen to podcasts about endurance sports, you'll hear a common theme come up among the hikers, cyclists and runners whose idea of fun is covering long distances under their own power. Many of them are recovering addicts and alcoholics. They often say "I traded one addiction for another." That's me. After a...
The Touch Bar arrived in 2016 seemingly already pre-doomed, on a generation of machines that had a “we’ve run out of ideas” smell all around them. The arrow keys were reshaped, the keyboard got a slimming down, and even the beloved MagSafe wasn’t, in fact, safe. All of these changes would prove unpopular and get...
There’s not a strict correlation between the presence of a figure in my writing and his or her presence in my mind. Among the thinkers thus underrepresented in my writing are Mikhail Bakhtin, Ivan Illich, Iris Murdoch, Lesslie Newbigin, and, above all, John Ruskin. But Ruskin is the only one of those figures who, in...
I’ve been revisiting some old archives in my writing folders, because to be honest, I’ve forgotten a lot of what’s in them. I’d say these particular folders go back about fifteen years, and friends, that’s a lot of writing just sitting there gathering dust. Most of it can just stay there, to be honest. It’s writing...
♠ Problem statement: asking a coding agent whether it runs in a sandbox returns a confident answer derived from its system prompt, not from the machine it is actually running on. I asked Pi exactly that. The reply was assured: No — pi itself doesn’t sandbox tool execution. When I run bash, edit, or write, they...
One of the highlights of any year for me is when I get to play in a James Dempsey Breakpoints Jam — and we’ve got one coming up in a few days! It’s this Thursday Aug. 20 at Stoup Brewing in Ballard. Start gathering around 6 pm to hang with fellow Apple nerds. The show will start around 7 pm. See the Xcoders post...
I. Well It’s About Damn Time You cut that out. You stop it right now. This article isn’t saying anything new to most of us, but it is saying it, and that’s something most voices in a position to reach the horizon aren’t bothering to do. The basic mechanics will be familiar to anyone that’s worked for a—checks...
Reblogging this because it’s fascinating to see how this can be done. I probably personally won’t use it for my own personal workflows, as I prefer to be present during the formation of the draft, but I’m thinking of creating a system where, once I complete the draft it gets automatically proofread and parked in a...
Another victim of the AI bubble: Mico, Microsoft Copilot’s mascot that looks like a blob of semen. According to the company, it’s been demoted from Copilot Voice and now only shows up in Copilot Learn Live. (What are Copilot Voice and Copilot Learn Live? Your guess is as good as mine.) Mico’s near-demise is part of...
Hey you. Yes, you. You're a writer, right? Bet your hard disk is filled with awesome stories you've written. I also bet you've got some skeletons hidden in a dusty closeted corner of your hard disk. Files that contain bad writing! You know, the horrors that should never see daylight again.Writing you may have worked...
I had to build columns of items moving in opposite directions when a user scrolls the page. See how I did it.
By: Adrian Tchaikovsky | Rating: 3/5A little frustrating to read, as seems to be the standard for this series. I liked the lost colony idea, but the presentation is very fragmented. I guess that's on purpose, but it doesn't work for me. I wont be getting part 4 of the series, I'm done.
It’s been a while since my last parkrun post. Today I was down the creek at Kirkdale Reserve parkrun for my twelfth finish there. That puts me a step closer to lifting my p-index to 12, the goal I set out earlier in the year. Over the last four months I’ve been chipping away at the other events that sat between me...
This week, something happened in the world of rock music that nobody thought was ever going to happen again - Ritchie Blackmore rejoined Deep Purple live on stage for the first time in decades. Blackmore is one of my favourite guitar players and easily one of the greates guitarists of all time. Along with late...

You know the ones: “The web is dying.” “No one will create anymore.” Blah blah blah. Come on, chin up. Sure, things might get worse by some measurements. Maybe much worse. But for all we know, that could lead to humans getting so fed up with modern tech that we embark on some sort of renaissance. Or it could be...
A one-sheet on posture toward the people around you The principle, and its known failure Jon Postel wrote it for computers talking to each other: send strictly correct output, accept anything you can reasonably interpret. It let a fragile early internet work despite everyone’s software being slightly wrong....
Earlier this year I wrote Vibe-coding Brings the Power of Emacs to Everything in a more positive manner surrounding this topic. This is the negative version. I am not a radical in either direction surrounding this debate. But the internet does not reward subtlety or nuance, as I also pointed out in Three Thoughts on...
Follows the Minions in 1920s Hollywood as they search for frightening creatures for their monster movie, partner with a green creature, and must save the planet after unleashing monsters. It’s zany, it’s funny, FILLED with cameos and references, making this a great watch for kids from age 3 to 103. The story is not...
David Charles, professor emeritus of philosophy at Yale University, has died. Professor Charles was well-known for his work in ancient philosophy, and especially on Aristotle. He is the author of The Undivided Self (2021), Aristotle on Meaning and Essence (2000), Aristotle’s Philosophy of Action (1984), among other...
Up until today, I've been using the title 'Blogbear' for this blog. The eagle-eyed reader, whichever one of you that is, will possibly have spotted that I've changed the title to 'Wobbly Bear' now. The other one will just check... oh yes, so he has! Although I liked Blogbear – and I spent some time attempting to...
On Monday, I came back to my day job from a weeklong vacation wherein we did birthdaversary stuff and packing / moving related activities. I rarely if ever talk about work here but one of the first things out the gate when I logged in was that I apparently missed a companywide meeting on how Claude use is now...

Let us complete our perfect Pook-Emu Bee link week before our regularly scheduled day off for Newsletter Saturday. I spotted this TV cabinet in Downtown Brooklyn at approximately 7:40 in the evening on June 28, 2026. [!NOTE](This post was handwritten on Monday 10th of august and corresponds to week 32 but to reasons mentioned bellow, posted today.) Officially on holidays for about a week now. It was a fun week at the holiday park. And while my aim with my blog restrict the informality of this post — the practice of soft prose —...
One of my favourite things to do online is perusing the IndieWeb. It's fun, and I've been able to discover a tonne of interesting people along the way. But every now and then, I come across someone who has published their salary history on their site. At first, I thought this was a great idea. It feels transparent,...

We took a drive over to Eastern Passage this afternoon to have a snack, throw some rocks in the ocean and check out some sea birds. Something that's interesting 1 is that there is a golf course on the other side of the road, and you can hear when someone makes a shot that they aren't really happy with. It was also...
My whole life I’ve felt like I have great eyesight (and I still do). But lately I’ve been noticing what feels like…some slippage. Nothing big. Just this feeling in the morning like, as my brain and body wake up, my vision needs to as well. The strange novelty of this phenomenon was operating in some small part of my...
While I was developing tooling for my job this weekend, I found a few blogposts that I don't remember writing: Advice for staying in the hospital for a week The Unbound Scepter Using Clankers to Help Me Process Surgery Checking the date range, they coincide with when I was in the hospital earlier this year. I have...
The other day I was helping a client with a Shopify site. She wanted the layout in a particular way and provided mockups, but as I was setting it up, I realized her mockup didn't match any of the available layouts. That meant I would have to custom build one, which would take twice as long and cost twice as much...
August 2026. Frome. The pub blogging community is very tight knit and supportive. Oxford Nick aka Prop Up The Bar has been receiving our support since posting this photo on Tuesday night; I shall be stealing that Olivia Rodrigo reference for future blog titles (see also : Bad Idea, Right). Kentish Paul had...
