Emacs never ceases to amaze me. There’s a nato-region function that converts plain text in region to NATO spelling alphabet. It’s so Charlie-Oscar-Oscar-Lima

As threatened, I moved the blog to pico.sh pgs because pico.sh is so dang cool and much more in the spirit of indiewebbing than Cloudflare. That’s all I’ll say about it, and I say it only because I once again ask: if I broke anything, please email me! With that, I promise I’ll stop blogging about this blog for the...
Re: Bloggers, can we make better titles for our posts? Michael Harley 寫了篇 Bloggers, can we make better titles for our posts?，請你先去讀一遍原文吧，在這裡等你，几分鐘後再見 :) 歡迎回來！ ...

Replied to re: The importance of owning physical (and digital) media when possible by Steve (An Almost Anonymous Blog) The second article is simply disappointing, because not only does this mean you can't own games anymore, but there are cascading impacts: it breaks the model of used video game stores (at least for...
You don't even have to be particularly into running or the rest of Casey's content. I just thought that his core message is really helpful. (Skip to the relevant part.) This tiny blog post had been sitting in my drafts for so long that I had forgotten about it. It was Robert Birming who reminded me of it again: Day...

IA Writer on being Trapped in MS Office: Psychologically, Office is an obvious target because hardly anyone really enjoys working in it. Some may disagree, but in spite of its gigantic market share and iconic stand, it absorbs significant time and cognitive energy. Much of it is spent on formatting rather than...
There is a certain home at the junction of the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, and Columbia Street Waterfront District that likes to place seasonal and holiday-themed inflatable decorations outside for the enjoyment of passers-by. This home has provided many articles to this humble online...

Another week, another weekend. Our second annual prompted writing contest kicked off, but it's not too late to enter! If you're interested in trying your hand at writing a short story over the course of ten days, now's your chance! We are one entry away from our goal of 75, which will unlock five honorable mentions...
I'm a big Home Assistant fan and power user. It's the home automation platform of choice in our house and I've added many devices and automations, sometimes to the chagrin of Rachelle. We also have five cats so it only makes sense to use some automations to help manage all the cat chores. Top row: Lily and Mac....
Git branches and Emacs built-in VC Emacs VC Emacs VC is the built-in Emacs version control interface. It is very capable, and its use is intuitive. Emacs VC can be used with practically all version control systems. I have used it frequently with RCS and CVS. No need for Magit For my typical use of Git, VC offers all...
Venice started as a Byzantine duchy, ruled by a "dux", but at some point, they started chosing their own dux — or doge. When, or even who, is not clear.
Still can't believe this exists and I wish there was more of it You might recall that earlier this year I wrote about Mobile Suit Gundam 00 - Re:Build, a stage play adaptation of the first season of 2007's Mobile Suit Gundam 00. I had a blast with it, and apparently so did audiences because they ended up doing a...
As a Mass Effect fan, and I am very grateful that my wife gifted me the (relatively new) board game Mass Effect: Priority Hagalaz :) I am completely smitten with it! You can tell so much thought and love went into it by a huge fan who knows their stuff. The gameplay was translated so well to this format, and the...
“Dignity” by Deacon Blue Listen on Apple Music Your browser does not support the audio element. What’s a song you associate with your hometown? The town I grew up in, like many a small provincial town, is slowly morphing into yet another satellite town. The pubs are closing, the high street is being dismantled, and...
the meaning of blog ( blaugust #2, 8. August, 2026 ) Not too long ago, few months perhaps, I was wondering about an event that happened almost 25 years ago - my first public performance of computer music so to say. It is significant only to me, but also because at the time i was... people would say "out of my...
I haven't really been wanting to do much lately because of the guilt. I feel bad when I'm doing anything other than thinking about Cocoa, looking at photos and videos of her, or just sitting with the grief. It took me a while time to start reading again because of it. We've barely turned the TV on to watch anything,...
Expanding a homelab by adding a managed Unifi router, and a second mini computer.
In this ~15-minute video I show how to add conditions to abbrev-mode abbreviations that you define. The idea is to have those abbrevs expand only in certain cases. I use three examples, which I think cover the common needs. Code samples (defun my-french-p () "Return non-nil if `current-input-method' is French." (and...
I don’t know how I can live 31 years of my life and not have a solid task management system for anything, but I really don’t. The only “system” I’ve had is called “pick-up-a-new-app-use-it-for-3-months-and-ditch-it-for-another-app.” Some of the apps I’ve churned through were Remember the Milk, todoist, Things 3,...
This is a repost of something I wrote on Tumblr in 2011 :)---I have always been an avid reader, even more so as a child. I became a member of the library in our village when I just learned how to read. It was magical. When I was 10/11 years old I’d read through all the books in the kid section, including those meant...
My parents were young when I was born, only 17, but despite the relatively small time gap, we are from distinctly different generations. They've been divorced since the 70s, so their needs and circumstances, while similar, are still unique. Last year, my dad and his wife moved to an assisted living facility about a...
2026-08-08Hello!Continuing from yesterday, I went to the woods and walked on a trail for a couple of hours without listening to music of any kind. I can't say it was meditative, but it was at least a calming experience that I appreciate.I recall one of the videos from Courtney Victoria — I can't pull up exactly...

Design, style, and ergonomics are all high up on my interests when it comes to the world. If you’ve got something that does something amazing, that’s great. But if using it makes me want to kill myself, then you’ve failed. I’ve recently been working on designing a web page which visualizes the discovery of CVEs by a...
A weekend awayWe arrived in London yesterday morning. The primary reason for the visit was to see The Odyssey at the BFI IMAX, the largest screen in the UK, and one of the few places in the world where you can see a film projected in 70mm IMAX. We had seen James Gunn's Superman in this cinema, projected digitally,...

Last weekend, I took my kid out around town, and we went on a “photo walk,” which is what I’ve decided to call it. They’re taking a Journalism class, and they’ve been entrusted with a DSLR so they can get familiar with photography, so I figured we’d go and get some practice on our own before the year really gets...

Rule 436(g) was a four-line exemption. It said that when a nationally recognized rating agency’s rating appeared in a securities registration statement, that rating did not count as an expert opinion under Sections 7 and 11 of the Securities Act — so the agency never had to consent to being named, and could not be...
iPhone’s home button and then the swipe up home gesture are so important and well done that they probably need to be covered as Unsung Heroes, but I wanted to mention something else today as we’re revisiting the whole “app icons in squircles” story (my most recent post + Louie Mantia’s post). The first iPhone in...
Last edited 7 minutes ago. I recently talked about how I got a 3DS XL from a friend, and I've been playing a bunch of games there, testing out the little guy, trying to discover what I'm really into. Before my Nintendo Switch from 2022, I'd never owned (or frankly played) a gaming console, so it's all news to me....
Today is HTML Day, an annual celebration of HTML going 4 years . Here in San Francisco, our HTML Day meetup was at Robin Williams Meadow in Golden Gate Park. Eryn, EJ, and I biked there & back. We Stopped by Say Cheese on our way there for sandwiches and snacks. After a little bit of confusion we found several...
A poem written for Red Square, which I made for HTML Day 2026. The Cure in one ear. A Forest in view, in the other: fear.My feet refuse."No, God, please no! No! No! Noooo!"Afflicted, I clown. Unease, full mast!I wish to slow down. Must things move fast? I've missed the echoing drums, loud enough to hear. This...
I have three kids, currently approaching 5/3/3, who I truly love spending my days with. The most amazing thing to me is how much they show me a young fresh perspective on everything. At this age everything is new and exciting for them, and the best part is they invite me to participate in that feeling of...
A year or so ago I attended a company offsite, where (during a trivia game) my former boss showcased the fact that she'd had the IT team pull Slack usage numbers across the company, and that we should all guess who had the company's highest message counts.
Rogallo v1.6.0 is now available. This release concentrates on the addition of a newly-supported protocol, and improving what can be displayed in the viewer and how it looks. The headline change is the addition of support for the Spartan protocol. Having run into a couple of sites that either offered this as an...
I bought a new (used) camera on eBay. A Panasonic LUMIX G91 (also known as G90 or G95) with the LUMIX 14-140mm f3.5-5.6 lense. I took it for a short walk around the block and quite like the results so far, but I definitely have to get more practice and confidence with real cameras. The camera was sold for a pretty...
It was a regular Thursday at work. I tried to open Postman for the 3rd time in a row, and yet again everything froze and nothing would load. "Fine then." That's how Cielago was born. There are plenty of other tools out there for testing or interacting with APIs, however I had a few specific requirements. I needed...

Recently, someone on Mastodon shared this video titled "Apple Changed..." by a guy named Theo who I'd never heard of, but according to his website he's a guy who "builds things". Apps, presumably. I had nothing better to do (sleepless night...) and I enjoy a good Apple bashing, so I watched the video. In it, Theo...
