Caspian Tern looking for food in the San Diego River This May I set some big goals for my birthday month. Coming off of a fun experience at the 2026 San Diego Bird Festival, I decided to share my hobby with my friends and family. Most people know that I’m into birds to an almost comical level. But many people have...
IPA (India Pale...
Back in January, I released my first original visual novel, Little White Lies, in conjunction with Victor V. Gurbo. In this post, I announce my second visual novel, Under the Alien Sky, which you can download for free from Itch.io (https://itch.io/naferrell/under-the-alien-sky/). Early scene from Under the Alien...
I really, really think when feeling overwhelmed, it's a good idea to get out — a movie, hike, donut shop, library, museum, anything. Currently Listening: Beck “Pay No Mind (Snoozer)”Reply via email
I'm ready to grudgingly accept that the absolute market saturation of mattress retailers in America over the past 10 years isn't tied to money laundering, even though it's one of the few internet conspiracies that kind of, sort of, might possibly be true. I bought a mattress yesterday. First time in my life.
A day of surprises in Franconian Switzerland: From hobbit-like beer cellars and a Jewish cemetery to Greifenstein Castle. Despite chilly winds and forgotten jackets, the hike delivered cherries, panoramic views, and a historic steam locomotive. A perfect blend of history and nature.
My birthday is coming up, so I’ve been thinking about birthdays. For the past three years or so I’ve also had a “Casemas” holiday on my calendar for the third Wednesday of July, since I was born on the third Wednesday. I don’t remember quite what the conversation was, but noaks and I must’ve been discussing it at...

I’ve long been searching for a system to help me not just manage my digital collections, but actually use them meaningfully. At some point, I stumbled upon the [[https://johnnydecimal.com/][Johnny Decimal]] System - an approach that seemed logical and well-thought-out at first glance. Clear numbers, clear...

Maybe every writer hits a point in a project where everything feels useless, your efforts stale and stupid. Where any energy you have, period, falls away and leaves brain and heart, soul and...
(image courtesy of Cheryl Jowen) entry's soundtrack above ^^ i have always been one to guard things close to my chest. the sanctity of life, of everything i've been afforded, cherish, discover, possess; bony fingers wrap protectively around them, worn stuffed toys rising and falling with each measured breath. i just...
Flat and watery on the first pour, but the potential is right there under it
Given that Rogallo is coming on pretty well, I feel it's about time to get some sort of documentation for it going in Geminispace. With this in mind, I've created an account over on tilde.team so I can make use of their support for the Gemini protocol. While I don't imagine I'll be writing documentation as...
What, you thought all Ramen Science was going to be was following packet instructions? Please. This idea came to me yesterday as I was looking through our cupboards. I love Vegemite but I don't get many chances to have it in anything since I'm not the biggest fan of bread. Hang on, hang on, stop throwing tomatoes at...
What follows is a lengthy comment on the unscrupulous interests that benefit from the endless war in Ukraine as well as a critique of certain narratives about masculinity. Writing for UnHerd, Marta Havryshko comments on Why Ukrainian liberals love conscription. The process is brutally simple. Draft officers, often...
When you visit parts of the website of the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency in the U.K. outside of standard office hours, you will see this: It seems ridiculous, almost like the famous 500-mile email bug, but Dafydd Vaughan explains how it came to be. It won’t be a surprise that the story starts with an old...
[Equations in this post may not look right (or appear at all) in your RSS reader. Go to the original article to see them rendered properly.] Yesterday I watched the most recent Numberphile video, in which Ben Sparks explains a few finite series and the equations that simplify the calculation of their sums. He...
I've had enough of using my Android smartphone for casual snapshotting, I said to myself one day. I climbed to the attic and, after rummaging through boxes of stuff, unearthed an Olympus PEN Lite E-PL7 camera. I won it a lifetime ago when I participated in a photo competition held by Olympus Danmark. It wasn't the...
Like consciousness, like music, like love, life itself didn’t have to exist — nothing in the fundamental laws demands it. The universe could have gone on lapping at itself as a horizonless sea of pure spacetime, black and lifeless as the inside of a skull. But, in a whisper that soon became a symphony, life arose to...
2026-07-19Hello! For those just viewing on the internet: I managed to leak the entire publishing template of this newsletter to email subscribers, and I just have to deal with that circulating around now...Anyway! This is another monochrome image with swatches of dark gray across the image. Bits of sunlight in the...
There’s a line from Rutherford Craze’s latest note that hit me like a piano tumbling out of a six story building: When we ask Midjourney to draw an ox, it does not think of home. ChatGPT will never invent a new calligraphy technique, because it has no wrists to feel uncomfortable. That link points to Phaedra...

Another week of links from social.omgmog.net, 13 to 19 July. Two of Fabien Sanglard’s forensic engineering write-ups landed days apart, a new daily word game snuck into the morning coffee routine, and a share-menu tool I didn’t know I needed.
There have been a couple of things going on and projects that I've worked on since I published the last update post in April, so I guess it's time for another omnibus update!
My last little hint indicated I was tweaking the cogs in the proverbial Rube Goldberg machine that is this blog. As you no doubt surmised, after much hemming, hawing, and prognosticating to the Kuiper Belt and back — many of you know the endless battle I had with myself — I’m hanging my hat at a new home: Pure Blog....
On the edge of Prospect Heights at 736 Bergen Street sits a charming slate blue row house. Just two stories high with a top half-floor (based on some Zillow interior photos), the little Greek Revival-style relic features long slender windows, an ornamental front entrance, and a cornice with decorative moldings....
“What is the oldest thing you own?” For Thomas, who originally asked the question, it’s a Sisters of Mercy tour shirt from 1985. For Ruben, who brought it to my attention, it’s books from the 2000s. Apart from a small blue stuffed bear i’ve had since the day i was born, the oldest thing i’ve continuously owned might...
Record tasks in chronological order, do them when you’re truly ready Another week to match the last one: full of caring for little people, my grandbabies. Oh, the noise and delights and the detritus of young family life! My screen time is way down, in the nicest of ways. The Obsidian queries that run my plugin-free...
A new edition of the Internet Phone Book is in the works, and co-publishers Elliot Cost, and Kristoffer Tjalve (also a Tiny Awards organiser), recently spoke about the esteemed directory on the Wonders of Web Weaving podcast. There are a ton of podcasts out there, but I take time out to tune in to Wonders of Web...
OverviewThis one is landing Sunday instead of Friday. Friday got away from me, but the security news did not slow down while I caught up. The clearest pattern was pressure on the systems that concentrate trust: identity servers, SharePoint, security appliances, file-sharing controllers, developer pipelines,...
Life Notes Wednesday morning I took Jack to his swimming lesson. We enrolled him in a week-long course, and Becca has taken him so far, so it was wonderful to watch him actually listening and learning. He loves being active, loves being in the water, and he will need to be able to swim for next year as I have grand...
July 2026. Keighley. Well, a quiet night in Keighley Travelodge on Wednesday, quieter than the previous England World Cup Semi-Final, anyway. And then in the morning, as England celebrated qualifying for the Bronze medal match with their old enemy, Mrs RM sent me out to get photos of the Real Keighley. Actually, she...
Man, I am so tired of being tired. On the plus side I’m finally working on music again. Hopefully I can keep up a more sustainable momentum this time around, because I really do want to finish Misfits sometime this year. But I also don’t want to do my usual multi-month crunch that leaves me even more drained when I’m...
The Dave Kline Band with Senator Tim Kaine After Friday night's less-than-stellar experience, we tried again. Yep. It was a two-concert weekend for us. The day got off to a good start as I completed my first Bird Friendly Habitat Certification (not counting my own yard). So now we have two certified yards in...
After watching the documentary Michael a couple of weeks ago I was looking forward to see later part of his story. This documentary is exactly about that. It was fun to see the sentiments of the people about Michael at the time when he was so popular for his music. People were refusing to accept his misconducts....
This post is for this month Bearblog Carnival "An album that got me through a hard time". I have a lot albums that have helped me, because as I said before music is one of my pillars of life, and is hard to choose one. This is even harder to choose because I listen a lot of music and hard times aren't an exception,...
13th July - 19th July #SilentSunday Back in September last year, my faithful Kobo Nia died on me. I started a firmware update, fell asleep, and woke up to a boot-looping brick. I picked up my wife's ancient Kindle and have been limping through the last 11 months on that. I even wrote about e-ink being incredible...
Today was spent goat-proofing the automatic chicken door. We recently moved it to ground level and now the goats use it as a scratch post. 🐐 Thanks for reading this post via RSS. RSS is ace, and so are you. ❤️ You can reply to this post by email, or leave a comment.
Two villages that received only half their necessary annual budgets decide to wage it all on a soccer game between themselves. Whoever wins gets it all and fulfill their objectives. So everything becomes fair game in their quest to win. Knowing about the guy that wrote and directed the movie, I was expecting more...
