This past week I've been writing a lot, first the Walkman post and then my IR sensor project. I've gotten some really nice feedback on both; the Walkman post in particular seems to have resonated with a lot of people, which is interesting. I wasn't even sure if writing a post about it was worth it because it was...
I am back with Season 3, Part 2 of the Power User and Small Team track in my CybersecKyle Security How-To Series. This time we are making domain email harder to spoof with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, without turning DNS into a self-inflicted outage.Email is still one of the messiest trust systems we use every day.Your...
I guess i have a new hobby: going to a concert not to see the headliner. As Big Freedia cancelled her whole European tour, the Jazz à Vienne festival’s organizers scrambled to find a suitable replacement. Fortunately, the New Orleans Jazz Museum sponsored the creation of a new group comprising trumpeter James...
2026-07-09Hello! After a month, the headache of repair and replacement has concluded. This is my camera, returned to me. It hasn't been fixed. The repair costs proved to be more expensive than I could handle, and the camera could not be sold for parts or for any meaningful trade-in value. While at the camera store, it...
As an Indiekit supporter and user, I’m really appreciative of Paul for maintaining this open source project. After a short hiatus, he’s back to review pull requests and issues! I made a PR for some Markdown quality-of-life features and I’m so happy they’re merged and available in the latest v1.0.0 Beta 28. Hope...
Some time ago I resubscribed to Komoot Premium using some tricks to get it cheaper. But I don’t use Komoot to track my rides or even manage them there (OsmAnd is still my favorite app for that!); I just use it to plan them, especially on the PC. The biggest advantage: It suggests to me places I haven’t seen before,...
I don’t like talking about Nic Cage movies, because every time I do I get this nudge-nudge-wink-wink “yeah Cage is so great right?” thing where I know my conversation partner means no he’s actually not. Or they express their dislike and think I’m doing an “I like Nic Cage” thing for the bit. But no, I actually...
For context, I have gotten a lot of emails either asking why I deactivated my account or just sending me well wishes after the deactivation. This post is more for them than anyone else. If you don't care about random techbro website drama, feel free to skip. I had been tired of the site for a while. When I joined...
In the past, search engines and the open web granted access to other people’s knowledge but the task fell to you to synthesize an understanding from it and build a capability to act. Now with LLMs, it’s possible to build things you don’t fully understand which then require a perpetual license in order to have the...

Rachelle and I bought our house in Richmond in late 2022 and moved in early 2023. The ULTRALOQ U-Bolt Pro Z-Wave Smart Lock was the very first smart device I installed after setting up Home Assistant. Requirements # Our must-have requirements were the lock must work with Home Assistant, and it must have a...
Check out As in guillotine... for more. NOTE: Back in January, I put together Five Things from the “I was made for the library…” wing of the archives, and my trip to ALA a couple of weeks ago led to my writing two new articles that I’m really proud of, so this is basically a sequel. I love blogging, but professional...
What the fuck even is "Magical Insurance Bureaucrats" anyway? Compilation of a bunch of the art - this is my "tone piece" for the project more or less For a while now, I've been working on this thing called The Ongoing Adventures of Magical Insurance Bureaucrats in a World Recovering from a Failed Alien Invasion (a...
Detective Enola Holmes heads to Malta, where her aspirations merge in her most complex and dangerous case yet. While the movie has some pretty harsh ratings, I can see why. It’s not as witty and bubbly as the first two, but it makes up with good looking scenery and really good chemistry between the actors. After...
Interface designers must have the same maxim as doctors: primum non nocere Matt Gemmell Time after time we hear the same stories; companies shipping radical new UI that alienates stalwart users, "Google changed Gmail and now my mum can't find anything", MacOS Tahoe. While it's true that no-one ever got promoted for...
While this post is hidden from Bear Blog's discovery feed, it may still appear on your RSS feed and elsewhere. I guess that I should rewrite that one bleurgh (aka word vomit) post from my other blog. Why did I even spew out random words, only to hide them into obscurity like a deep cut in an artist's album from an...
This was the title of a post I’ve had stuck in draft for a while. It was also the post that got the most ‘votes’ to be written and published, which was handy for me as it was almost done anyway. Revisiting old drafts is always an education, I could see where I was going when I wrote the original draft, but I realise...
An op-ed about curiosity published in the New York Times yesterday will resonate with many philosophers. Angela Palmer, Self-Portrait (scans engraved on glass) Written by Anne-Laure Le Cunff, a neuroscientist at King’s College London, it uses the example of AI-generated answers to internet search queries as a launch...
Touch Grass went to the local bird sanctuary on Canada Day where, fittingly, I saw a lot of Canada geese and ducks, which followed us around when they saw we were carrying birdseed. (you’re allowed to feed the birds at the sanctuary.) I haven’t gotten around to looking at the digital photos I took, but eventually…...
July 2026. Sawley. Derbyshire. The pint of Abbot in Pub 5 was a mistake. I sensed a dash to the station and a return to the warm embrace of the Sang Lung was called for. But our last pub was just across from the trains, and I ought to save my casketeers a table in a place notably short on seating. I’d been in Sawley...
A pink symmetry on the peaceful pond catches my eye. “It’s a lotus!” I have made lotuses with paper before, but cannot remember the last time I saw one (have I noticed one before in the way I did today?). The vivid colours are striking: pink petals define the shape of the flower, with a yellow centre. “I can see why...
Yesterday at work something very weird happened. During our lunch break, the conversation focused on me, at least for a couple minutes. My group sat next to another coworker, she’s older in age than most of my group, from another generation that would often work more than the others unprompted and at the same time...
Heya! So, it's been a while since I've last talked about my guestbook website, guestbooks.kamiscorner.xyz. And while development has slowed down a tad due to me being fairly busy, I did still add a couple of fun features - Which I'll talk about in this post :3 Guestbook RSS FeedsFirst of all, every guestbook now has...
Usually our adventures are about cycling or hiking. This day was packed with historical sightseeing! Starting in the 11th century, we saw castles, gardens, palaces and impressive fountains ...

We break readily, when we’re flung into the scrap pits. We lie in quiet piles, legs twisted, arm actuators malfunctioning due to the ‘sleep paralysis’ protocol when we’re junked. But only the exterior breaks.Yes, our ceramic shells crack into shards, our crumple zones collapse, but our batteries typically survive,...
Ah, so you think I’m going to talk about the dance called Tango; but no, this time I’m going to talk about an album called “Tango”, by those two towering figures of Argentine rock, namely Charly García and Pedro Aznar. Now, you’re reading this and you’re probably asking yourself, why? As Simon Sinek once said, start...
Imagine you open your inbox one morning, and you are greeted by an email with a ginormous attachment. It contains hundreds of pages of written communications between members of a local theater group. A local theater group where a murder happened, and your boss thinks they arrested the wrong person. You are an...
I know software updates can be exhausting these days; on top of regular weariness of things changing, there’s contentious stuff like Liquid Glass, or thoughtless AI integrations. So, I’m curious: What is a recent software update, anywhere, that made you happy? Something that made an app genuinely better for you, or...
There is probably something you have been about to do for years. Not neglecting — preparing. Getting ready. Waiting until the timing is better, the savings deeper, the moment less exposed. You are not lazy about it; if anything you think about it constantly. It sits in the back of the day like a room you keep...
I saw this article at Inside Higher Ed this morning, guided by a Mastodon post from Techmeme. The title of the article is “Brown Professor Suspects Majority of His Class Used AI to Cheat,” so if you’re sick to death of reading about AI—pro, con, or caveated—don’t feel obligated to follow the link. I’m interested in...
I'm back home, back in Scotland, after a touch over a week in the Netherlands. It's been a great week. Much like on the flight out, from the aircraft, I managed to get a view of a part of the UK I like. This time it was Whitby. While likely not immediately obvious, it is there. It was a lot more obvious with the...
July 9, 2026 Well, that was one hell of a Fourth of July weekend. Friday evening, July 3rd, a thunderstorm blew through and knocked out our power and internet. A tree came down with it and took out the power line and internet line to the house, and blocked the driveway. The morning of the 4th was spent cutting up...
The other day I was listening to this episode of Decoder Ring where they talk about how bad modern sculptures tend to be because we no longer have the educational pipeline and infrastructure to produce professional level sculptors. We do have sculptors. We have a chunk of famous artists who work in 3D space. If you...
Earth is in danger! A giant meteor is going to crash into our planet, destroying all life. Luckily, the space-faring Atlantean civilisation is here to help. They used to be an ancient civilisation on Earth, thousands of years ago, before they developed spaceships and left to settle another planet. How are they going...

“In forty years of medical practice, I have found only two types of non-pharmaceutical ‘therapy’ to be vitally important for patients with chronic neurological diseases: music and gardens.” “I work like a gardener,” the great painter Joan Miró wrote in his meditation on the proper pace for creative work. It is...
For the present entry, I am picking a piece from the works of Lavrentis Maheritsas. Lavrentis was at his peak before modern audiovisual technology became the norm, which means that it is hard to find any of his songs rendered in high quality output. Compounding the problem, there are no excellent covers either,...
LineageOS now has a web installer. The project warns, however, that it doesn’t handle the entire process, and that you’ll still need to follow the instructions on your device’s wiki. Even so, it should make things considerably easier during those major yearly updates. In the same announcement, they report that work...
