May 2026. Sibiu. Central Romania. A couple of nights in one of Transylvania’s top tourist towns, which normally means you ensure you can visit all the best pubs. But in this case it meant we left the highly recommended St Andrews Scottish pub till the Monday, only to find it “closed !“, despite that wide open door...
I spent a good two-three hours wandering around the local reservoir with my daughter this afternoon and I think she may have become my wildlife lucky charm. She helped me spot a greater variety of wildlife than I'd seen on my last few solo visits, and she really loves to add more birds to her own lifetime...
This Saturday, we drove to Palakkad to meet Pradeep and Dhanya. It was a short morning walk and breakfast meet. We met at the fort, walked around, and chit-chatted while having breakfast at Indraprasta. The fort is well-maintained, and the walking path around the fort is good for a casual morning walk. Thanks to...
No, really. I'm sitting here reading about the Bath School disaster: Bath School disaster and I discover that the building was rigged with a bunch of dynamite and something called "pyrotol." I'd never heard of the latter, so I Wikipedia rabbit holed that too: Pyrotol Apparently, the US had so much of this stuff left...
You won’t find Hestia, a super-Earth planet, on any of the charts, for this is a body imagined by Kurzgesagt. But Hestia, on paper at least, is a super-Earth in more ways than one. No polar regions are present, ditto continents, though there are a multitude of medium size island land masses. The planet also sports...
That's what videogames are for, right? Driving around in the cars you can never afford? Racing like gas isn't 5 dollars a gallon? Where if you work in a pizza shop or cafe you actually make money? Where if you throw a rod into a pond you catch a fish? Where if you complete a quest you get rewarded?

Since the last time I posted here, I have another game out, UNLOCK & UNWIND. This is another collab with Fisher, a bloody action story about a cybernetically enhanced sadistic infiltrator and her mission to kill the Princess. It’s a short and fun VN, made for Daydrinking Jam. But, looking at the date… how we...
G.K. Chesterton was born on this day in 1874. Max Beerbohm first met him in 1902 and described him as 'like a mountain, and a volcanic one – constant stream of talk flowing down – paradoxes flung up into the air – very magnificent.' They became friends, and Beerbohm admired him – within limits: 'I am not nearly as...
Mark Murphy, currently professor and chair of philosophy at Georgetown University, will be moving to the University of Notre Dame. Professor Murphy is known for his work in moral philosophy, philosophy of law, and philosophy of religion. He is the author of God’s Own Ethics: Norms of Divine Action and the Argument...
I had the opportunity to participate in yet another edition of the Internet Forum in Brazil (FIB16), this time in the Amazon forest region, in Belém, Pará. The event, organized by NIC.br, brings together people from different sectors to debate hot and/or important topics related to the internet in the country. My...
The weather has been suspiciously good (albeit windy) lately, so I spent the last couple of days in CNL. Wednesday was pretty uneventful, and I spent most of it chatting with a fellow flight club member and digging through vintage aviation books (which the club has plenty of).
I've released v2.33.0 of BlogMore, which extends the stats page some more, and also adds a tool so a user can do all sorts of fun things with the raw data of their posts. The addition to the stats page is a list of years along with the top five words that characterise the focused subject for those years. This is...
Dear reader,Have you ever discovered software that makes sense from the moment you try it out? Something that becomes part of your workflow, and you can’t imagine going back in time. This happened to me when I tried the iA Writer after reading James’s thoughts on it . The reason this Markdown writing software spoke...
This interesting debut novel gripped me from the off with its "Virgin Suicides plus Carrie vibes". Rachel is an outsider in high school; mildly bullied but mostly ignored. A chance overhear of a death metal band plunges her into a world custom built for outcasts. The book spends its majority trucking through forming...
Drive-by AI changes break the shared model a team builds around its code, and the ICs end up cleaning up the mess. Why pushing to mainline should come with the pager.
“Come with me. I’ll teach you the flowers and the stars.” Beneath our anxious quickenings, beneath our fanged fears, beneath the rusted armors of conviction, tenderness is what we long for — tenderness to salve our bruising contact with reality, to warm us awake from the frozen stupor of near-living. Tenderness is...
I can’t recall what made me stumble across this old article from the Guardian —possibly my own blogpost about helping out Zoe as I designed her website back in 2005— but it was nice to reminisce about those heady days. As well designing the website for myboyfriendisatwat Zoe (honourable mention in her sidebar), I...
Isn't it crazy to think that after all this time on the blog, the college tag is finally going to retire? Every morning I wake up in my college apartment with the acute knowledge that my days here are numbered, finite, dwindling, whatever you want to call them. I went apartment hunting with my mother yesterday for...
In my recent post I wrote about my experiment with using Claude Opus to analyze my book history, quiz me about my own book preferences and then recommend my next book. As a result I started reading 2666 by Roberto Bolaño, so far only 80 pages in (my reading is squeezed into the last 30min of my day, and on many...
2026-05-29Hello!Whenever I go on walks with my camera, I sometimes feel that there's nothing interesting to photograph. Even if there is a scene of interest, I don't know how to capture it in one frame. In times like this, I turn around. I'm always looking forward and expecting something interesting to come up to me,...
lexingtonalarm.org via gillianbrockell.com Love to see it! A live map to track ICE flights to know when they could be coming to your city. Feels like an important thing to share so maybe go and do that.
A derivation that contentful verdicts cannot be seat-free, and that the only coherent residue of neutrality is declaration. Version: v2.4 Abstract A seat-free resolution of a question is one whose answer is fixed by the situation alone, with no contribution from any chosen standpoint. The intuition that such...
💡Read Religion, the Board Game (Second Edition) now!Would it be safe to say you have opinions on religion?Absolutely, but I try not to be overly vocal about it. Religions and belief systems are fascinating, but I struggle to understand them—or rather, to understand how people choose to behave within their...
[Equations in this post may not look right (or appear at all) in your RSS reader. Go to the original article to see them rendered properly.] I just learned that people are listening to music pitched slightly down because it makes them feel better. Instead of the A above middle C being set at 440 Hz, they have it...

Cross your fingers for me this weekend as I attempt a supposedly “easy” fix of the lid switch on our 26-year-old washing machine. I tried one super-simple tip involving zip ties that, sadly, did not fix our problem, but fully replacing the switch should hopefully fix it for a total cost of $8 (if you don’t count the...
OverviewThis week had a very practical theme: the boring systems that run websites, endpoints, identity, and developer workflows are still the easiest places for attackers to turn one weak spot into a larger incident. The loudest stories were not just new bugs. They were bugs and campaigns that gave attackers...
Went for another run this evening, was planning to do 3km again, but I felt good at the halfway point so I carried on. I ended up doing 5km and was hoping to do it in <35 mins. Imagine my surprise when I did it in 30:21! Well impressed, but I think I over did it and I'll be sore tomorrow. 🤣 Thanks for reading this...
I’ve just realized again how much I associate learning and memorizing things with movement. For example, I remember number combinations best when I picture a keypad and then mentally trace the movements I make with my fingers. The sense of direction, the stretching of the finger joints, the positioning of the...
Today is Friday, May 29, 2026. Because it is a day ending in -day that is not Saturday, it is time for our daily Pook-Emu Bee links. There will be no Pook-Emu Bee tomorrow, but you will find even more links in The Newsletter Leaf Journal. I usually do not publish links on Sunday, but maybe I will surprise everyone....
Regarding my last post: While I spent plenty of thoughts on the whole implementation, most of the coding work was actually done by DeepSeek V4 Flash and Pro, and I just supervised and criticized it. While I mainly used Amp Free in the last few months, Amp Free is dead. The daily free usage was cut to 5 dollars, and...

Everyone may be dunking on the Ferrari Luce, but I'm not sure it would have ended any other way.
I fear we may have lost a chicken from our flock yesterday, although there is no gore or collection of feathers to indicate a murder has taken place. Evidence is not always left behind after a crime, however. She is a sweet bird, gentle and timid, and likes to remain in the chicken run and away from the other birds...
