More unexpected Mario content: a 7-minute video speedrunning composite by FlibidyDibidy: This video combines my first 5,162 attempts to speedrun Super Mario Bros. I recorded 193 hours of attempts (and practice) on an original 1985 Nintendo Entertainment System, then I wrote a custom computer program to process those...
Today marks two significant (to me) anniversaries. Coburg parkrun - 16 May 2015 Eleven years ago today I was timekeeper at Coburg parkrun # 1. It was a big monment saying “go” and seeing about a hundred people head off together on Merri Creek Trail for the first time, but I had no big how big and important that...
I am rebranding my personal Week Notes series.I haven’t done a Week Notes post since the first week of December. There were a few times recently when I wanted to publish one again, but I knew that restarting it would also feel like committing myself to doing it every week again. I know I don’t have to. Plenty of...
One of the established power features of the curl command line tool is its support for “globbing”. It is a built-in way to specify ranges and sets in different ways and have curl iterate over them to simplify repeated transfers. For example, you can easily download three images from the same host without having to...
Thanks to my family for coming out this morning. It was fun sharing the birds with both the kids and adults. The indigo buntings and orioles were a big hit and it was really cool having the bald eagles to fly over for us. Even with the big group we still encountered 32 species! Also, thanks to my cousin Jude for...
Birding at Dorey Park It's difficult to photograph birds at all times; it's especially difficult when they mostly live in the leaves. I did get this one decent shot this morning of a brown thrasher. We saw 33 species, including my best-ever look at a Great Crested Flycatcher. There were two examining a potential...
If you search “the last duel in Canada,” you will find multiple sources citing the fatal duel between Robert Lyon and John Wilson in 1833. A duel so famous that the local town has a park named after it and a plaque from the Ontario Archeological and Historic Sites Board. It’s on a plaque. It must be true. Aside:...
Is Bitwarden preparing for a sale?by Jan-Lukas ElseJan-Lukas writes about the warning signs that Bitwarden might be heading for a private equity sale. The irony is that founder built Bitwarden because he didn't trust what happened when LastPass got acquired.Read post ➡I saw this on the fedi this morning and it made...
Supply chain attacks are a growing threat to software registries. One of the first major typosquatting attacks on npm took place in 2017 when the user "hacktask" published a series of packages with similar names to popular libraries (e.g. crossenv vs cross-env), misleading people into installing them. Then the first...
A super nice Saturday across town bopping about. +18 photosCurrently Listening: Arc De Soleil “Got Caught in Amsterdam”Reply via email
Most of the many “…was the name of my high school band” jokes I’ve made over the years were verbal and are lost to time, but some were here on my website or on social media. Since I’ve imported pretty much all of my social media posts onto my website, I realized the other day that it’d be pretty easy to find them...
April Intro April 2026, the month including The New Leaf Journal’s sixth birthday, is in the books. The end of the month means it is time for our month-end review. In this article, I review the month that was in The New Leaf Journal and related projects in April 2026. April at The New Leaf Journal I published 16 NLJ...
Cultural systems — religions, constitutions, philosophical traditions, ideological movements, scientific paradigms, informal cultural artifacts — share a structural property worth naming directly. Each maintains a relationship between a nominal core and an evolving operational practice. The relationship’s stability...
Spaced repetition has a natural domain of applicability: information that is systematically organized as an unambiguous key-value mapping with short keys and values. The “Hello, world!” of flashcards is the NATO phonetic alphabet: A → alpha, B → bravo, etc. Similarly, the periodic table can be thought of as defining...
Took this picture on our way home on Thursday. Hope it makes you smile as much as me!
To me, my sweetheart is a phenomenon. With two needles and an indefinite amount of wool in various colours, she whips up all sorts of little marvels at a speed that would take me just to get my fingers back in order. Most of the things she crochets are made for her children, or for the fund-raising efforts of the...
I'm sure it can't have escaped your attention that today is International Day of Light. I must admit it was passing me by until it got a mention on the radio this morning. I've no clear idea what it is – some kind of Unesco invention, it seems – but it gives me the perfect pretext to post again one of my favourite...
Readers of this blog probably know I have a very low opinion of generative AI -- a low opinion that seems to be shared by many many other folks. At least it's good to not be alone, even if every interaction we have with tech companies is meant to think this whole thing is inevitable.

I share a design I made for the May 2026 Inkscape Challenge and some general instructions on how to use the Seamless Pattern Template.
A continuation to this post. I decided I would get a used bike from a local bike shop. I talked to one of the employees there and he offered me some interesting options. I felt a bit more sure of myself, I had watched a lot of bike videos and at least knew what mechanical disc brakes were, for example. I was still...
Or that I thought about again. Or that I think are wondrous. Anyway, I wanted to share them with you here. • The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis • The concept of affordance...

Back when we did things like “buy a cd and use iTunes to turn the music into mp3s” I used MusicBrainz Picard a lot to get all the metadata I needed. And then I kind of forgot about MusicBrainz.Turns out: it is still going strong. It does lack quite a lot of the music I listen to, though. Which might not be so...
2026-05-16Hello! This article is written kinda like a vlogbrothers video: with a half-hearted attempt at pretending this is a journal meant for an audience of one specific person.I was sent a dare to take a picture of a plane. Not easy, given that the clouds were thick and I was under tree cover.(Okay, I might have...
“The perilous time for the most highly gifted is not youth… The perilous season is middle age, when a false wisdom tempts them to doubt the divine origin of the dreams of their youth…” “A self that goes on changing is a self that goes on living,” Virginia Woolf wrote in one of her characteristic asides of immense...

Aziraphale, now Supreme Archangel, seeks Crowley’s help as plans for the Second Coming take a surprising yet dangerous turn. I loved the idea of this TV series, but the finale turned sour pretty quick. Production value has decreased, and not even the combined powers and skills of David Tennant and Michael Sheen...
I did a nice thing for a stranger today. I'm not going to bother saying what it was, or give any details about the interaction beyond saying that it cost me zero dollars, just a few seconds of my time, but still made a tangible difference in that person's seemingly rough day. I'm not saying this to brag or boast,...
It's a never-ending cycle. I notice that I waste too much time scrolling on my smartphone. I reach a point where I want to change my behavior with long-lasting success. For some time I succeed to follow the rule I have set for myself to not waste 1 minute mindlessly doom-scrolling. The change in behavior focuses on...
Bad news about Bitwarden. Apparently their CEO changed, and everything looks like they are preparing for a sale. Bitwarden has also stopped listing “Inclusion” and “Transparency” as tentpole values on its careers page. On his LinkedIn page, Sullivan, Bitwarden’s new CEO, describes himself as having “robust...
In my work on Perfetto, a performance debugging tool, one question I get often is: “how do I split a Perfetto trace into multiple files?” Instead of answering directly, I say: “there isn’t an easy way to do that, but what’s leading you to collect traces large enough to want to split?” This is one of my golden rules...
I haven’t lost any weight—I’ll say that right off the bat. Or rather, I’ve lost just under 1 kg (~2.20 lbs). This public commitment I made to myself didn’t go as I’d hoped. I kept up with my swimming sessions, the occasional brisk walk through the traffic of the Neapolitan suburbs, and some home strength training,...
Well, this week didn't quite go according to plan, so I didn't get to test out the Steam Controller straight after it arrived. This afternoon, after messing about with code and agents for a few hours, I decided it was high time I stopped doing coding things (and to some extent day-job learning things) and instead...
Hi I was a dumb lizer whole day! I will share more photos when I get home, but it's been fun! Will cosplay bit more tomorrow and then it's trip back home. The character is my own sona. Yea its me
I've been thinking more about the future we might be heading towards if things continue the way they do, relatively unstopped, especially in regards to data harvesting and leaks, and how digitalized our society continues to become. I wonder if we are simply headed for a society in which there is bleak acceptance and...
May 2026. Whitby. Dave “US Dave” turned up just as Stafford Paul were contemplating the merits of the pubs across Whitby harbour. Slightly reduced merits these days in the Duke of York and the Board, as Whitby has gone full-on “small pub”. But our Wednesday was very “proper”, four pubs outside the GBG, starting at a...
Despite it being a good two years since I’ve made vim my only text editor again, I hadn’t really gotten deeper into using more terminal (or text-base) user interface (TUI) for a while. With Gemini I started reading gemtext, but that was mostly it. But then the tooi-client for Mastodon really became a game changer,...
