So a while back I wrote a post about zines. In that post I talked about how I felt that making a marketplace for zines would be too difficult to monetize. And by monetize I don't mean make me money but generate enough money to pay for its own hosting and upkeep costs. But to have like, some sort of online zine...

Sometime in 2021 I started jotting down my weight in Trilium. I wasn’t quite diligent about it but I did make that effort to log it down whenever I measured it. Looking back at it today, it’s interesting to see the consistent downward trend over the last five years. What’s more interesting is the sinusoidal peaks...
I was taken in by the cover–come on, look at it, how could I not? The blurb clinched it, even though it didn’t register on me at the time that the book is narrated in first person. Ah well; live and learn. Beware: references to a character with Alzheimer’s. Buried Above Ground, by Mike Ripley Despite generally...
On Letterboxd, if you pay for the top subscription you can choose the poster that shows up when people read your review. I was browsing through Letterboxd one day when I found a very strange poster for a movie. I performed a reverse image search and found this very delightful piece of movie history. For some reason,...
The job is finally done. After considering moving all the images in the blog over to WebP, and then finally getting the migration under way, I'm all done. As I mentioned before: I've done this by hand, one post at a time, also adding missing covers as I go. The process went faster than I anticipated and I found that...
The following exchange popped up in the teacher group chat just now: First Year Teacher: I have several seniors absent. Do I mark them as present? I know today is Senior Skip Day. Principal: You mark them absent. Senior Skip Day is not on the calendar. An unexcused absence? That's it? I went through high school in...
May 15, 2026 Monday I noticed an itchy spot on my upper back. By Tuesday, there was a hard bump where I’d been scratching it. Wednesday it was still itchy, and because of the bump I had Lisa take a look at it. Turns out it was a tick bite. It also had a red circle around it a little bigger than a quarter. I knew...
threads.com via instagram.com I try not to link to Threads (or the MLB for that matter), but these photos that play on the lines from the Rule of Thirds are just too damn good not to share.
The mid-May Weather here has been unseasonally cold, with sudden violent showers of rain and hail. The swifts have withdrawn to await better things; only the doughtiest butterflies – holly blues (amazingly abundant this year) and speckled woods – are showing themselves, in the rare moments of relative warmth; and...
The other day, my youngest brought a self-made journal home from school. Their teacher assigned the class the task of drawing some pages about how they imagine the future. Simon...
I set out to write about bitterness in olive oil and was caught off guard by some interesting facts about the compounds that create the flavour and, sometimes, full-bodied experience of tasting a good olive oil. I recently had a chance to taste three different olive oils from three different regions, thanks to the...
“Attention is an intentional, unapologetic discriminator. It asks what is relevant right now, and gears us up to notice only that.” “How we spend our days,” Annie Dillard wrote in her timelessly beautiful meditation on presence over productivity, “is, of course, how we spend our lives.” And nowhere do we fail at the...
The best thing that happened this week This will be a long update because quite a few things happened! The best thing that happened this week is that I made another side project public this week. I created a thing that takes an RSS feed, goes through each link in the feed, downloads the article, and generates a new...
I just ordered my first album ever. Actually I bought two, since the shipping was so expensive. Both CDs are signed, with one of the albums being released just today. I have many times wanted to own my music, instead of paying the exexorbitant spotify monthly fee. However, everytime I remember that no, I wont save...
László Polgár’s experiment worked. That’s the problem. He raised three daughters to be chess grandmasters through intensive early specialization, and all three became exceptional players. Judit became the strongest female chess player in history. At 15 years and 4 months, she broke Bobby Fischer’s record to become...
Before we get to anything else in this post, I’m asking you to open up a new tab—better yet, a whole new window—and put Lucy Bellwood’s extraordinary comic The Scale of a Man in it. Don’t read it while you’re distracted. Set aside a few dedicated minutes. Come back to it when you’re ready for drawings of a model...
I just read an article by Abhijit A.M. in The Anvil journal. Its title is The Decline of the Copyleft Free Software Movement and Its Ideological Limitations. It is subtitled A Marxist Critique of the Free Software Movement. It makes several interesting points about the state of free software and the role of the open...
By: Artem Chapeye | Rating: 5/5A very thoughtful book. The perspective of the philosopher at war, and the choices he needed to make is incredibly valuable. His writing hits very close to home, as he brings up scenarios and choices that led him to volunteer for the Ukrainian army. Highly recommended reading for...

2026-05-15Back at a film red carpet event...Hello!I know comparison is the thief of joy, but I've seen the other photographers upload their shots from the same event and the same point of view. This is a case where almost everything is exactly the same, and the major differences come to the skill and vision of the...
After two missed days due to having many work assignments, I return with a new edition of my Pook-Emu Bee links. Of course, there are no Pook-Emu Bee links tomorrow because of the newsletter and Sunday is hit and miss, so I encourage you to thoroughly enjoy today’s links. 1. Microsoft BitLocker-protected drives can...
So I recently upgraded my home internet to full fibre, after which I also decided to upgrade my router as there were some things I wanted to do with my network that my ISP-provided router wasn't capable of. I replaced my mesh system with a UniFi one a couple years ago, so it made sense to stick with the UniFi brand...
So I've been pondering (sometimes heavily) a blog post. It's been in my mind for days, and it's been bugging me for days because it's not something that I know what to write on, per se. The idea popped into my head just now, and I sat staring into a cloud outside pondering what to write when I realised that I could...
I've been able to go to the gym more consistently lately, and I've started using the strength machines too, instead of just using the treadmill. Usually my workouts consisted of the treadmill, my indoor cycle, pilates and yoga, but I wanted more, especially after this year has been more difficult with consistency...
The first time I heard about Passkeys I was about to email one of my dashingly swoon worthy friends. In this case it was Sean Crisden. I was about to detail the intricate specific joy of crunching down on a slice of freshly baked Apple Pie when my phone dinged. "Hey," my friend said, "since you're a tech person,...
May 2026. Whitby. I’d told Mrs RM if she was ready to leave for Whitby at 6am that Wednesday morning I’d take her along. I even threw in the prospect of a campervan overnighter opposite Loftus Police Station, where I parked up, alone, at 9am. Ten minutes later I was on the X4, a picturesque 41 minute meander around...
When the Mind Stops Updating mtift Fri, 05/15/2026 - 08:14 There’s a new large language model (LLM) on the block, and it got me thinking about why I practice meditation. The model is called Talkie, and it’s not like the other models. Talkie is a 13-billion-parameter (i.e. “small”) model, trained on 260 billion tokens...
The end is coming soon ─ not what you think ─ But maybe worse ─ we stand upon the brink Of Armageddon's armies ─ the final clash When all will turn to lead and dust and ash. Both earth below and heavens above will burn; All evil, gone, for Jesus will appear. We pray and watch the skies for his return, The righteous...
We are in Thrissur. We left at around 2 AM and reached by 11 AM, with two breaks. The drive was comfortable. The traffic was friendly this time. Echo is getting old, and Uma is more active now. So the breaks are a necessity now. Thrissur is hot, but it’s been raining since we arrived, which keeps it manageable. Uma,...
On a recent training camp trip to Mallorca, one of the other traveling athletes was a photographer. She took her gear with her and I was allowed to use it some days, just to try it out. After a day of taking shots, I was hooked. Hooked in a way of quitting photography again at some point? Maybe. But also hooked...
While Elon's purchase of Twitter did knock me off the platform for a bit, I returned for bad political takes, mediocre housing takes, good energy takes, and a surfeit of memes. A post recently caught my eye showing off a rigged word search. I wanted to make my own, so I quickly built a generator.
Sometimes the national anthem at high school track meets can be a bit painful to listen to, but we were fortunate to hear a fantastic one by a high school junior this week. I must say the effects at Harry Potter and the Cursed Child were fantastic. The play was good for those of us who are steeped in the lore. I...
Spend enough time with Love Hultén's work and you start to feel like you're mapping an alternate world — one built from wood, electronics, and a very particular kind of whimsy.
Another pre-gig dispatchWhile browsing the IndieWeb wiki looking for /now page examples the other day, I came across Max Dietrich's now page, which has a section that displays his current location and the weather there. I wanted to add something similar to mine. After a bit of research, I found out that the best way...
