You’ve probably heard you should take magnesium. This guide explains what it does, whether you need it, and how to make a sensible choice — rather than just buying whatever’s at the pharmacy. The Short Version For most reasonably healthy adults who eat a typical Western diet and want better sleep or general...
A pattern I keep stumbling upon: start with the gentlest (softest?) action, then escalate only when it didn’t properly go through: Killing processes. Start with SIGINT. Then SIGTERM. Finally SIGKILL. murder(1) encapsulates that. ArgoCD syncing. Start with a normal sync. Then sync with server-side apply. Next, sync...
May 2026. Sheffield. A rare Saturday in Sheffield, and a designated “dry” day, which is quite an effort in my hometown. On a whim, I thought “about time I went to Bramall Lane“, and was a bit miffed to see the Cricketers Arms opposite the ground closed on match day. I took an aimless stroll round semi-industrial...
Power is owned, strength is used. Power can be inherited, but strength cannot. Strength is something you have to show and display repeatedly when the situation demands it. To see the use of strength is evidence enough that a person deserves our respect. To see power is evidence of nothing, because we don't know what...
American journalist Kelsey Piper, writing at The Argument: But soon, the entire debate over internet anonymity will be as anachronistic as an iPod Touch. That’s because Claude Opus 4.7 is here, and last week, I discovered it could identify me from text I had never published, text from when I was in high school, text...
A federal court judge ruled today that Texas State University must reinstate philosopher Idris Robinson, whom the university fired from his assistant professorship over a talk he gave about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Robinson had sued the university in March. A press release from Texas State Employees Union...
When I think something is bad, immoral, unethical, harmful, evil - or whatever may apply - I neither do it in private or in public. I don’t just adhere to this rule of not doing it when I’m by myself, I also don’t do it when I’m with others, regardless of whether they might do that thing and would think it’s more...
Antecedently: A whole grip of grapplin’; the latest hit from Supergiant Games; ambiguously-sized wasps in an unknowably-sized wasphaus (Fair warning to the reader, this entire session—and so this post—was literally just this one fight, and as much as we try to mix it up it does basically boil down to ‘they punched a...
I rarely watch anime anymore, except for the occasional movie. However, as mentioned in one of my weeknotes from last month, I occasionally get bouts of nostalgia for shows that I watched in the past. The most recent one is Shin Sekai Yori, or From the New World. I've watched the anime series twice, and also read...
In november 2025 I went to Gamescon, which is a convention in Serbia that’s all about games, cosplaying, et cetera. This is relevant because I made myself 3 badges there because I won some kind of competition. I gave one to a friend, and left 2 in my bag. I didn’t think much of it, until I started yearning for...
For Internet-facing applications it's advisable to run Java server applications in a restricted sandbox. Can we do that, at least in part, without the overheads of Docker and the like?
This article was originally drafted in 2024 but I struggled to finish it then. I was stuck wondering if I was just moaning over the past. Recently, Salma and Jo both shared thoughts that gave me the rage and energy to come back to this. Today is the day I finally have the courage to publish. I can’t recall how many...

Jpn J Ophthalmol (2026). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10384-026-01371-y I’m including a table of all the abbreviations below. I re-read the article using a reference like this...

Do I just keep numbering these? Do I call them something better than links? Findings sounds nicer. So what have I seen this time? Teresa Watts has been sharing her art. I enjoyed Shopping – it’s warm and glows, the light makes these everyday objects feel very special and sentimental. The sketch for this piece is in...
Contentment with Markdown mtift Mon, 05/11/2026 - 15:33 If one tool can make the work look more exciting, why choose a different tool that makes the work look basic?Last week, Thariq Shihipar, who works on Claude Code at Anthropic, shared an article about HTML artifacts with some nice-looking examples. He shows what...

I’ve been a Tailscale user for almost five years. Today, I stumbled across NetBird again and largely replaced Tailscale with it. Why? For one, the reverse proxy feature: Setting up public services is much easier with it compared to Tailscale Funnel. It lets you use a custom domain or even multiple ones. It’s much...
For a really long time I was using the same setup for development. Basically a macbook and Sublime text. Then using DDEV for Craft CMS sites, and Laravel Herd for Kirby or general PHP/static sites. But things started to change when I dove into Omarchy late summer 2025. I really started to play with the idea of...
A lone port 22, wide open, accepting every password. 269,000 connections, 7,556 unique IPs, and a few visitors who thought they’d hit the jackpot.
Today I completed a job that I’ve had on my list for a few weeks. The specifics of the job —fixing the broken grey waste pipe on our motorhome— aren’t what matters. As ever, I prepped, researched, bought some bits I thought I might need and when I finally got around to actually looking at […]Thanks for reading and...
Since May 8th, Instagram stopped offering the option of direct messages (DMs) with end-to-end encryption (e2ee). The announcement was made quietly on a page in Meta’s help documentation, which reflects the importance of this feature within Instagram — close to zero. In reporting the news, however, the media did a...
Every email address in existence. And every non-existing email address, probably, gets spammed. If it was possible to die from too much digital spam, we would probably have a lot less people on Earth.
A browser that decrypts your full saved-password vault at launch and leaves it in process memory is not delivering secure convenience. It is widening the blast radius after compromise, and calling that by design does not make it a good design. Last week’s reporting from Malwarebytes, SANS Internet Storm Center, and...
A review of the book "Atomic Habits" by James Clear, exploring the principles of habit formation. It helped me move toward the person I want to become.
Yesterday I was thinking about all the stuff that has lately been happening in my life and a lot of mixed feelings went all out to the point I started crying just because. Not sure if this is something that happens to everyone, but there are moments in your life where all the winds start to go south and out of...
A fascinating 25-minute video from Mark Brown at Game Maker’s Toolkit about how the team building Grand Theft Auto 3 conquered the technical limitations of PlayStation 2: How do you squeeze a city that occupies over 50 megabytes into the 32MB memory of the console? You simply do what The Truman Show did, and...
Here’s how to make your post as hard to read as possible. Step 1: Make it all one paragraph, the longer the better. Step 2: Don’t put in any subheadings. If you’ve followed step 1, you won’t be able to do this anyway. Step 3: Resist the urge to reformat some sentences as bulleted lists. Keep those sentences nice and...
Shortly before an election, a spin-doctor and a Hollywood producer join efforts to fabricate a war in order to cover up a Presidential sex scandal. I never thought a political movie can be so fun. Showing how the government spins story in order to distract the population from various things and have them focus on...
Hey you, start communicating!by David JamiesonDavid talks about why it's good to reach out to authors when you read their content. Even if it's just to say hi.Read post ➡Hard agree with David's comments here - he and I regularly exchange emails, actually. I try to reach out to authors whenever I read something that...
Why are we hereA while back I found myself having an irritating problem. I was reverse engineering an IP camera and wanted to modify its filesystem. Easy - you just desolder the BGA NAND, read it out, patch and write it back - right?Well, not when there's a difference in the ECC depending on whether a page has been...
“The miracle is that we rise again out of suffering… The miracle is that we create ourselves anew.” We spend our lives trying to anchor our transience in some illusion of permanence and stability. We lay plans, we make vows, we backbone the flow of uncertainty with habits and routines that lull us with the...
I mentioned last week that some wording in a news article struck me as odd. A similar thing happened when I read this Scientific American piece (that’s an Apple News link—I don’t have a SciAm subscription). In this case, I didn’t even have to read the article; the oddity is right there in the headline: “A SpaceX...
What have I been upto? Work has ramped up a lot (I’ve been booked up for May, and it’s likely I’ll be booked up for most of June), meaning some projects have fallen by the wayside a bit. The client in a field I like in the last update has ghosted me (seriously why do people ghost? We had a phone call and...
In a distant land lives a peaceful man called Phantes. His house is nice and cosy. It was built by a gifted fellow before Phantes was around. Nobody knows for sure who that person is. Whispers echo in the night. Birds sing of a peerless hunter. Mist permanently covers a part of the forest. Not even the wind blows in...

May 11, 2026 I installed Hyperduck by Sindre Sorhus on my iPhone and Mac back in February 2023. I don’t think I’ve used it once since then. This morning an update for the iOS app reminded me it was even installed. I had honestly forgotten what it does. Hyperduck is a small utility that sends links from your iPhone...
One of my favourite bloggers, Kev, did Hyde’s Over/Under interview! I knew Kev loves animals but I didn’t know he had so much fish as well! Kev is the creator of #100DaysToOffload in case you didn’t know. 😉 [For up-to-date content, visit BurgeonLab directly (XML feeds don't fetch updates in real-time). For...
I should start by saying that Kagi is a paid product. For those who want to look at what other search engines are out there, Startpage and DuckDuckGo both offer great services free of charge. Why pay for search? As the oft-repeated adage goes: "if you're not paying for the product, you are the product". We all know...
One of the things I have been really enjoying during my career break is learning to tackle cryptic crosswords. I am still not very good at them, but I can solve clues today that were dark to me a year ago, and that’s pleasing progress. I was delighted to see that the authors of the Minute Cryptic book I mentioned on...
I don't think it is very hard to predict the exponential rise of INT in large LLMs in the near future, but what about on prem local models and their rise? Every day I am seeing reports of people able to run decent models on their own M4 or dual card windows rigs. Models up to 27B on airplanes, when does this become...
John Sloan was a Village resident and something of a voyeur in the early 1900s, discreetly watching from his window or walking nearby streets in search of scenes to commit to canvas. He never lacked material, finding inspiration in the ordinary: a woman hanging laundry, men drinking in McSorley’s saloon, the...
It has arrived! I feel that Valve have upped their presentation game a little. Even the box feels quality; I don't remember my Steam Deck turning up in such a nice box. I might give it a go tonight. I probably should. On the other hand there's some coding I want to mess with so I have competing desires! The plan, at...
2026-05-11Hello! First, a technical note: for people who choose to disable JavaScript, for security reasons or limited internet, I've made some useful changes to maintain functionality. If you don't know what any of that means, don't worry, it doesn't affect you. To the folks reading on the web or through RSS feeds:...
