Species goal met! I was a little worried when I arrived at the Tijuana River Estuary because there wasn’t much activity going on. I heard and saw the Savana Sparrows. I heard and eventually saw the Ridgeway Rail. But there wasn’t much else for a while. I finally caught a glimpse of the Northern Harrier and found a...
2026-05-09Hello!This fancy steakhouse had outdoor seating, with decorative flowers and a US flag. I know that neighborhoods such as Little Italy exist, but I wonder what a Little America would look like — immigrants from the US migrating to another country and settling in a neighborhood. As a country, the US is...
Today, I attended a protest for the visibility of ME/CFS sufferers. ME/CFS is short for Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome; it is a chronic illness characterized by extreme fatigue that doesn't improve with rest, along with sleep issues, dizziness, muscle and joint pain, cognitive difficulties,...
Ok, that's it. I'm officially off GitHub. First I moved all of my private repos to my Synology, which was extremely easy to do. I did that around a week or so ago and it's be working great. Then I had to start sorting and moving all my public repos to Codeberg. Many were archived as I no longer maintained the...
Well, it's finally here. The second Mortal Kombat of the Cole Young saga has been released. And just like the video game of the same name, it's a major improvement over the first installment. // General Review One thing I appreciate about this movie is that it doesn't even warm up; there's a brief introduction and...
April 2026. London. I’d never been to the Museum of the Home at Hoxton Station (blue M at the red dot), not sure I’d ever heard of it. Standing proud in old almshouses on the A10 next to the famous Vietmamese cafés, close to the cultural melting pot of Hoxton Street. Worth coming just for the smell from the...
S. told me to ask for what I want, to take care of myself. I told her: “I think I only really know how to suffer, lol.” It’s been a recurring thought, that I don’t know how to have things, I only know how to want them.
I have been writing more and more Hare over the past year and finding places where the ecosystem still has gaps worth filling. One of those gaps is messaging. NATS is my go-to for lightweight pub/sub and I have used it in production across a handful of projects, so building a native Hare client felt like a natural...
I must have first read this when I was about ten and didn't think of it again until a few weeks ago when my brother mentioned "The Warlock of Firetop Mountain" and I asked: what was that book about the psychic children on a road trip that had a title like that?? I was duly reminded of the title and that you should...
Pre-script: I've got a podcast episode out with Ed Zitron available here. It has been a year and a half since I quit my job to start a consultancy. It took me years to build up to quitting, and I had not only a chip on my shoulder, but to quote Seth Sentry, “the guac and the dip and the salsa.” The people that read...

Anthropic’s latest Chrome extension issue deserves more attention than a quick “vendor patched a bug” headline. As CyberScoop reported, researchers say Claude’s browser extension could be hijacked by another extension, including one with no special permissions. That is not a small bug. That is a warning shot. The...
Scotland has a good population of native red squirrels. The rest of the UK is all but bereft of them, with the grey having overthrown them in their own habitat. Scotland, is developing pockets of reds, as the greys approach. However, where I live we are lucky to have a vibrant community of reds. This video is one of...
I review Krita tools used for pixel art, along with my workspace, keybindings to turn off, and settings that can help make it easier.
In this 30-minute video I expound on the close connection between deep thought and misery. I do so by explaining the symbolism of Hades, the Greek god of the underworld, the world of disembodied souls. Hades is also known as “Plouton”, from the Greek word for “wealth”, which points to a connection between the...
Configuration bankruptcy is someting of a meme in the Emacs community, to the point where there is a dedicated wiki page describing the phenomenon. As a fully-programmable text editor, Emacs configuration tends toward spaghetti over time, at least for many users (including myself). And for many of us, the only...
I have a confession to make. I prefer Apple TV’s 2015 remote: The remote was universally ridiculed for its “which way is up?” problem – too much vertical symmetry which didn’t give your hand enough cues to know whether you’re picking it up the right way or the wrong way. Apple tried a half-measure first; in 2017...
At some point this morning I was looking for something on this blog and stumbled on a post that had a broken link. Not an external link, but an internal link. This got me thinking: perhaps I should add some sort of linting tool to BlogMore? I figured this should be doable using much of the existing code: pretty much...
Religion and the Right to Be Left Alone – Avatans Kumar: Some of these faiths teach that spiritual experiences transcend sectarian boundaries and aren’t limited to one faith. Key Hindu beliefs illustrate this idea: Hinduism holds that many paths access one underlying Truth. The Rig Veda, Hinduism’s oldest text,...
A few thoughts about a good sticker and a good catchphrase: For the NHS, by the NHS.
If you truly believe in your product, you will spruce it up. Make it look nice. For me, generated "AI" icons and codebase just smells of insecurity and not believing in your own product. Why would I trust your product, if you're so insecure about it? Why should I use it, if you do not trust your own skills to create...

Triadic care is not being deployed into medicine. It is being deployed into the definition of medicine — and the two are not the same intervention, on the same timeline, with the same remedies. Here is the scenario that closes the governance window: a physician working a rural urgent care shift sees a patient with...
I am currently trying to figure out and sort through which traits are inherent to my brain’s structure (which I cannot change or only to a limited extend) and which...
There’s something I’ve been trying to grapple with for a while. It’s become more insistent with the rise of AI, but it actually predates that. And for me, it crystallised with the new openSUSE Terms of Site. For those unfamiliar, openSUSE is a flavour of the Linux operating system. It’s part of a pantheon of Free...
I like to capture ideas for posts as there are so many that flitter through my brain. I’m prompted by what I read on a blog, or in an article, or by something that someone mentions in passing, or a random life event. I have 34 drafts, 34 posts started with a few paragraphs and […]Thanks for reading and keeping RSS...
txtar is a tiny plain-text archive format Russ Cox introduced in 2018 for multi-file test fixtures. The Go Playground, cmd/go's script tests, gopls's marker tests, and rsc.io/rf all reach for it.

This was written for this month's Bearblog Carnival. Thanks to Kami for hosting this event! Gregg shorthand may be an obsolete writing system today, but it was among the important subjects that I learned in my office administration course. As one of my professors said, it was intended to be used for legal and...
when i first bought my laptop i wanted something powerful that could do it all. the only computer i had my hands on was the family laptop at the time and i was only able to play light indie games on it. so i wanted the most powerful laptop that i could buy for the least amount of money. i settled on buying a laptop...
On Fedi, Reverse wrote: On the 6th of May, the Swedish Parliament decided to accept a new law that is supposed to “strengthen competition”, via harder punishments on public companies that compete “unhealthily” with private companies This has been widely (and jubilantly) reported by various media operated by Svenskt...
What with one thing and another, I missed the release of this book–and I had so been looking forward to it! So in the spirit of ‘better late than never’, here are my thoughts. Beware: drinking; rape; suicide; serious burning; hospital scenes; institutional/systemic abuse and complicity. Fire Must Burn, by Allison...
