In the course of writing my butterfly book, I spent some time seeking out butterfly-themed poems (the best of them are Emily Dickinson's butterfly poems, and Janet Lewis's 'The Insect', which you can find here, after the snails). A name that did not come my way was Thomas Haynes Bayly (1797-1839), author of a...
In my ever-increasing desire to use emacs as my sole computing environment, I have started to take browsing the web inside it far more seriously. Where I previously had thought EWW to be a niceity but far from capable, after using it for a few days it seems to be useable for about 85-90% of use cases - even on the...
There’s one thing I wish you all could understand. The way Apple, Alphabet, Meta and Amazon owns the world? It doesn’t have to be that way. It used to not be that way. Their ascendancy should’ve been illegal. I was on the FOSS bandwagon before those companies took over the world. I belatedly fell off it and drank...
But it was probably never gone. Small personal websites are starting to pop up again, and people are starting to see the value of hosting your own site or blog somewhere outside the big tech platforms. Excellent. There are some nice initiatives going around resurrecting the old RSS feeds, and aggregating those small...
AutoDescriptor: Added page description via AutoDescriptor bot [[File:Screenshot - Lagrange view of Gemini version of this Wiki.png|thumb|Somewhat more textual than the HTTP version]] Recently, I've been thinking about [[wikipedia:Gemini (protocol)|the Gemini protocol]] and how it allows for text-based web pages and...
Did you know that the Apple HomePod can recognize alarms in your home and alert you about them? We discovered this a few weeks ago while we were vacationing in Phoenix. While relaxing in the sun, every member of our household received an alert on their phones. I cannot remember exactly what it said, but it was in...
I have contributed to other people's creative projects before. Back then, I would join art collabs within walled gardens (especially Instagram and Discord) and strive to finish my entries on time. Although I enjoy collaborating with other artists there, I feel that I should branch out from my siloed experiences and...

When back in the fifties, Louse Bogan “asked a group of students, recently, to name some definite bodily rhythm which might illustrate mankind’s sense of time, and with which a definite pleasure might be said...

This is a gross thing to admit, but up until recently, I was never someone who brushed my teeth regularly. I probably only still have teeth due to having really good teeth genes. There were years of my life that I couldn’t tell you how recently I’d brushed my teeth, and I’m sure it didn’t do me any favors when...
Quoted Installing Android on the Nintendo Switch by Max Glenister (blog.omgmog.net) Installing Android on it turned out to be fairly well-documented. There are a few different options for the Switch - the Switchroot project maintains Android 10 and 11 builds alongside Linux images (Ubuntu, Fedora), and LineageOS now...
This past few months (maybe even years) have been reset after reset after reset for me. I don't at all have to stretch my imagination to find poetic parallels between this spring season, moving apartments, turbulence at work, or the landslide evacuation of a neo-fascist regime from the helm of a captured state. Over...
<-- Building a PVR for a HDMI output I settled on an EZCOO 1 x In, 2 x Out 4k 60Hz HDMI splitter. The Amazon reviews confirmed that this splitter was capable of splitting a Sky Q output. Therefore, it should also be capable of splitting the output from my Sky Stream box. This is what some of us do in the UK: split...

Wait, what? Just a couple months ago, I did an early review of Zotero 8. I updated my computer today and see Zotero 9 is out?
13th April - 19th April I always feel like Autumn is my jam because I'm all goth and shit but I do love Spring. I think the shift has happened now I'm back in the countryside; syncing with the rhythms of nature and bonding with the Earth. Or something. Anyway… The forget-me-nots from the wood have spread into my...

Making an effort to remember there was some joy that was had. Even if just a little.
Over on Bear Blog, Thereabouts posted “The greatest breakfast food in existence”. When I read the title, my face lit up. “A blog post about breakfast food!” It got me thinking about what breakfast brings me the most joy. I think the answer is waffles and coffee. This time around two years ago, The Tortured Poets...
The camp snap pro I have a new camera friend. It’s the camp snap pro and I love it. Like their regular camera, this one gives the feeling of film photography to me, you snap and only when you attach the camera to your phone, you see the pictures taken. This beauty comes with four built in filters and surprisingly, I...
Do *you* understand ISO? A very good question, turns out the answer is no. Via Tom MacWright. A Class Apart on Axis, interviews with working class artists. Art By Amber Williams, beautiful collages made using security patterns from the inside of envelopes. And a Flickr collection of said security patterns. It has...
When you think of Gilded Age millionaires, the name Darius Ogden Mills probably draws a blank. Born in 1825 in Westchester, Mills based himself in Buffalo and California and made a fortune in banking and railroads. He got his modest start in business as a teenage clerk in Manhattan. Perhaps he remembered throughout...
I was always curious but very confused by IPv6. As a successful attempt to procrastinate a mountain of other “more important” things, I watched a few videos to understand it better, both in terms of its usage and its functioning, but also the politics of it. Wow, it is a much bigger deal than it seems to be from the...
The other fun project of the weekend was another kind of beast: I wanted to be able to listen system output from specific RPG programs running on our AS400 The idea was the following: could I generate a graph from dependencies used when X or Y RPG routine run? I wanted to be able to map physical programs from...
I enjoy repairing typewriters, but the Olivetti Lettera 36 tested my patience. It’s what’s commonly referred to as an “electric typewriter”, but should really be called an “electro-mechanical typewriter”. From the outside, it looks like a mechanical typewriter, down to the type bars and ribbon. From the inside, it’s...
It was a dry, dead patch of landWhere even the pebbles shriveledBeneath the scorching sunBut you said we could make it growAnything, something, everything You said it wouldn’t be too hardTo dig a well, and carve a canalTo install vapor towers and solar shieldsOn our hands, blisters formed and burst In mockery of...
In the early 2000’s, my parents took us on a road trip to Glacier National Park in Montana. We made the journey in our new (used) family van: a green Dodge Caravan whose reputation was soon to become “a lemon”. I was a teenager and didn’t pay a lot of attention to the details of what was happening around me, but I...
Nesting queries inside collapsible callouts, plus custom colours and icons It’s true that plain text can be beautiful when it is boring in all the right ways, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun. Let’s take a look at an unashamedly Obsidian-only tweak I’ve been playing around with for the task lists...
Did you catch one interesting bit in the last post? The undo shortcut in Paint and other apps in Windows 1.0 used to be Shift+Esc: This reminded me that the classic Ctrl+Alt+Del shortcut was initially Ctrl+Alt+Esc. Except, people apparently invoked it a bit too often by accident, so it was split to require two hands...
If something stinks, I'm your "man". I can smell incoming sickness1, the compost a day or two before it needs to go out, when someone has recently been in a room. Winter has a scent too2, and so does tap water, depending on how it's been treated. My dad jokes that my nose is big on the inside. Nobody else in my...
I wished the circumstances were different for visiting Prince's home and studios. Instead, it was a bit of a pilgrimage. + many photosCurrently Listening: Prince “Paisley Park”Reply via email
“Tone your wants and tastes low down enough, and make much of negatives, and of mere daylight and the skies.” “Do you need a prod?” the poet Mary Oliver asked in her sublime meditation on living with maximal aliveness. “Do you need a little darkness to get you going?” A paralytic prod descended upon Walt Whitman...
KACHOW WHAT’S POPPIN’ FELLOW LOVERS AND FIGHTERS AND HOPE-CANDLE LIGHTERS, IT’S YA BOI OL’ C.W. BACK AT IT WITH THE BOOKNOTES, and you’d better believe we’re doing another Mary Roach so TUNE IN, BUCKLE UP, DROP OUT, AND EXPLODE. These are my thoughts on her thoughts, but seriously, if you find yourself laughing or...
General happeningsThis week was OK overall. One of those weeks that's not unpleasant, but also one where nothing truly exciting happened. I'll chalk that up as a positive. Did some drawing / painting with friends in the park on the weekend; I think I'm starting to get the hang of watercolour again. I really should...
During my seven-week Spotlight trial, I was reminded of how easy it is to make file and folder launchers in Keyboard Maestro. In case you’ve also forgotten, here’s a short post on how to do it. There are three items that I open quite often and that Spotlight was slow to find: My blog-stuff directory, which is where...
Any new way of interconnecting websites and users on the IndieWeb is not only welcome but also vital for a stable counterbalance to Big Tech’s shitty walled gardens. Yesterday I stumbled across a really good and new one, that integrates also the Fediverse: Bubbles from Ben. We monitor thousands of independent,...
The Purveyor of Wisdom I spend a lot of time with my nephews, and in doing so I am the frequent beneficiary of wisdom (and laughter). The four-year old is especially verbose and has given me a number of lines that I mutter to myself as I navigate a discombobulated society. ”What you said?” Typically used when he...
in tokyo, talking to you about my favorite films from 2025I enjoyed watching this, it was very cozy and got a few recommendations of movies I haven't seen. Is nice to listen to people when they talk about their favorite things. After 20 Years, This Scientist Proved Birds Can Talk and Use Grammar. I always been...
Winnie Verloc, the widow of Mr. Verloc, the sister of the late faithful Stevie (blown to fragments in a state of innocence and in the conviction of being engaged in a humanitarian enterprise), did not run beyond the door of the parlour. She had indeed run away so far from a mere trickle of blood, but that was a...
At work, we talked about the sudden passing of a coworker's friend and how it affected him and how it is also something you have to deal with sooner or later. One coworker said: "From 30 onwards, it is likely that the first people in your friend group will die. Some due to cancer, some due to substance abuse and...
So I realised I don't really like having two categories (posts/notes), because both are in the end just same thing. My blog has gotten bit too complicated due to it, so I just moved my notes to the posts section. Apologies for the RSS feed going haywire.
This is where we’re at now. Your website needs to be AI agent ready, or it presumably no longer makes the grade. I scored eight out one-hundred. Can I get a badge? I’m not sure though disassociated is a website AI agents have any interest in anyway. In any event, AI agent readiness is the new SEO. Since responses to...
I’m in school again. I’m going back to school because my work, my entire career, for my entire adult life, has been writing things for the Internet. That’s going away, at least as a livable career option. By livable, I mean an option I can live with. When I started writing for the Internet, early 2000s, I could find...
Depuis plusieurs années, de nombreuses personnes déclarent vouloir remettre certaines choses au cœur d’autres choses. […]

Between 13 April and 19 April I shared a handful of links on social.omgmog.net. Here they are again, with a bit more room to breathe.
Returning from LV-426, Ellen Ripley crash-lands on the maximum-security prison Fiorina 161, where she discovers that she has unwittingly brought along an unwelcome visitor. Another movie, another director, another interpretation of the universe. Packed with action, while also being slowly paced at times, it finds a...
Rachelle and I voted early yesterday morning. The only thing on the ballot was redrawing the Virginia congressional voting map. Yes means you're in favor of redistricting, and No means you're not. I voted Yes. I'm not in favor of gerrymandering as a principle, but that's not really the question. The real question...
R is for Riddle So I don’t have many original riddles, but when ‘R’ came around I thought id share it. So without much ado: If cyclops from the X-Men, came out one night, after dusk, to the breaking waves of the pacific ocean. Then upon looking out, saw a man, not far.. throw a small creature. This creature flew,...
My 5G internet has worked again flawlessly since Friday afternoon. I have the suspicion it’s because, since today, there are new laws that define when mobile providers underperform and people have the right to reduce their bills; but it might also be just a reconfiguration or upgrade of cell towers nearby. I noticed...
2026-04-19Hello!I found the flash button! This event was incredible, representing a portion of student life that's alive and thriving: the arts. While I can get similar group shots of sports players, it's not the same. The joy and acceptance of everyone, casual artist or commission veteran, keeps my heart beating.The...
