To mark the 50th anniversary of the military coup in Argentina, commemorative events, marches and protests took place across the country on Tuesday, March 24. Human rights organizations organized events under the slogan “More than ever: Never again!” (más que nunca, nunca más). Using this slogan, people also...
Welcome to my Linkblog where I share interesting articles and blog posts I found about social media, Indieweb, geopolitics, Chinese and Malaysian stuff, cute cat videos or anything funny and interesting I find online.
I actually just can't bring myself reread old text conversations. It's funny enough how half of your relationship with someone is all written down, recorded, right there for anyone to see.
Download PDF The place is half-full, and I’m half-working, half-staring at a wall when the opening synth line threads through the room. That pulsing, driving riff. Kate Bush's “Running Up That Hill.” I feel it before I recognize it. Before anything like a thought arrives, my body goes warm. An involuntary smile...
I can't quite remember how I landed on Bear Blog. Maybe I wrote about it, but I'm far too lazy to check right now. I know it was a combination of a few things. Years of being part of the mainstream web finally proved too exhausting to actively pursue, which led me to the Fediverse and Mastodon. Then I discovered the...

Seriously, I did. I was driving along the coastal road; I stopped the car and got out; staggered over some large pebbles and rough sand; found a very specific rock, and said: "Hi Dad". Rewinding slightly: I was out at a meeting today, which took me further along the coast from where I live -- about 90 minutes. After...
I had always wanted to watch My Mister, but I never seemed to find the time to do it. Then, Lee Sun-kyun sadly passed away. The drama is already heavy to begin with, and the tragic way the actor passed away … seeing him play a depressed character just felt like I’m watching Lee Sun-kyun suffering for real. So,...
I think a big part of the reason the Matrix and particularly Neo was so popular with people (aside from obvious things like the ability to dodge bullets) was because he "rose up" with no effort. That is to say he was sought out. As theatrical as it may seem, I believe a lot of us do this in life as well. We wait to...
Recent additions to the Heap of Links… Fallacies as “memetic mimicry” — Steven Hales borrows from nature to describe fallacies and their significance “How do we balance the creativity needed to discover new mathematical connections with the rigor needed to ensure that every logical step is undeniable?” — debates...

Software and digital security should rely on verification, rather than trust. I want to strongly encourage more users and consumers of software to verify curl. And ideally require that you could do at least this level of verification of other software components in your dependency chains. Attacks are omnipresent...
Okay, a lot of you probably know that I am part of the group of people who run No Brand Con. Frankly, if you didn't, you're probably new here. It's an anime con. Wisconsin's longest running anime con to be specific. We're holding it May 1st-3rd here in Eau Claire. It's neat. Anyway, because I help run that event...
Jonathan Vanian, writing for CNBC: Jurors ultimately ruled in favor of the plaintiff, who claimed that Meta and YouTube’s negligence played a “substantial factor” in causing mental health-related harms. Compensatory damages were assessed at $3 million, with Meta on the hook for 70% and YouTube the remaining 30%....
See the series post for an overview of all the episodes. Introduction 00:00 Introduction and recap from last time. 07:00 Patrice revisits the syntax diagram and starts to explain the insignificant-looking but very significant (in terms of power and utility) "ref" box in that diagram, which is the start of our...
Not long ago, a blog I otherwise like a lot included this passage: Designers have been saying this for years. Cameras don’t take pictures, photographers do. Tools don’t make you a better designer. Now the PM world is arriving at the same conclusion. I am not linking to the post because I hear this argument from time...
And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul. - Unknown (commonly misattributed to John Muir) I've often given thought to wandering off into the forest to live a solitary life. I'm addicted to shows like Life Below Zero and frequently imagine what it would be like to live in isolation -- no...
Lenny opened the window to let in a little fresh air before bed. For weeks, the summer heat had seemed to stick to the walls, but that night, it relented. The moonlight reflected off the stream below, and in the clear sky above, an infinite swarm of stars wished him goodnight. I’m gonna miss this when I live in the...
theringer.comIs there enough talent, especially high-end talent, to support two more teams? How will the talent dilution affect the quality of play? Especially now, at a time when a third of the league’s teams are barely competitive (some, but not all, by design)? Will adding two more franchises exacerbate the...
I talked about building my Micro Journal in the past here, and how much I like having a distraction-free writing device for blogging, drafting things, and just getting ideas out. Well… I liked it so much that I got another one! This one is called the BYOK (the Bring Your Own Keyboard). I got it on Kickstarter and...
It’s Opening Day today, and you know what that means: It’s big ball chunky time!
Last edited 7 minutes ago. And I'm finally home again. Surrounded by cats, books, trinkets and worries. It's possible I might disappear for the coming weeks; the lack of gigs from the past few months decided to turn into a wave of one freelance work on top of another and now I'm way over my head. That's the curse of...
A smart, well-researched person is losing an argument they don’t know they’re losing. They produce nine counterpoints in rapid succession. Each one is accurate at the level of observable fact. Each one is absorbed as confirmation while the framework itself never gets tested. This is not a story about being wrong....
A look at the without thought workshop catalogs by Naoto Fukasawa and how observation is so important to design.
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop Man, so. I was sinus sick for a long time with what turned out to be laryngitis and when I finally started feeling better....I had like maybe a day or two of clear before a fever rolled back in and I had a rough weekend; Monday morning I was hit...
“We can change, evolve, and transform our own conditioning. We can choose to move like water rather than be molded like clay.” It is strange how, in a universe governed by relentless change, human beings hunger for constancy — our bodies wired for homeostasis, our minds hooked on habit, our hearts yearning for...
Been jumping genres in my reading and craving something less escapist, so I'm checking out Nature's Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation Starts in Your Yard by Douglas Tallamy. A few friends have been inspired by the approach outlined in the book, turning their backyards into a "homegrown national...
Cherry tree in front of the Togetsukyo bridge is illuminated by the sun before it goes behind the mountains. None are full yet, but almost every cherry tree in Arashiyama is blooming now.
March 2026. Bonn. Germany. You can’t really claim to have visited a German city till you’ve bought a pastry in Rewe, misunderstood the local transport system, and checked in a beer on Untappd. At Brauhaus Bonnsch you go for the cloudy Kolsch in a weird vessel that’s vaguely reminiscent of that Lees glass you stole...
This month’s IndieWeb Carnival is hosted by James, who has chosen the topic Museum memories. I love my local museums, most are part of North East Museums, which are free to enter and have a publicly accessible archive. I spent many childhood hours (free days out for three kids is a big win) between the Hancock...
2026-03-26Hello!Woah. I just realized that if you look back at yesterday's article, and really stare at the image, you start seeing dots. Put the image on fullscreen (or zoom in) and let me know if you also see grid illusions.Anyway, I'd like to write up a short story today. I call it a story, not a dream journal....
I have been meaning to read this book since it was released; alas, life happens, and it took me a full year to get on with it. My humble apologies! (in the interest of full disclosure: the author and I have been acquainted online for a number of years) Beware: grief; brief description of the ravages of Alzheimer’s....
I am writing an article about Marginalia Search. I wanted to check something on the search results page. Since Marginalia is good at turning up small web and vintage websites and articles, I decided to search for an old school unsung Pokémon. After thinking for about 15 seconds, I settled on Seadra. Seadra seems...
There are three epic music albums, released in the seventies and the eighties, produced by musicians from the other side of the Atlantic (Irish and British), that describe the United States much better (and even in a prophetic way) than what the Americans ever could (or wanted). The three albums are, in order of...
Madeline [full text], by Ludwig Bemelmans, is rightly a classic of children’s literature. Its iconic imagery and characters have been adapted into numerous other media, and I’d be willing to bet that most readers could finish the second line of its opening couplet: In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines...
On February 23, 2026, Morning Brew published a report headlined Axe body spray wants to cut through the fog. I quote the opening paragraph: Axe is looking to get out of the cloud business. The body spray company knows it’s infamous for making locker rooms look like cigar lounges, so it’s taking a lighter approach by...
March 26, 2026 I've had a Medium account since 2015 with several hundred posts, and still pulling around 500 views a week, all free and outside the Partner Program. I hadn't visited or posted in a very long time. Today, for no particular reason, I pulled up my profile. The first thing I noticed is that Medium is...
Probably many people have said this before, but it just occurred to me this past week as I have been teaching the dialogue under discussion. The Platonic dialogue that we call the Republic bears the Greek title Πολιτεία (Politeia), which Allan Bloom suggests might best be translated Regime — or, periphrastically,...
Made it to number 100! It's crazy to see that I've written 100 of these posts almost every week (I skipped one week in October 2024 and one in December, same year) for nearly two years. I've done some work on the site recently and you can now find a list of all previous linkdumps here, and everything from all...
Yesterday I was walking with my brother and walking friends by the Thames in London, from Southwark Cathedral to Rotherhithe, by way of St Margaret Pattens, All Hallows by the Tower, Tower Bridge, the Mayflower Inn (lunch) and St Mary, Rotherhithe, accompanied by a more than lively breeze and flurries of hail. In...
Originally published in 1958, this was Brian W. Aldiss’ first novel. The story follows primitive men trying to understand and find out the truth about their world, a dangerous place overtaken by nature. However, there are clues and hints of technology beyond their understanding and a truth to be uncovered. The main...
Little Molly was obsessed with radios. (Adult Molly is also obsessed with radios.) Thing is, Little Molly didn't get to do much with radios except have one in her bedroom as an alarm clock. Little Molly's parents didn't think twice about radios. And even though Little Molly asked for a crystal radio kit for every...
Below are a list of sites that I think are worth both sharing with others, and archiving for my future enjoyment. If you're done looking around here and are looking to surf the web old-school by following links, then click away on whatever strikes your fancy! Note: this will never be a complete list. I will add to...
In my spirit of being slightly controversial, I combined the pages of forest god Hiisi and male Tapio. As requested, I made a page for Tursas/Turilas, but that led me to side tangents and I also added pages for Uros (mythic saviour from the sea) as well as Tiera. I also added some... anti-Nazi stuff on the front...

Cleaning your room or apartment can be a cleansing activity. If your apartment is dirty or cluttered with things, it also clutters your mind. There will always be this thought in the back of your head that this should be tidy, that this can be clean if you would just do the chore. Things lying around take up mental...
At Front End Study Hall yesterday there was a discussion about what endeavours are similar to web development. There was a particularly rich discussion (documented in the afore-linked notes) related to gardening and web development. My takeaway from the discussion was that building for the web has more in common...
If you’re watching only one video today, make it this one. Not only is it exceptionally beautifully written, shot, color graded and edited, but it also has a very important message. All you need right now is a win. Sometimes, whether or not we feel like we’re in a slump, the most important thing we can do is think...
You may have seen this article by Joe Rossignol in MacRumors yesterday. It’s about a new feature in macOS 26.4 that’s designed to keep us from pasting dangerous commands in Terminal. If a user pastes such a command, this warning pops up: Near the end of the article, Rossignol says We have yet to determine exactly...
If your Lenten resolve has failed, know that you are not alone. This past week I have slipped back into pre-Lent habits and not done as much as I have been in the way of personal prayer, contemplation, and scripture study. This is mostly why I have not been keeping up with my Lent posts, but it also has to do with...
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here in daily posts. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. Meta and YouTube designed addictive products that harmed young people, jury finds, The Guardian. The fines are negligible, but what matters most here is the precedent this ruling...
human.json is exactly the kind of nerdy metadata silliness that is designed to amuse me. It’s a protocol to vouch for people’s websites created by Beto Dealmeida. It basically works by offering a little json file with a list of websites one trusts to be human who doesn’t use AI to write their blog posts. It’s nice...
Okay so Mozilla has gone deep into the AI hole again, so I’ve switched back to Waterfox, a fork of Waterfox that focuses on the core browsing experience and eschews all of the stuff that nobody actually wants.Waterfox is great, but its app icon is ugly and doesn’t look like a browser to me.macOS does let you...
