(image courtesy of Suika Litchi) life is strange, each day spent pacing this quiet anteroom. my footsteps echo and bounce off the walls around me, as regular and as plodding as my still-beating heart. even as we both tire further, driven desperately by a compulsion within—to punish? to remedy? to cower? to atone?—to...
“Leave something of sweetness and substance in the mouth of the world.” I lost my darling friend Emily Levine (October 23, 1944–February 3, 2019) just as Figuring, in which she rightly occupies the first line of the acknowledgements, was being released. The book would not have existed without her, nor would The...
People from the University of Oxford are organising events related to free software: FLOSS @ Oxford. On Thursday, the 12th of March 2026, at 6 PM United Kingdom time (GMT) I will give a talk titled Computing in freedom with GNU Emacs. My intention is to introduce Emacs to a wide audience. Participation is open to...
I added limited support for Webmention to this site’s static site generator using remy/wm this weekend. (By limited support, I mean that I can now send outbound webmentions when I’d like. I have no webmention endpoint, however, so I can’t receive them. I’m okay with that, at least for now.) #indieweb #web
February 2026. Turin. You’ll be wanting to see Mrs RM’s tourist map for Turin, the highlights marked with chocolate bars. Our first target after checking at I Reali guesthouse was food. What’s more authentically Torino than an artisan burger at a brew pub with cask near a skate park ? Open Baladin is the BrewDog...
I’ve been handling a lot of WordPress this week. At work, oh boy, and also around here on my blog. My database woes are documented, everything else doesn’t need to be mentioned and can get lost in the rivers of time. At least as far as I am concerned. I found a book on my Kindle that I pre-ordered a long time ago...
Rivi is lying on the dog bed in the sun room, a pillow under her head, leaning against the glass window. Even though it’s winter and in the low twenties outside, the skies are clear and true to form, the thermostat in the sun room reads precisely one hundred degrees. Physics is wild like that. “You’re going to smell...
I drive German, but not an Audi. Mine is another finely engineered German make. You can’t beat German technology. They engineer everything to perfection, like the Japanese. If it’s German, it’s not just good, it is excellent. It’s in their DNA, I think. Today’s task required some of that precision engineering. The...
I was sent a video of a deer eating a begonia. I thought to myself that begonias do not sound like ideal deer food. According to Coast Redwood Adventures, begonias are a deer-resistant plant. Granting the caveats in the CRA article that deer-resistant is not deer-proof, I have reason to question the deer resistance...
With the upcoming movie adaptation, I guess it's a good of a time as ever to remind myself the Rendezvous with Rama. Rama is a gigantic alien vessel which travels though the universe and reaches the Solar System around the year 2130. Mankind is sending a small scientific vessel where a group of explorers can learn...
The weather forecast promised +4°C. But somehow I missed the fact that it was going to be rather windy. I realized my mistake when standing at the rooftop of P2, waiting for a Boeing 737-800 operated by Alba Star (reg. EC-NAB) to depart for Venice.
Oprah Winfrey and I have something in common, which is that our favorite album is Paul Simon’s Graceland. I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the opening track, “The Boy in the Bubble”. The song can be read a few different ways, but I read it as an aging man amazed by modernity but also kind of frightened by it,...
Hi Chris! I hope this u-in-reply-to webmention reaches you (it’s the first time I’m using this Microformat markup type). Your guestbook is a retro and fun page; a nice surprise and contrast to your clean, modern, and user-friendly site. Looking forward to reading more of your content and discovering your site’s...
Modern CSS code snippets, side by side with the old hacks they replace. Every technique you still Google has a clean, native replacement now. There are really useful new CSS features that I’m embarrassed to say I knew nothing about.
WE NEED TO CONTINUE TO SING THIS SONG SO THAT FUTURE GENERATIONS KNOW WHAT WE MEAN AND WHY WE MEAN IT
Polly Pockets is the cutest, most snuggly cat we have. We got her and Mac at a kitten adoption event here in the Richmond area in 2024. I would describe her physical appearance as a medium/long hair, calico, ragamuffin mix. Polly Pockets, in all her glory. She got her name because, as a kitten, she really wanted to...
Ughhhh, this has been a heck of a week.As usual I’ve been full of pain. And my brief surge of enthusiasm for working on music got cut kind of short because of it. But I’m hoping that tomorrow feels better and I can go back to the studio.I’m also not sure where I stand with my fatigue. The last few days I’ve had to...
“I shall have ever present to my memory the dreadful day, on which I saw my father and mother killed, and my sister ravished. When the Bulgarians retired, my dear sister could not be found; but my mother, my father, and myself, with two maidservants and three little boys all of whom had been slain, were put in a...
It's 2 a.m., and I'm writing this in my childhood bedroom. But I'm not a child anymore, and I've come to that horrible realization that probably comes upon everyone in their early twenties, when they think they've been changing for the worse. As I write this, I can hear the voice of reason in my head saying,...
Gak begitu inget, tapi tipe musik rock alternatif begini memang tren di pertengahan 2000-an, jadi mungkin...
You've probably heard of microformats before, if youre on the technical site of the indie web. If you haven't, long story short: Microformats are a way to attach metadata to the HTML of your personal website, using just HTML. For example, this is how you would use microformats to add an author to a blogpost. <a...
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop Fri 02/13/2026 - Wartortle By special request! (Reminder that you can at any time ping me anywhere I'm pingable, even in the comments on one of these posts, to request a pokemon. As longas I haven't done it yet lol) I'd kinda forgotten how much I...
Proud to finally have a new version of Omnibear available that improves login security and allows replying to mastodon and bluesky posts! Posted via Omnibear v2.2.0 Also posted to: news.indieweb.org
This post is a continuation of this one where I talked about what my first psychiatric appointment was like. I highly recommend reading it first before you dive into this one because it contains a lot of context. Day 1 My first day on Atomoxetine was... definitely something. The memory of this day got permanently...
I've been thinking about writing a post on the Discord age verification thing, but the entire situation is milked to death by content creators right now. Everyone feels the need to throw their conspiracy theories and misinformation into every comment section as well, so it just feels like a lot of noise and panic...
Some thoughts swirling around in my head after watching the new documentaryThere are two kinds of people in the world: Those who don’t know much, or anything at all, about Jeff Buckley. Those who adore him to bits. I’m staunchly in the latter camp. The new doc, It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, I felt, is for the...
In the web design sense, "breadcrumbs" are the navigation helpers on many websites that show you where you are in the site — a path from where you currently are, back up the folder/URL structure, to the homepage. The terminology comes from the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel where the titular children are left to...
"Stratagemi Ingegnosi" (Ingenious Stratagems) from the Gli abiti de veneziani (1754) by Giovanni Grevembroch, translated by René Seindal.
I discuss recent changes to the website such as a reintroduction of a comment form to the website, posts, and my intentions to blog more frequently about more than just design and artwork.
A primeira vez eu demorei a me reacostumar com o jogo. Algumas mudanças desde o Cold Steel me...

Paul Thomas Anderson's flick is a mood — and like squash, requires gumption to peel but worth the effort. ⊕Currently Listening: Gil Scott-Heron “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”Reply via email
I used to have a blog during my university years. It was in WordPress, hosted at https://thiagoperrotta.wordpress.com/, called “Everyday Serendipity”. At first I would write in my mother tongue (Portuguese), then I would switch to English. This was a great way to practice and improve my English back then. At some...
The latest artwork is larger than a usual PC-98 image but it shares characteristics of it in almost every other respect. It depicts an elf mage in a 1990s style. I wanted it to look like it was from an obscure OVA.
I have pretty consistently used TickTick for years now. It’s really good. But no one talks about it! It’s a thing, right? You either try all the todo apps and change every few months. Or, if you are a developer, you write your own. But I want to write about TickTick. I heard about TickTick via word of mouth, and...
Something I really appreciate about Bear Blog (and personal blogging in general) is that there’s no intended audience involved. When I write on here I’m just writing to write. I’m trying to write a lot more in general. And publish what I write. I don’t know that I have a specific goal.1 Maybe write something every...
New entry for the devlog: We now have a proper distinction between singleplayer/multiplayer-coop. The later one is now also fully functional. For coop I implemented player-specific colors, so it is possible to see who dropped which blocks (will be configurable in future). Without it looked a bit “chaotic”. Also I...
Days without turning off site blockers: 0 I'm in a slump. Today was the first 'official' day of my break and I spent most of it doing some lousy cleaning and crocheting (I finished one of my mitts!). I'm starting to think this is an issue with ups and downs in sleep & diet.
Huge expansion on Maahiset page, added pages for Kivutar, Kaleva and Kullervo in deitties and heroes, and for Liekkiö in creatures. Additional resources linked in Links.
Today’s prompt is “Have you unintentionally broken the law?” Well, first off, pretty presumptuous of you to assume it was unintentional. But we won’t get into all that… statute of limitations and such. Let’s just say, I have committed acts that fall somewhere between “mildly illegal” and “morally questionable but...
This is an excellent video about modern UI/UX: "The Hidden Cost of 'Clean' Design." I highly recommend watching it and checking out Ilia's other work. I agree with nearly everything in the video, including this standout quote: If you want to understand a generation, don't listen to what its witnesses say. Look at...
Having a proud dad moment. On Friday, our eldest son broke his college’s mile record, and later that day ran the 10th best time in school history in the 800m.
We all know it's important to manage our money well, but holy mother of mackerel can it feel overwhelming to actually do so. At least on the surface. I think that personal finance1 can be complicated, but for most people, it's one of those fields where 20% of the knowledge takes you 80% of the way to where you want...
I see everyone doing weeknotes or monthly recaps, and I want in. Except, I don’t want to tie myself down to a weekly or monthly format, so instead, these kind of posts will just appear randomly whenever I feel I have something to say. This will just be some sort of freeform rambling. I want to lower the bar as much...
Preparing to Celebrate Lunar New Year Permalink to section 'Preparing to Celebrate Lunar New Year' # This was the final week before Lunar New Year! As per tradition, my family and I have been preparing to celebrate Lunar New Year, by shopping, cleaning our house, putting up decorations, and so on. We have planned to...
Working in the grocery industry, you’re forced to think well into the future, whether you like to or not. That means your local grocery store is already focusing on Easter Sunday, now that Valentine’s is out of the way. This sticks out more than normal this year because on the fact of everything that has happened...
I just read the editorial of the current Bergwelten magazine and this paragraph expresses so well the difference of AI to our real world: AI …

There are many offerings these days which can be overwhelming, so this guide aims to provide a high level overview of the landscape so you can figure out which path you want to take. The intent of...
Authors note. This little something was supposed to bloom into something else, but it never did. Still though, I think it captures a moment, which is equally as smashing! We slowly draw closer in the enveloping blackness. My porch light illuminates his questioning, but oh so eager, face as we draw closer, collapsing...
An interesting 14-minute video about a bug in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: San Andreas was released in 2004, but the game started breaking only after Windows got updated… in 2024. Turns out the bug was sort of a ticking time bomb just waiting for the right set of conditions. We covered one similar bug before, in...
Weekly Thing 341 brings up AI fatigue: With that though our ability to do more fills with more things that we wished we could do. No matter what, there is still only so much time and energy in the day. The fact that Claude is there at 2am while you cannot sleep can be a problem. The fact that you can have five...
So I was browsing X when several posts about the hashtag “#keep4o” started molesting my timeline. And then one popped up. It was someone who was telling people that they have a community as a support circle for 4o users. This server will not be revealed. For ulterior reasons you probably can figure out yourself, I...
