To God is thanksgiving due: for allowing us entry into a new year, more time to serve, learn, repent, or praise; for protection, patience, providence, and all the other “P” words of the alphabet ─ and for the whole alphabet; for bringing us through one of the most difficult years in recent history. ¶ Because of...
How the world is a matter of perception. The way to achieving what we want lies on how we look at what's in front of us. A small success may blind us or display the truth with full-blown reality; a tiny problem might cause unnecessarily swirling emotions or shows a new way to resolve—all matter of perception. An...
A really fun 2021 story by Fabien Sanglard at the perfect-for-me intersection of bugs and typography. In 1991, just days before the final deadlines, Akira Nishitani, one of the graphic designers of the absolutely seminal arcade game Street Fighter II realized they misspelled the world “Warrior” as “Warrier.” The...
Brief post on a somewhat vexing and irritating C++ problem I ran into some time ago. I hope that this page will help other people deal with this problem more quickly than I did. I’ve long used std::basic_string<uint8_t>, an unsigned char string, for fiddling with bits. You could use a regular char string, but...
I wrote some time ago about the benefits of wired headphones, including the fairly obvious fact that they are harder to lose. Well, I bought some AirPods 4 NC and had been getting along fine until I was on holiday over the Christmas period, opened the case and found the left AirPod missing. Find my stuff says it is...
I was recently reverse-engineering parts of the OpenTable API, and wasn't sure how to refresh the Bearer token. We can get the initial one by going through a number of requests: https://mobile-api.opentable.com/oauth/consumer/token to get a logged out token, then through...
I just added two new themes to my ef-themes package. ef-orange is a light theme with a noticeably tinted background that combines orange, yellow, and green hues. ef-fig is a dark theme with a dark purple background that relies on green, yellow, and pink hues. Sample pictures are available below. Check all the items...
Since we’re at the start of a new year, I will stop fine-tuning everything on this blog and let it live as the receptacle it’s supposed to be. With my mind cleared of HTML and CSS concerns, I now have energy to waste on new optimisations of my digital environment, and this time with an old favourite of mine: content...

This entry lacks any elegance and prose. I write it as an enthusiastic reader, not a writer. There are things requiring no decoration. Reflection Here I am, once again, trying to remember which books I read (now read that line with ‘Let it go’ tone. My daughter has gotten Frozen songs stuck in my head, I sing them...
Roshan: Created page with "Amusingly accurate I don't listen to too many podcasts, but a few times I've put the Joe Rogan Experience on while I'm driving down to the South Bay. The most typical two complaints about Joe Rogan are that he platforms terrible people and that he doesn't challenge them on their views. I'm...
iPhone Tracking Requests Did you have a moment when the Internet seemed like a magical creation? Was there ever a time when you sat at a keyboard or held a phone and discovered you could use it to do something you’d once only read about as science fiction? In the old days, back in the 1900s, BTI (Before the...
"Teriaca" (Theriac) from the Lessico Veneto (1851) by Fabio Mutinelli, translated by René Seindal.
There are a lot of things on my mind on the eve of Yuri Ryona Jam. On one hand, I’ve been sketching away at the big picture for this project for several months now and I am super excited to finally put rubber to the road. On the other hand, this is going to be my largest writing project to date, and I’m a bit scared...
Time for one of those end of year/start of year posts. By way of introduction, or re-introduction, I'm Kell Shaw and I write books and short fiction in the secondary world urban fantasy Vestiges of Magic universe. I'd like to dig more into my fantasy world and creative choices this year in bloggery, so stay tuned...
Every deviation from default is slowing you down from getting started and making it harder to help others. I use about 5 distinct laptops/desktops on an average day, not to mention the VMs within them and other machines I shell into. Having a consistent experience is useful, but equally important is my ability to...
The EconomistI’m blowing up ships in international waters, breaking domestic and international laws, invading other countries, asking people for their papers on the street and rounding them up based on inherent traits, and participating in genocide. Who am I?
I finally watched a movie. I didn't care for it. lol. Actors were great. Ending was weak. Too easy to spoil so I won't go into detail as to why. [I put all the details as to why in my obsidian notes so nobody can get mad at me for being wrong.]

A while ago I made HTML Element of the Day, a site that selects a HTML element every day to be designated the “HTML element of the day.”When I built this project, I decided that I wanted to offer both a web page and a web feed to which people could subscribe. Rather than build an RSS feed for the project, I decided...
To be quite honest: I could use roughly two to fifty-two weeks for my own code. Reply by email
Look if I’m gonna do a post every day we’re gonna need to get a little more liberal about what constitutes ‘effort’ and ‘content’ and ‘language’. It’s been my custom since about 2010 to keep a running list of everything I read; in addition to satisfying my need to record and preserve as much information as...
I was working on a revision of the Manual WordPress theme to coincide with our upcoming migration from WordPress to ClassicPress. I couldn't resist and implemented it here on the blog while still on WordPress. (ClassicPress is scheduled to come into play in March.) One of the new features is this behind-the-scenes...
On my homepage, I have a carousel of what I call "testimonials" — some nice things lovely people said about me over the years. For the longest time, I'd pick one from the array to display at build time. As part of my work to reduce build time, I decided to display them all so the homepage wasn't considered "new" for...
Abstract Traditional philosophical skepticism targets truth claims, asking “How can we know this is true?” Deferential Realism applies skeptical analysis to constraint claims, asking instead “What type of constraint is this, and what does that imply for action?” This paper presents a novel epistemological framework...
A developer’s journey of building a recursive descent parser in Go, from basic concepts to tackling left recursion with Packrat memoization.
There have been a few updates to the software I'm running on my personal machines over the last few months that I thought I should cover. I realized the last time I wrote about my DEs and stuff I said I was testing Hyprland. Portable PC I finally replaced my 2016 Dell XPS laptop with a Surface Pro 7 that was laying...
Previously. If we can stash untracked files (git stash -u), should we be able to git diff untracked files? Naturally, diffing an untracked file would output the entire file contents. Still, this can be desirable sometimes. When reviewing multiple files, some of which are modified, and some of which are brand new,...
December 2025. Mirfield. Enough of this “Christmas” nonsense scuppering rail plans, the 27th brings a chance to escape Sheffield and gets some steps in. My route skips Leeds for a change, with a stop in Wakefield Kirkgate’s artistic tunnel, and another in Mirfield. Something to do with Star Wars, I guess. I...
Last month I've lived in my current apartment for exactly 10 years, which means it's now time to replace the smoke alarms, which you're supposed to do after 10 years. When I was a kid, I always took everything I could get my hands on apart to see what it looked like on the inside, much to the dismay of my parents at...
Note from future amy:I wrote this through a lot of feelings, so cut me a little slack for all the hard feelings pls!! Note that this is very personal and was hard for me to write about.
One unexpected game design lesson from Rebirth’s Ireland side for me is this: The game has random distribution of “Tower” powers and in a two player game, a random eight of the twelve goals will be public and a random two will be available as private goals and two won’t be in a game (in a four player game all twelve...
📚 Book 1 of 2026 - Finished: House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas (4/5⭐) The second book in the Crescent City series. I picked this up as soon as I finished House of Earth and Blood because I had to know what happened next. It took me a little bit longer to finish this one, and I realized that I may need to take...
