Hope for Wildlife is a wildlife rehabilitation and education organization located in Seaforth, Nova Scotia. They have a few pens and trails so we met up with some cousins to wander around this afternoon. I learned today that they also have a reality TV show, I found some of them on Youtube here If you want to visit...
Earlier this year, I migrated my static sites off of Vercel and on to a VPS in Europe. At $5 CAD per month after exchange, it isn’t a bad deal, but I’ve also been paying attention to the Canadian scene to see what products are coming to market that might help small businesses or bloggers. Worktree has been on my...
Three things I thank God for: DD made the move to Hville safe and sound, with good help; What first appeared to be a skin blemish turned out not to be; Friends confirmed to spend Christmas with us, arriving Mon. ¶ Found my iPad mini Mom bought for me years ago, charged it up. Might use it for my sermon notes...
I use git, as the version control system both at my workplace and to store my personal code (including the source of this blog). I use different e-mails for personal and work repositories, as well as different SSH keys for different accounts (this is because Github, at least, does not allow different accounts to use...
The title is poking fun at the type of person at work that implies young people are lazy while doing jack shit too, and I use ‘Boomer’ colloquially, meaning not just the late ones born 1955–1964, but also the some of the early Gen Xers born 1965–1970. The young people don’t wanna work anymore, huh? You know what...
"Arte Quadrupla" (Quadruple Art) from the Gli abiti de veneziani (1754) by Giovanni Grevembroch, translated by René Seindal.
While preparing this new AppDefaults post for the passing year 2025, I took a look back at the two previous posts from 2023 and 2024 and find it exciting to see how my behavior has gradually changed over time. A slight shift away from the tools offered by large American companies towards small European alternatives...
I love the Truman Show. It's an all time favourite for me and I wanted to put some thoughts about it out today. The Truman Show, for those unaware, is about a man named Truman who grows up in a reality show revolving around his life. The people around him are all paid actors, and their main work is to paint the...
SPONSORED This week’s ad slot was purchased by friend of Foofaraw, Evan Passero, in support of DIFFA Dallas—providing critical financial support to North Texas AIDS service organizations that offer direct care to adults, families, and children living with or impacted by HIV/AIDS.Foofaraw will match up to $300 in...
This story about a long-time Apple developer and writer who has been locked out of his account without explanation and without any means of redress has been making the rounds in Apple-user world. And he’s not the only one: scroll to the bottom of that post and you’ll see that the blogger, Michael Tsai, has covered...
To the holiday decorations At the end of today I'm off for two weeks (barring any emergencies) and I'm happy to, despite not being any form of religious whatsoever, enjoy some winter holiday. We finally busted out our stuff and Snoops is pretty stoked. He's enjoying new things to climb around and knock off of...
[Equations in this post may not look right (or appear at all) in your RSS reader. Go to the original article to see them rendered properly.] I’ve talked about area moments of inertia in the past couple of posts. Today, thanks to Phil Plait, resident astronomer at Scientific American, I have an excuse to talk about...
And now the exciting conclusion. Maybe not that exciting, but they try. And perhaps not a conclusion, as we're still 20 something episodes until the very end. Still: The crew of Voyager is infiltrating Borg Cube as Drones. It's Voyager, so we know that nothing bad will happen, but Tuvok fighting with the call of the...
Loved this little game. A neat cross between a loot shooter and an advancement-path chooser. The premise is that you are trying to clear slimes from a 2D plane in the quickest way possible to advance levels. There are about ten different ways to embellish your stats along the way, which are introduced at a good pace...
In 2022, I wrote a post called The Lotus philosophy applied to blog design, in which I was trying to explain how the Lotus philosophy of lighter cars for improved performance could apply to web design, and to my blog in particular. I wrote: For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a fan of Lotus. From the Esprit...
Date: December 19, 2025Method: UKE_G Recursive TriangulationTarget: “Evaluating Large Language Models in Scientific Discovery” (SDE Benchmark) Two days ago, a new benchmark paper dropped claiming to evaluate how well large language models perform at scientific discovery. The paper introduced SDE (Scientific...
I picked up this little bundle of cuteness which I can lug into the office with me and use with my iPad. I could not justify spending £50 on one of those fancy, flimsy official Apple iPad cover keyboards… I just wanted something that I could use to type. My iPad is getting on a bit but it still has exceptional...

It’s been a hectic week with lots of things running in parallel, and some are set to conclude in a few weeks. It is the last 20% to 30% of the work that takes the most time. I think I will be swamped through the holidays. Day 6: drawing shapes with pencil and brush, snow :) 20251217 I started #30DaysOfWatercoloring,...
Even with everything that's going on in our lives right now, I quietly managed to work on Sky scraper. Firstly, I renamed it to TERMINAL-1090. Why? Because while I liked the Sky scraper name, it felt a bit too generic. The new name is more closely related to aviation, and is in line with the main technologies it...
I have a page on my site, /post, which lists all of my blog posts. For at least the last year, the HTML document title used on the page has been Posts in the Post Category. This is because the page uses the same template as my other category pages. Posts in the Coffee Category make sense; Posts in the Post Category...
Anna and Quân got married today! Eryn and I came in yesterday morning to be here. Al (Eryn and Anna’s dad) performed the ceremony, which was set against a backdrop of the Superstition Mountains in Lost Dutchman State Park, just east of Phoenix. He’s done this a few times before—he’s retired after over 40 years of...
A fun and short video from Juniper Dev about how Undertale is a fantastic game despite being fantastically poorly written: When you make dialogue in a video game you have a distinct file that has all the possible text that can pop up in your game. This is usually a CSV file, or a JSON, and you can think of it as...
Day 47, Do you consider yourself to be an international person? Why or why not? If so, write about people you know or have known from other countries. No, I hope to be at some point. But at the time of writing this, I haven’t been international. Will update this if that changes, later, though.
Holidays are here, and I am trying to finish my work for this year. In the meantime, whenever I have some free time, I feel an urge to write more blog posts about my life in 2025. This urge to write is stronger whenever I come across blog posts on powRSS and BearBlog about the conclusion of the year. It is so...

Last year we spent the end of December in Portugal, which started a new family tradition of travelling abroad for the Christmas season. We don’t like the cold, Mariah Carey and George Michael songs are not particularly to our taste, and overeating Christmas food just because it’s the holiday season is disgusting. We...
Last year, I decided to give back, in a small way, the amount I receive from projects, services, apps, or people through a “gratitude subscription.” Every month, a contribution of around €10 as a thank you for using it, for the information, or for existence itself1. I repeated the experiment. This is my donation...
December 2025. Gravesend. Kent. The route from home (1) to home (2) to home (3) is fairly well-established now. Friday saw the Rye to Waterbeach via St Pancras leg, interrupted by a short diversion at Ebbsfleet International, one of the UK’s least used (per square foot) railway stations now the Eurostar avoid it on...
Wendy Hanamura Valerio Bozzolan...
As someone who swears rather a lot (never in print, of course), I was pleased to come across this excellent research-based report on 'Why swearing makes you stronger'. Not only is swearing, as we all know, big, and clever, and enjoyable; it can also boost your performance, at least when it comes to holding your hand...
It’s Blogvent, day 20, where I blog daily in December! Last year, almost exactly a year ago today, I wrote that I was becoming a minor writing utensil snob. Unfortunately for my wallet, I don’t think I can call myself a minor snob anymore. I’m approaching the big leagues. I write daily in a physical leather journal...
Christmas tree near Chancery Lane station, London. Last weekend’s start of a cold turned into a full-blown one on Monday. I went into the office as usual but felt as though I was wandering around with a hangover. Everyone was telling me to go home, but it never felt quite bad enough. That night and the next day were...

Sarah Perez, writing for TechCrunch: Elon Musk’s X is updating its Terms of Service to indicate it still lays claim to the “Twitter” trademark. The move to add this detail to the company’s terms follows an announcement from a Virginia-based startup, which recently filed an application to trademark the term...
"Stop the Cavalry" by Jona Lewie For the longest time I thought Jona Lewie was the singer from Dexy's Midnight Runners but he isn't. This is a perennial anti war song that mentions Christmas once and, so, has been co-opted by the Chrimbo Tunes Brigade. I listen to this all year round cause it's a bop. Thanks for...
After writing a couple of weeks ago about how I was taking it easy this holiday season and trying to not get caught up in the stress, pretty much all that went out the window and the typical pre-holiday stress has hit full force. Rather than fight it, I’m leaning into it, reminding myself this is largely “good...
Posted by NIGHTEN on December 20, 2025 In September 2024, I finally took the leap and launched my art newsletter, something I was dreaming about for months beforehand. Flash-forward to 2025, and I still kept the habit of publishing one new issue every single week, first on Sunday evening and then on Tuesday evening....
Last year, Lemire wrote about an optimized variation of the Euclidean algorithm for computing the greatest common divisor of two numbers, called binary Euclidean algorithm or Stein’s algorithm. It’s a best-of-class implementation, though it’s currently only used by libc++. The post also briefly mentions the extended...
Two of the most dangerous myths we live with are the idea, handed down to us by the Romantics, that in true love two people meet each other’s every need and desire, and the idea, sold to us by the merchants of materialism and woven into the fundamental mythos of the modern world, that happiness is a matter of...
Dear reader,The Techlore forum has for years been my favorite place to discuss privacy-related things among like-minded people. Unfortunately, the time for that has now ended, as the forum is shutting down next year while being read-only until then. As someone who has been an active member on the forum since it got...
I’ve been meaning to write this for a couple weeks now, well… far longer than that actually because I’ve grown tired of witnessing the delight people seem to find in pointing out who has been photographed with Jeffrey Epstein over the years. With the carefully redacted release of more of the Epstein files today, I...
I had a plan to be productive today and sports cards messed it up. My goal was to make a significant dent in decluttering and organizing our garage. I started with the best of intentions and the first thirty minutes went well. I went through a box of camping gear and was able to get rid of things that had obviously...
