I see the British Board of Film Classification has conducted a poll to find the nation's favourite Christmas film. The results are pretty bizarre. I suppose if It's A Wonderful Life didn't exist, you might go for The Muppets Christmas Carol or Elf, or even, at a pinch, Home Alone – which in the event came top by a...
Day 44, Are you an exerciser? What physical achievement are you most proud of? Ever play any sports? I love riding my bike, and I love running. Basically, if it’s cardio I’m here for it. No crazy physical achievements. Oh, this one time when I was a teen and began running a few miles I found this groove that was...
AutoDescriptor: Added page description via AutoDescriptor bot The point of getting rich is to be able to do more things. The people who I like and admire seem to all have this trait. For them, the amount of things you want to do is usually far larger than the things you have the resources to do. In fact, if I look...
Almost everything that makes this collection worth reading happens between 1962 and 1964, with 1962 being the year when Kenner and Davenport are maximally stimulating of each other’s ideas — as I think this post demonstrates. Much later in life, both men are aware that their friendship is not what it once was. In...
Note: Written in response to Adam Mastroianni, “The Decline of Deviance.” experimental-history.com. October 28, 2025. There’s a strange thing happening: people are getting more similar. Teenagers drink less, fight less, have less sex. Crime rates have dropped by half in thirty years. People move less often. Movies...
The point, of course, is to see the whole — what Virginia Woolf called “the thing itself.” Not just to uncover the fragments and discover how each works but to understand their harmonic unity — the sum that, as the forgotten genius Willard Gibbs knew, “is simpler than its parts,” simpler and more beautiful, the way...
So, I’ve been working on my music collection and it is really coming along. I’ve downloaded a metric shit ton of music in the last month. My biggest problem remains, however. Metadata is crap. Even though now all of my files are meticulously named and organized, the so-called metadata search only works about 80% of...
It’s Blogvent, day 4, where I blog daily in December! CSS clamp() is cool and you should use it. In a sentence, clamp() lets you assign a value to a CSS property between a minimum and a maximum range, and uses a preferred value in that range. It’s really helpful for responsive layouts and typography! Syntax clamp()...

MySpace in September 2003, the month after its launch. The term “digital native” was coined in 2001 by writer and teacher Marc Prensky, who wrote that “our students today are all 'native speakers' of the digital language of computers, video games and the Internet.” The rest of us are “digital immigrants,” which...
Ecosia, the search engine that directs its profits to climate action, asks whether there’s a “green” alternative for generative AI in the title of this post — and in the same post’s headline answers that “the world’s greenest AI is here.” The “greenest AI,” that paradox, is the one Ecosia just launched integrated...

Is Pixelfed sawing off the branch that the Fediverse is sitting on? In January 2025, I became aware that there was a real problem with Pixelfed, the "Instagram inspired Fediverse client". The problem is threatening the whole Fediverse. As Pixelfed received a lot of media attention, I choose to wait. In March 2025, I...
A while ago, I wrote about intentional times of boredom for easier task switching, because I noticed there was an inner resistance when I had let go of a task in favor of another. In response, I gave myself the space and time to just sit there doing nothing. That meant a proper pause between activities, and it also...
The signs are everywhere if you know where to look. A senior SOC analyst submits their resignation via email on a Friday afternoon. A CISO confides to their peer over coffee that they’d take a pay cut just to have weekends back. A threat intelligence researcher stares blankly at their monitor at 2 AM, knowing they...

Kurzgesagt making sense of a non-sensical universe: For decades, we’ve had a beautiful theory of the cosmos. One that explained how the universe began, what it’s made of, and how it’s supposed to behave. It matched our observations astonishingly well and made us feel like we’d almost deciphered the cosmic code. But...
The four travelers passed through the rest of the forest in safety, and when they came out from its gloom saw before them a steep hill, covered from top to bottom with great pieces of rock. “That will be a hard climb,” said the Scarecrow, “but we must get over the hill, nevertheless.” So he led the way and the...

If you were to start preparing for ML roles today, what would your step by step approach look like, the concepts you would focus on and what strategies would you use to learn better. I would do the following, roughly a couple of these together at a time ★ Practice leetcode questions, know the patterns of problems ★...
Wow. It's been over a year since I published my last essay on Plankton Valhalla. That was the second episode in a trilogy, and my work only got harder after that. I worked on the third piece on and off (mostly on) for the past 13 months, and I have finally published it today. It's titled Purpose From First...
Can you believe I am 15. I mean I'm not upset, but I'm just so excited to be 20.
Lately I’ve been reading Sean Goedecke’s essays on being a Staff+ engineer. His work (particularly Software engineering under the spotlight and It’s Not Your Codebase) is razor-sharp and feels painfully familiar to anyone in Big Tech. On paper, I fit the mold he describes: I’m a Senior Staff engineer at Google. Yet,...
This is one little productivity boost to make you a 10x Engineer! None of the popular AI blogs talk about this!!1! Problem statement: Make Claude Code emit a chime whenever it needs attention. diff Copy commit e668b387b6b34943143b046ad915effbd3945601 Author: Thiago Perrotta <{redacted}> Date: Thu Dec 4 02:33:11 2025...
My wife and I still haven’t figured where/when we want to retire yet, but sadly the U.S. seems to be a bleaker option with every passing day. I don’t think any country has really figured out their healthcare system well and those that had a decent stab at it seem to be hell bent on breaking it. For now, thankfully...

During my whole academic career—which includes the time I spent as a student from high school to doctorate, and now as a postdoctoral researcher—one of the problems I regularly struggled with is comparing myself to other people, especially to my colleagues. In high school, it used to be my classmates whom I was...
November 2025. Mayfield. My mystery trip into the Sussex Weald took us from Batemans to Mayfield, a village half an hour from the in-laws; a journey that Mrs RM made far too regularly when her mum drove my brother-in-law to the Catholic Boys School on Little Trodgers Lane when she couldn’t be trusted to be left home...
Now that the ramen site is live I have more time to write. I've reworked the outline and fixed some plot holes that I couldn't figure out the first time around. It always helps to step away from something for a while and come back to it to see what was wrong. After watching some other show to get more ideas I...
Sebenarnya, saya udah lupa kenapa milih beli tas ini. Kayaknya saat lagi kepingin tas emang suka begitu: it becomes a hyperfixation, niat banget beli, lalu setelah beli, udah deh lupa. Tas ini termasuk cepat periode kepinginnya: tiga bulan sejak masuk wishlist, saya membelinya. Buat saya ini termasuk cepat--biasanya...
When The Actor Has Too Much Range. I've only see Robert Pattinson on Twilight many years ago and now I'm curious to watch his other movies, this essay describes his performance really well. Why is this task so difficult for machines? Making an egg cracker? all the projects on this channel are so interesting to see,...
tonight, i managed to sit down for over an hour, and watch 4 episodes of anime with my brother. yes, a truly minumental (i'm going to keep that typo, i feel it quite perfectly encapsulates the ridiculousness of both that statement, and my feelings around it) achievement, indeed. but, relative to the last two months...
Mistral AI has published Mistral 3, the latest version of their open-weight language model. The models are available under the Apache 2.0 license and, according to their benchmarks, outperform DeepSeek’s recent models in several key areas … well, let’s see. According to the announcement, the focus seems to be on...
"Do they know it's Christmas?" Far (feat. Chino Moreno and Grady Avenell) A bunch of Sacramento bands put out a Christmas covers album to support a school music program and inadvertently created the greatest version of this song — mostly because it's not got Bono on it. I wish this supergroup had released more...
The most popular link last time was this list of things that aren't doing the thing, with this piece wondering if you are Actually Trying second. Somehow, the most insightful thing I have read/seen about contemporary social media usage is this Google Slides presentation. It's got over 400 slides but they're really...
It has been a while since I visited the rooftop of the P2 parking garage, waiting for hours for a military airplane to capture. So when I saw that a Luftwaffe Airbus A400M was scheduled to make an appearance in NUE, I gladly seized the chance.
Well the world is dark and cold, which means it's time to do something fun -- and in this case that something fun is go do a convention. This Saturday, December 6th, I'm going to be at UWEC GEEKcon at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Davies center. I'll have print copies of UnCONventional and the Mia Graves...
Went out with the coworkers to see the holiday train. There’s a section in the middle with a Santa pretender in a sleigh, and wow I bet that’s a cold ride. Reply via email
Quick announcement: I'll be visiting Japan in April, 2026 for about a month and will be on Honshu for most of the trip. Please email me recommendations. If you live nearby, let's have coffee? I've always been fascinated by old, multi-generational Japanese businesses. My leisure-watching on YouTube is usually a long...

Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to interview a lot of people, from some of my favorite musicians to directors to actors to activists to political figures. But the other day when I was in the grocery store and heard Eddie Murphy’s “Party All the Time” on the store’s intercom system, I was reminded of my very...
