I learned about an upcoming smartphone called the Lotus Diplomat from an article on NotebookCheck (HT to Pixy Misa at Ambient Irony). The Lotus Diplomat looks much like my old BlackBerry Classic, right down to the QWERTY keyboard. According to NoteBook Check, it will have a 5.3 inch display with a resolution of...
This article is not about Fizzy as a product, but rather about the decisions 37Signals make regarding how to launch their product. First off, they have been working very openly on this project for a long time now. The founder, Jason Fried, have made multiple videos along the way showing WIP stages. I've found them...
Advent of Code day 3. Back at it! Check out my full solution for day 3 at GitHub. The meat of today's problem is in finding the largest possible number in a list by combining two (part one) or twelve (part two) numbers in order. Let's look at an example: 234234234234278 If we were to find the largest possible number...
Day 43, What’s the last trip you took? Was it fun? Why or why not. The last trip I took was a bucket list trip, to the ‘House on the Rock’ in Wisconsin. Not to get too into it, but it’s a trip I’d wanted to take since I’d first heard of this tourist trap of a destination. To answer, was it fun? TL;DR, yes - it was...
I am reasonably confident to end up (fully) adopting jj in 2026. Baby steps though. Can I attempt to start to use jj to manage this blog? First, the usual: shell Copy brew install jj Second, a basic config file. git requires one too: shell Copy % cat ~/.config/jj/config.toml [user] name = "Thiago Perrotta" email =...
It is astonishing enough that we invented language, this vessel of thought that shapes what it contains, that we lifted it to our lips to sip the world and tell each other what we taste, what it is like to be alive in this particular sensorium. But then we passed it from our lips to our hands and gave it form so we...
After climbing down from the china wall the travelers found themselves in a disagreeable country, full of bogs and marshes and covered with tall, rank grass. It was difficult to walk without falling into muddy holes, for the grass was so thick that it hid them from sight. However, by carefully picking their way,...
Links of late… What counts as cheating in video games? What about in single-player video games? — Charles Joshua Horn explores these questions “Models of the mind and brain [in cognitive science] make use of idealized terms that have no counterpart in reality… Still [they’re] consistent with a version of scientific...

The December issues of Foofaraw Zine, Four-headed Foofaraw, and Little Letter of Nonsense are here! Of course, all stories will be published for free on the web throughout the month, but paid supporters receive a PDF/EPUB with all of the month's stories at the beginning of the month, along with a few other goodies,...
Perhaps I am being a judgemental asshole -- hey, it does happen; I am not always Mr supportive, full of sugar and cheer! I have a problem with businesses using free email addresses. So you want me to pay your hourly rate to fix my plumbing; order hand-made cakes; buy hand-crafted greetings cards; reserve my meat...
I managed twenty-eight weeks of notes until the habit crumbled in early October. Ever since, I’ve felt an urge to begin again, a missed opportunity slipping from my grasp, yet a call I’ve chosen to ignore. Mounting frustration made it ever easier to find distractions elsewhere. How is it already December? Perhaps...

Been doing some huge digital housekeeping lately. Most of it is due to my decision to finally move from Windows to a Linux distro. I ended up choosing Kubuntu, have it ready to go on a USB stick, but before that... Well, let's just say there was a bit of a domino effect. Because I wanted to move away from Windows, I...
As you all know, I don’t typically post about politics, but this post by my old friend Noah Millman: brilliantly illuminates the profound ethical failures — the abdications of ethical responsibility — that underlie many of the pathologies of our current moment: A view of power that sees it as incompatible with any...
Response to Waiting for... nothing? Waiting for life to start I relate quite a bit to the referenced post. After I got my first full time job, when my studies where winding down, I started asking my self the question "What now?". I got a chunk of cash each month and was still living at my parents — it felt like...
While snowed in over my long Thanksgiving weekend, I started thinking about the stuff online and how it interacts with the stuff in our brains. As requested by absolutely no one, behold: a framework for sorting the stuff on the Internet (and not on the Internet). 0: Slop "Slop" is the online stuff that is less than...
Over the last few days we learned that millions of people have been happily browsing the web with what amounts to a remote-controlled spyware agent sitting inside their browser. Not a zero-day in some obscure driver, not a sketchy EXE your cousin downloaded, but “Verified” and even “Featured” extensions from the...
I started working on this little project two months ago as a way to come up with some way to make at least one of my projects profitable. (The card shop is simply breaking even.) I was looking up the best ways to do this and so many suggestions resulted in things like "Become an influencer!", "Create a Substack!",...
Sleep Review, November 1st to November 2nd, 2025: Don’t even ask. Turns out that eating two little satsumas (or maybe mandarin oranges? Who knows, they label all of them as those and I don’t really know the differences.) just before going to bed give the body enough to do to keep it from falling asleep. A lot of...

KMCD Visualizing The Internet The theme for this months IndieWeb Carnival is where do you see the IndieWeb in 2030 and is hosted by V.H Belvadi. I thought this was a great excuse to yap about my politics, what I want to see in the world (and what I think will actually happen). So I am making three predictions. What...
This morning, while making my bed after breakfast, I finished listening to Goodnight Tokyo by Atsuhiro Yoshida (narrated by Kaipo Shwab, translated from Japanese by Haydn Trowell). It’s a series of stories that take place past midnight and before dawn in Tokyo, with new and recurring characters, most of whom do not...

Hank Green And The Fantastical Tales of God AIs AI Doomerism is a Decoy: Yet the supposed AI apocalypse remains science fiction. “A fantastical, adrenalizing ghost story is being used to hijack attention around what is the problem that regulation needs to solve,” Meredith Whittaker, a co-founder of the AI Now...

Some guidance, mostly for science and engineering students, on how to write a scientific paper or technical report. I've updated this article slightly since I wrote it thirty years ago, to deal with the rise in web-based publication. But, frankly, I think that similar standards should apply to electronic and print...
It’s Blogvent, day 3, where I blog daily in December! In case you missed it, there was a pretty bad security vulnerability recently with React Server Components. Luckily, the team updated everything, hooray, so people can upgrade their repositories and everything should be okay! That being said, when I went to...
I added a widget to every page here that lets anyone in the world immediately send me a notification. Type a message, hit send, and it’ll pop up on my phone, watch, and computer near instantly. Is this a good idea? No. But it’s a funny idea, and that’s all that counts these days. Scroll to the bottom of this page if...
Made it to December, yay. We got a good snow.Currently Listening: David Bowie “Girl Loves Me”Reply via email
In this entry, I interpret one of my favourite songs from the works of songmaker Thanasis Papakonstantinou. Andromeda is a joy to listen to even if you do not pay attention to the lyrics or, indeed, understand a word of Greek: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-H8uvGJBSkM. The instrumentation alone is awesome. This is...
"All I Want for Christmas is You" by My Chemical Romance My Chemical Romance are exactly the right sort of outlandish camp emo for this cover. Who else could do Mariah justice?! Thanks for reading this post via RSS! Let me know your thoughts by sending me an email: rss@thomasrigby.com.
I thought the do in in Scheme was a li’l hard to learn since the examples I could find was a li’l too fancy and clever. Just like a lot of my own documentation often is; sorry about that. Okay so this is so late already I feel like my next weeknotes will be about nothing. Don’t get me wrong, these notes are not mentioning what has happened during the last few days, but in the end most of it consists of worrying about publishing these notes in the first place. This was definitely not published on a...
Mr. Naroditsky is intent on making sure that readers of his Times column feel as if they are getting something out of it, just as he does on his social media channels. “I feel like that’s my God-given responsibility,” he said, laughing. “I’ve resisted the pull of using clickbait and appealing video titles. However...
