tl;dr: A meandering talk that reminds us of the risks of shipping unknown build time dependencies (as from npm), and also highlights how many services now have runtime third party service dependencies. These are very serious choices about the future of a project, and we can wonder how well we are making these...
Day 28, Do you have an /Interests page on your blog? What is on it or what would you put on one if you made it? I don’t! but I should write one up at some point. Interests are a little bit harder to think about then then simply saying what are your hobbies. I guess my main interests are solving scale issues....
Photo by Photo by Artan Sadiku Commentary about browsers and the features they support is sometimes pejorative towards pre-standardisation features. Given Apple's constriction of Mozilla's revenue stream and its own strategic under-funding of WebKit, this usually takes the form "Chromium just ships whatever it...
External stimuli is a guide, a tool to facilitate the path of free will. Accept that life will be unfair. If you don’t know this already then here it is… You are your worst enemy… and self-discovery is a personal journey. Free from the illusion of choice simply just to be. We all are, as we are. You have to do...
After reading – and enjoying a delicious coffee – I let my feet take me where they wanted to go. At the intersection of two roads on the Royal Mile – the heart of Old Town in Edinburgh – I turned my head right and thought about how long it had been since I had walked down the hill. The roads are narrow, but the...
Purpose To provide a structured self-diagnostic for romantic market positioning.Outputs: Preamble Before answering, define your dating pool: Who are the people you realistically meet and date (geography, culture, community, orientation)? Keep this in mind as you answer. Section 1: Market Reality Check (General Value...
Current read? Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams. It's about the early days of Facebook and boy it paints a picture. It's the worst kind of story arc, where optimism is replaced with defeat by unnecessary cruelty.
We now live in a throw-away society — there's no denying it. Fast fashion often dominates the news, but Tech is not squeaky-clean by any means. The current story is the imminent cessation of Windows 10 updates. Granted, your Windows 10 machine will not collapse in a useless heap when Microsoft stop supporting it....
This curious photograph – a silver print from a silver gelatine glass negative, dated 1885 – is titled 'The Apotheosis of Degas', and shows that artist sitting on the steps of a house in Dieppe surrounded by worshippers. Created with the help of a Dieppe portraitist and photographer, Walter Barnes, it is a parody of...
I’ve been thinking the new Meta Ray-Ban augmented reality glasses. Not because they failed onstage, which they absolutely did. Or that shortly after they received rave reviews from Victoria Song at The Verge and MKBHD, two of the most influential tech reviewers. My impression is that the hardware has improved but...
HappeningsHusband is on business trip, so it’s just me and the cats. That means I either drive myself to work (lazy) or take public transport (expensive). Eating alone is... fine though. Fruits, eggs, or instant noodles. (Okay, maybe skip the noodles.) This week has been full of meetings and appointments. Work...
In this 27-minute video, I elaborate on the most important quality of the philosopher: patience. I use the example of walking as one of the best ways each of us can practice the skill of being patient. Walking is nice because it is a commitment we cannot renege on midway: we simply have to finish it properly. It...
This week the Fed cut interest rates a quarter of a percent. The commentary is always about how this makes borrowing for consumers cheaper—lower mortgage rates, cheaper car loans, even a little relief on credit cards. Good news if you’re carrying debt. But no one talks about what a cut in interest rates does to...
I spent the summer using the fantastic binomial technique developed by Gianni Rodari — the beloved Italian writer whose stories lit up my Bulgarian childhood — as a creative prompt for poetry, part of the larger binomial two people co-create when their worlds touch each other in a meaningful way. Each week I’d be...
When you can do anything, there's always that impulse to do everything. Or, at least, everything you have the means to do, whether it makes sense or not. And yes, this ties into hVmark. One of my favorite video game franchises is Max Payne. In 2012, Max Payne 3 came out, and I thought it was a great final chapter....
Have you played Viewfinder yet? I picked it up last night on a whim and I wasn’t prepared for how brilliantly designed and creative and straight-up weird it all is. Here’s the gist: the game is about solving little puzzles by taking photographs and then “pasting” those objects into the real world. So a photo of a...
Ohhh this is where I got hocked up last time I read this book! The SI! The Silken myths! Is like getting on a rollercoaster ride and reaching the top before the thrill of the real ride begins. Ah! This is why I love Sci-fi! ??
The irony of the compliance division being audited for compliance was met with earnest explanation by the officers conducting the audit. "It's actually the most important form of compliance," was heard repeatedly as we walked around docking bays and spent far too much time in Shah's office answering questions that...
View out from Agios Georgios Beach on Naxos. Photograph by the author. I’ve just returned from a fortnight-long holiday in Greece—a long weekend in Athens, followed by ten days on the island of Naxos—and I’m feeling fully relaxed for the first time in as long as I can remember. Reading the interminably terrible news...
I used the app Poop Map for over 5 years, for the memes. A tale of perseverence and triumph.
Dear reader,This article kicks off a two-part series, where I challenge the ever-present argument of: ”Don’t put all your eggs in the same basket." Today, I will consider the question if you should avoid storing 2FA together with your passwords. The second part moves the focus to ecosystems, which have traditionally...
