I don't sit down to design systems with complexity as the point. But I've met some that engineers do. They'll never say it outright, but you can see it in their work. They write layers on top of layers, abstractions stacked on abstractions, and clever tricks that only they can explain. Complexity makes them feel...
I haven't really used Reddit in about 2 years, since reddit banned 3rd party apps. I used "Reddit Is Fun" for years, and hated the walled-garden Reddit was starting to create. I created a Lemmy account instead, which has since scratched the itch but I am considering deleting as well, as I mentioned in my blogpost...

In 2020, which seems like forever ago, I set out on a quest to type faster. I chose to do this for several reasons. First, I worked at the time as a writer, so typing faster meant I could get my assignments done more quickly. Second, it seemed like something I could dedicate myself to each day and see actual...
A fuzzy horde of bumble flower beetles has taken up residence in our herb garden, to such an extent that Amanda has all but abandoned the area. At least these are beneficial native pollinators and the plants appear unaffected. Still, what are they even doing in there? They’re so easy to spot—dark little shapes...
I was watching The Killing the other day, Kubrick's third feature film from 1956. Coming in at just 85 minutes, it’s a lean well-told story of a racetrack heist. But for all of the nonlinear storytelling, and noir aesthetics, and tangled snares of character desires, above all I was just taken with how good it looked.
Discussing the donation of material produced by one's body, such as blood and plasma, and my failed attempts at donating due to elevated heart rate.

In this ~30-minute video I walk through my mountains to check how things are after the wildfires of July (which I posted about here: https://protesilaos.com/news/2025-07-25-dealt-cyprus-wildfires/). The landscape is all ash, which stretches as far as the eye can see. I was hoping to find some new plants growing and...
What is happiness to you? What kind of person do you want to be when you grow up? And are you on track to becoming that person? Happiness [for me] is when someone acknowledges that it's okay for you to be here. I had that same dream again (Video Essay) i've been thinking about this question of the course of this...
There’s a mistake at the core of Apple’s new Liquid Glass hierarchy. It’s that because the new material introduced for the design is semi-transparent in a new way, it should go above content whenever possible, enriching the experience.I think this is untrue.I think this new material makes for a visually appealing...
Our common humanity properties are related to mind, feeling, and thinking. It appears that we distinguish ourselves from other beings through the way we use our minds to direct our feelings and thoughts, in various ways—whether to understand our surroundings or interpret our internal struggles. Ultimately, we seek...
