You may have noticed that the website is a little different. In the last iteration of this blog, I had decided to go with old faithful, WordPress, as the CMS backend. I hated every single moment of it. I can’t stand the editor UI, the plugins are just as clunky as they used to be, and it was overall just a bad time....
Here are a few of my snaps from our first two days in NZ. We are really loving it here. I would love to go hiking, the climate is perfect and the mountainous country beautiful. Not this trip though, this one's for the boys. H apparently asked to be kicked off the bridge Spartan style. The staff were very helpful. H...
Way back when, I worked in Scottsdale and had to drive forty minutes through the desert to and from work every day. And every day, I would save the apple...
I’ll start with a confession: I’m still quite new to the world of performance analysis and optimization.Monitoring how Rails apps behave in the real world, especially when it comes to database queries and SQL performance is something I’ve only recently started paying attention to after a deep dive on a recent client...
Psychologia szefaSzef to zawódAuthors: Wojciech Haman, Jerzy Gut I’ve read many books about leadership, but none quite like this one. The first two chapters followed a familiar pattern—a brief introduction to a manager’s responsibilities followed by guidance on planning your approach. Then came the third chapter:...
Heavily investing in plugins can be a bad thing for portability
One of the best gardening things is to have crocus bulbs in your lawn. They come up when the snow is thinning, and in years like this, they are out while we have a couple late snow storms. They are great, and just the colour that we need after what …
Last Saturday, my wife joined me on my weekly pilgrimage to NUE. The weather couldn't be better: +21ºC, clear skies, no wind. In other words, a rather unusual weather for mid-April in Germany. I was lucky to capture a 48-year-old Learjet 36A operated by Skyline Aviation (reg. N116MA), and then we feasted on bagels...
At work, I have to develop a service that has an API server, a web server that serves UI, and a Slack bot. This uses a database. I can either run it locally via podman, or connect to one which already runs in a development cluster. The web server requires the API server to provide some basic functionality, so even...
Leaders deliberately plan to develop products or deliver projects. However, they rarely pay similar attention to building trust. They see trust as “natural” or “part of being a decent human being.” What they don’t know is that if they take a few intentional steps, they can actually build trust more efficiently and...
As everyone in this generation, I have struggled with phone addiction and wasting time in apps for much of my teenage/adult life. I have setup my phone to strictly allow for only that which is productive and allow focused work. We can so easily forget that a smartphone is a pocket-sized computer, one which is more...
This note is inspired by my recent joyful experiences and Herman Martinus’ same-titled blog post. If you are living in Cologne or you are passing through and have a bit of time to kill: I would be delighted to have coffee with you. Lately, I have been having some great chats over coffee: sending KalkSpace buddy E....
One of my favourite sites on thie IndieWeb RainbowSpec focuses entirely on learning everything you could possibly want about the optics of rainbows. From the visible spectrum to double rainbows, and glories. Worth a good read!
