Candost's Blog

Candost

I used to think that reading would make me wise. One day, ten pages before finishing a book, I realized that I had read that same book before. At that point, my perspective on reading and, therefore, my life had changed. Now, I don’t care how many books I read; I take many notes, connect dots, and share what I’ve found on my blog and newsletter. I’m interested in many things at the same time (I’m a multipotentialite). On this blog, you’ll find me talking to about multiple aspects of life like leadership, software engineering, philosophy, psychology, software architecture & design, urban & industrial design, exercising, finance, Formula1 Racing, eating healthy, and many more. I’m a software engineering manager; that’s my current job. At home, I’m a writer and an avid reader. I rarely watch TV, movies or TV series. I don’t have any social media account (except Mastodon where I have automated posting of my new articles). Hence, I often miss the popular culture references in conversations. That’s alright. I don’t have FOMO; I embrace JOMO. I rarely read fictional books.

This post is about something I learned that helped me set my expectations in various situations right and position myself better in ambiguous situations. Since I became an engineering manager, I had more chances to observe what makes leaders better in chaotic situations. Be it an organizational change, shifting...
Managers have to shape their skills according to the team's needs and the constraints under which they operate. As each team has its unique context, it's quite challenging to put all managers into one career path. Moreover, many organizations lack clarity and direction about career development for managers. That's...
It's a race where a millisecond can change the result. It's a race where the engineering is living on its edge. It's a race in which excellence is not sought but required. And that starts from the entrance of the building and goes deep to the screws in the car. F1 is not only a race on the track but also a...
When I was in the tenth grade in high school, a man appeared next to our math teacher at the beginning of a class. I barely remembered his face then, but soon after introducing himself, I knew who he was as I had heard of him many times. He was one of the most successful graduates from our high-school, just...
When I try to delegate a job to people, I mostly consider their skills, where they want to go, the timeline of the work, the risk of the person failing, and how mature I am at that piece of work so I can help the person. I know there are more systematic ways and more things to consider. I mostly leaned on my biases...
How Strongly I Recommend It: 5/10 How Likely I Will Gift It: 7/10 Who Should Read It? Anyone who is pulled into too many directions in their lives and wants to change the situation and no idea how. Why should you read it? I read it because I felt the pressure to do everything, do everything right, and do whatever is...
Recently, I did some book shopping. All the books are related to work: leadership, coaching, behavioral psychology, and dealing with difficult conversations. However, neither the book's details nor how I am going to read them is what I want to talk about here. Today, I want to talk about why I buy books while many...
I was watching a video from Easy German (as I'm learning German), and they did a street interview and asked a question to the people: "How will the world look like in 2050?" While watching the video, I started thinking about how the world would be in 2050. But unlike the Easy German team's goal, I didn't want to...

I've been silent for a while because I was on a late-summer vacation. During this trip, I had the opportunity to reflect on my daily routines. Those who are close to me know that I have been making some changes in my life recently and trying to reduce my digital interactions. I have been writing regularly about...
Today marks a day for me. After days of manual labor and a lot of editing, I finally published all my notes in my Zettelkasten on my blog. You can find all of them here. It feels like it's opening years of work to the public. Although nobody will notice them, it's relieving to make them available for free to anyone....
Today, I've read Molly's great piece called, On Learning to Read Generously;. Here are my notes and thoughts. I am too generous with books. Instead of spending enough time with books, I spend more than a book deserves, especially for non-fiction books. So, I'm on the other side with Molly. Although I know there is...
