Candost's Blog

Candost

I used to think that reading would make me wise. One day, ten pages before finishing a book, I realized that I had read that same book before. At that point, my perspective on reading and, therefore, my life had changed. Now, I don’t care how many books I read; I take many notes, connect dots, and share what I’ve found on my blog and newsletter. I’m interested in many things at the same time (I’m a multipotentialite). On this blog, you’ll find me talking to about multiple aspects of life like leadership, software engineering, philosophy, psychology, software architecture & design, urban & industrial design, exercising, finance, Formula1 Racing, eating healthy, and many more. I’m a software engineering manager; that’s my current job. At home, I’m a writer and an avid reader. I rarely watch TV, movies or TV series. I don’t have any social media account (except Mastodon where I have automated posting of my new articles). Hence, I often miss the popular culture references in conversations. That’s alright. I don’t have FOMO; I embrace JOMO. I rarely read fictional books.

Easy is the enemy of good. We all opt-in for the easy, all the time. The learning comes from chasing the simple, not easy. Making things simple is difficult. That’s why simple things are almost always great. Reply via email | Reply via Mastodon | Comment
For investors as a whole, returns decrease as motion increases. The motion means the intermediaries win more as they take fees, taxes, and deduct costs from shareholders' value. Related Note(s): This is the mathematical proof of minimizing costs and trading. More trading = more motion = fewer returns. Capitalism...
Minimizing costs and trading frequency increases the chances of earning a fair share of the market. Similar to gambling's motto of "house always wins," financial intermediaries make a lot of money while others are investing. Reducing these costs increases the chances of earning higher shares from the market. Related...
Thanks to the growth, productivity, resourcefulness, and innovation of corporations, capitalism creates wealth—a positive-sum game for its owners. Capitalism is a provider for wealth accumulation and the backbone of innovation due to financial investments. Unlike zero-sum games, where one person's gain is another's...
I consistently receive requests from the team to reduce tech debt. Every time, I say similar things. I want to share them here. As a software engineer, you have more power than you think. When you're coding for a new feature, you have the power to refactor a specific part of the codebase. You don't need any...
It's contradictory to sit alone in a café. It's against the reason cafés exist. They are designed as meeting spaces. There is no table with a single chair. Even the ones placed right by the window with high seating are big tables with many chairs. Cafés are community spaces. Most go there to see their loved ones,...
In the last Mediations, I discussed economics, in particular, how better technology, processes and infrastructure increase efficiency and effectiveness. However, economics alone can’t cover all six pillars of socio-technical systems. I also realized that in the last issue, I made socio-technical systems theory look...
Software systems have become incredibly complex over the last decade(s), along with the organizations that build them. As a result, increasing an organization’s efficiency and effectiveness became as challenging as developing a software product. A problem I see is people spending a lot of energy and time learning...
I have now added Ko-fi support to my blog. I am still unsure about this, but I would like to experiment. I aimed to place it in the least intrusive place possible: at the end of the post. I don't know how it will conflict with the two action buttons I have there. I still prefer people commenting on the post instead...
In the last five to six years, I've been looking for a grand goal in life. My search yielded nothing. The more I looked, the more it concealed. Then I stopped and turned around to look at what had happened so far. Something appeared out of nowhere. This retrospective look didn't reveal the meaning of life to me, but...
Back in the late 90s, the Internet wasn’t readily available in my hometown. As it was costly, my parents couldn’t afford it. At that time, blogs were the TikTok or Instagram of today. By the time the Internet became accessible, social media websites like Facebook and Twitter were in full swing. Naturally, I caught...
I’ve been thinking about how the definition of software engineering has been changing with AI, as everyone is expected to do more. An engineering manager used to be the person focused on the team’s strategy, developing people’s skills, hiring, project management, etc.. They were deep into meetings and were the...
