So, remember last Weeknote when I said I changed mailing list providers? I just did it again. The one I used for the previous mailing had so many ads in it, it ruined the newsletter. I took a slightly nerdier route to get a new one set up that should look nice and clean, no ads. September’s been a busy month with...
This is a memoir of Haruki Murakami, I mentioned about in the previous book post. Here the author describes his journey of becoming a novelist from a bar owner and how sport activities, especially running, helped him in doing so. He became a serious long distance runner in his early thirties while prior to that time...
Work has been really draining lately. It’s not the quantity of work so much, though there has been a lot of it, but more so it’s the nature of the work that’s the challenge. Trying to promote someone, and deciding not to promote others who strongly deserve it but who we just don’t have budget for. They’re going to...
It’s the one to the right. But it didn’t work! It’s a mystery. Can you pinpoint the subtle problem? It’s subtle! The most shocking thing is that the bulb was made in Germany (a company called Ledvance).
Exactly on this day, September 25 2001, Apple shipped version 10.1 of their OS X operating system. The one they later would rename to macOS. Exactly twenty-five years ago today. Within all their fancy release presentations and videos there are barely no mentions of curl. In their technical notes page, there is just...
These are comments I wrote to a friend in the summer of 2022. They were reading Lao Zi’s Dao De Jing (Tao Te Ching is an alternative spelling) at the time in the hope of making sense of their own life’s woes. This friend is of East Asian background, while I am Greek by blood and, as you may have noticed the more...
On his fascinating and long-running Windows dev blog The Old New Thing, Raymond Chen writes about the story of scrollbar right-click menus: Windows 2000 added a right-click menu to the scroll bar. This menu gave you four options that matched existing mouse operations, two operations that matched existing keyboard...
OverviewThis week’s urgent queue is crowded with systems that control access to something larger than themselves. Attackers are exploiting F5 and Check Point access gateways, Arista’s SD-WAN orchestrator, SharePoint, TeamCity, and managed switches. CISA’s newest additions bring WSO2 API infrastructure and Adobe...
September 2026. Shireoaks. Notts. The new Good Beer Guide has dropped (ugh); it would have been poetic to blame my injury on the descent of this massive brick of a book (forgot to mention that last post), but it arrived while I was in Dewsbury and flattened Mrs RM instead. Having made every effort to limit the walk...
Short announcement: I've decided to replace Tuulikki with Tyytikki as the "default" name for the daughter of Tapio forest goddess. I will slowly be editing pages to reflect that. The reason for this is because I believe Tyytikki is closer to the possible "original" (questionable choice of words) form (Lyytikki or...
A couple1 of people have asked what my process is for developing the various Pure Commons apps. This comes after I've mentioned a couple of times that I've released a feature I've been working on for months. So I thought I'd write a quick post that explains how I do it, so I can refer people to it if/when they ask...
I have argued that if we someday create AI persons -- that is, AI systems with genuinely rich conscious experiences, fully deserving of equal rights with ordinary humans -- then we should not design them to deferentially serve us, even if serving us makes them happy. We should design them instead as our...
I had hoped to post this review back in July; alas, my brain made a different decision, and for the second time this year, I found myself unable to read new-to-me books, or to write about…well, anything. Things are looking up for the moment, so here I am, back with my Game Changers/Heated Rivalry nonsense. Beware:...
Read Time Has No Memory now! This may be a little inside baseball, but I believe you’ve done a good deal of “contract work” yourself—do you see yourself in the main character at all?I mean, there’s contract work and then there’s CONTRACT WORK. I’ve done the former, but you know, none of the latter. I’ve always been...
I found a funky little used bookstore in my hometown recently. It might be my new favorite. There's a big sci-fi section which has a great selection of those mass market paperbacks I love so much. Usually on my first round through a bookstore I'll make a point not to consult the to-read list on my phone. Instead,...
“The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way,” William Blake wrote in his most passionate letter. “As a man is, so he sees.” Because we are social apes who descended from the trees and invented language to tell each other what we see, saying is a way...
Whenever a new version of macOS drops, I find myself archiving the new app icons for my macOS icon gallery. In the past, the work to do this was a bit tedious. First, I’d find the app in the “Applications” folder (or elsewhere on the Mac), right click and choose “Get Info”: Right-click the app icon in the Get Info...
When it comes to video games, if there is one era that I missed out on (besides the one before my birth) it is the 32-bit era. Much about that period I could only glean from magazines, which I read rather frequently. My brother had a friend that came over once with a PlayStation and played Grand Turismo and a little...
Link sharing is a fundamental piece of the IndieWeb. It's a kindness we show to other bloggers and sites. We share things we find good or interesting so that others may enjoy them, and it provides the author a bit more reach. I notice there are two main ways people tend to share links. The first is as link dump...
Now that I'm into writing fiction, I started to think about what I used to write when I was a child or teen, and realized that I didn't write anything that wasn't for homework. I questioned myself. Was it an activity that out of the blue I started to like?, because I even didn't like to play with toys that needed...

Sebastian Thrun, a computer scientist, entrepreneur, and adjunct professor at Stanford University (whose projects have included Waymo, Google X, Google Street View, and more) has launched a study to evaluate “the capabilities and limitations of AI systems for writing English-language philosophy.” Called...
Today’s interview is the first I have yet conducted with a professional blogger. I’m not going to assume anything about what you picture when I say that! But I hope that from now on, when you imagine someone who has made a career and vocation of writing for the web, your mind leaps to Janice, creator of The Vivienne...
In one of my earlier blog posts, I mentioned that I have become more routine, more protective of my time, and indirectly more productive since becoming a parent. That continues. I totally get how Parvathy feels in this video. I am still not a proper morning person. I wake up around 6 AM. That said, I pay close...
First off, I assume this is some anti bot tactic. I don't mind typing in the link and title but the exact formatting for the date is kind of a pain. Anyway, I've been looking for the versions of shows I used to watch back in high school. Most anime now on streaming services has been re-dubbed to be a closer match to...
Lately I’ve been using the +”%y-%V” date format a lot and I wanted a weekday format to optionally append to that (although most of the time the weekly granularity is enough) and landed on MTWRFSU for odd weeks and mtfwrsu for even weeks. I found online that some schools and hospitals use that system for scheduling....
Baseball I got really into baseball this year. I’ve always been a (very) casual baseball fan, but this year I decided to really follow the season. There are lots of fun story lines to follow, from Shohei Ohtani being the best baseball player ever, to Jacob Miziorowski crazy fastballs, to the White Sox making...
A block north and a day later from the previous shot, the setting sun shines through the low lying clouds along the Esplanade in Redondo Beach. 前の写真から1ブロック北、1日後。レドンド・ビーチのエスプラネード沿いで、低く垂れ込めた雲の間から夕日が差し込んでいる。
Music in the streaming age is weightless. It reaches you through the aether from servers thousands of miles away into whatever speaker happens to be nearby. It seems almost infinite, is completely free of friction, and incredibly easy to take for granted. I recently bought a record player and my first three records,...
Introduction An occasional collection of things I've recently found on the Internet and added to my bookmarks. Weird little guys of FOSS As the name says: a collection of "weird little guys" of the FOSS and adjacent worlds. Massively subjective, of course, but I don't think I've seen one (that I know of) that I...
2026-09-25Hello!Ahead of the Vox Populi exhibition titled "An Endless Meeting: Collective Process, Artistic Labor, and the Politics of Working Together", I took the portrait of one of the artists through almost pure coincidence.I figured I might as well upload this portrait to Wikimedia Commons now that I have the...
Went down this rabbit hole during lunch: The Guardian: Our lives and identities have moved online - and it's driving us insane Eugene Healey: Post-luxury status symbol #1: connected privacy The New Yorker: it's cool to have no followers now I have long said my hidden superpower is my ability to predict trends. I...
I had no idea that this existed. We use Revolution EHR, and in the optic nerve section there is a dropdown menu for ‘disc type’. The choices are I - IV. I had no idea what it was for, so I checked with Open Evidence. Disc types I–V refer to the Hitchings and Spaeth (1976) morphological classification of the...
Last edited 7 minutes ago. If you have the answer, please send me a letter, I greatly appreciate it. If you wanna remain anonymous or send me a cute doodle, you can head to my straw.page. And if you ask me if I spent a good hour of my afternoon tweaking with that page instead of facing my problems, you'd be...
What song do you associate with the current season? It does not always rain in Scotland. It’s a myth. But when it does it can be days of grey skies, from a constant smirr to a torrential downpour. Many memories of drizzle drenched days, as the temperature falls, the leaves turn and fall, and minds think ahead to...
The definitive test for generative AIs: which creates the most accurate ass. There are several models available and you can read the prompt. Don’t forget to also evaluate the reaction of the buttock to the pat. Tip from Renan, who refused to answer where the hell he found this.
Born on this day in 1683 was the great French composer (and music theorist) Jean-Philippe Rameau. His father was an organist in Dijon, and Jean-Philippe was taught music before he could read or write. It wasn't until he was nearly 50 that he began to compose the extraordinary operas for which he is best remembered...
