I've been at home in England for a little over a week now and it's about time I talked about Germany. My longer reflection will come later, but for now I wanted to celebrate my last fun couple weeks. I will miss the people I got to know... but most of all, I will miss my church. It's been the study basis for me...
this video about the album without you i'm nothing by placebo is so good. it's definitely worth watching.
What could have been a fun five-hour-long focused exploration of an interesting mechanic is a fifty-hour love letter from Kojima, to Kojima. That verdict took a handsome few hours in post-apocalyptic America this year. What I uncovered is an incongruous collage of an action game, a modernized QWOP, and exceedingly...
With ever-changing devices, browsers, operating systems, form factors, specifications, personal preferences, tooling, and corporate interests, the web is in a constant state of flux. As a result, so is the HTML we write. For every line of the HTML specification itself that has changed since the language’s inception,...
I do something similar, especially with writing. In seventh grade, for instance, my teacher accused me of plaigarism because, when I wrote book reports, my writing style would take on elements of the author’s. She and my mother (also a writing teacher) poured over the source material and never found the alleged...
After enduring years of malfunctioning products, Wile E. Coyote teams up with a local personal injury attorney to take on ACME, the manufacturer of anything and everything used by the Looney Tunes characters. Remember “Space Jam”? While this is not as memorable, it does a great job of blending the real world and the...
The kerfuffle, abbreviated: DHH appears to leaning pretty far to the right when it comes to … oh you know, white supremacy and stuff. Neat. There was a DHH quote on the Neovim website. Some people objected to it, and the lead Neovim maintainer didn’t take it well. I’m now seeing posts like these: tea’s Switching...
I know, I know. I’m supposed to say iPod’s click wheel, or the Western Electric 500 rotary dial, or maybe the first Nest. But, have you ever played Super Sprint? It was Super Sprint that had the first amazing rotary controller I’ve ever used, and the whole cabinet design told you the game was very well aware of...
There has been quite the uptick in “AI” labs’ claims of their LLMs “solving complex math problems”. I wondered why that is, especially given that LLMs are not exactly built for the kind of rigor that proving mathematical theorems requires. There’s a whole bunch of – really hard – math problems out there looking for...
Restaurants, please don’t make halloumi, paneer, “grilloumi” or similar hard cheeses be your “vegetarian” option because they are almost twice as bad for the climate as even pork is (and pork is already super bad). I know I come across as a killjoy nag on this doomposting blog but I don’t fault any one consumer for...
A rare summer shower. It was still raining when I arrived at the Redondo Beach Pier to take this photo. Unusual conditions sometimes yield spectacular shows in the sky.
(to remind myself) By Wendell Berry August 5, 1934 – August 31, 2026 i Make a place to sit down. Sit down. Be quiet. You must depend upon affection, reading, knowledge, skill—more of each than you have—inspiration, work, growing older, patience, for patience joins time to eternity. Any readers who like your poems,...
At the start of this year, I was showing my dad a video of me and my (new friend at that point) best friend singing together. I was so excited that I had found another girl who loved to sing.
If you follow me on Twitter, or read this blog, you have noticed that I went from being generally optimistic and excited about AI to being extremely concerned. And I thought, I should explain why I changed my mind. Each section of this post is about some aspect of AI where my views shifted. I begin each section by...

Writing a proper intentional short story is quite the journey itself. After days of brainstorming and mind maps, just like that, during a meeting at work, a voice whispered and did not shut up. Now I write and write, and like magic, it came to me. I just hope I can do it justice.#writing #storiesThank you for...
September 7, 2026 I just read Winnie Lim’s post, Running a Personal Website Is Not Fun Anymore. She writes about the constant barrage of bots, crawlers, and attacks that have made running her personal website a lot less fun. Her post prompted me to take a look at the firewall traffic for my own site. I’m hosted on...
There have been several posts on here lately lecturing people on how to write and on literacy.1 I’m throwing my own dumb opinion into the fire here and saying: cut it out. Stop that. Mind your own business! There is no “correct” way to write.2 These are personal blogs with people’s own thoughts. People are...
Weekly cleaning and home improvement series, with some thoughts in between. So, this post is no longer valid. Yesterday, my boss texted me to tell me I don't need to work Monday and Tuesday this week. I'm still waiting for my schedule, but it's not arrived yet. Thus, Monday cleaning will commence. Tomorrow, I'm...

“Whatever inspiration is, it’s born from a continuous ‘I don’t know,'” the Polish poet Wisława Szymborska observed in her magnificent Nobel Prize acceptance speech. But despite all we know about the power of liminality and threshold states, we yearn for a firm foothold on one side of every blurry line and move...
Re:Paper is a pet project where I get to read interesting papers from the past and share my thoughts/impressions. It's not too dissimilar to book reviews, except for papers. Or paper-like things (a talk that gets published, an essay from an academic, etc.) For 003, I have The Political Uses of Madness from Daniel...
On a traffic island at Hudson and Bank Streets is a small dark plaque. Obscured by tree branches, it’s a low-key memorial to a 31-year-old man killed in the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. “In Memory of David Harlow Rice, World Trade Center II,” it reads, with Rice’s birth date and “9-11-01” embossed in bronze....
A weird crime cinema, at least for modern times, amalgamating criminal mind with Samurai code. That's exactly the theme of the movie. A professional killer, alias Ghost Dog, strictly follows Samurai code. He is a big fan of Japanese culture, and an avid reader who repeatedly quote many times from a book Hagakure—a...
Destroy a range of ZFS snapshots with a single command When you have a number of old ZFS snapshots to destroy, it can be useful to see if you can delete a complete range. A range of snapshots can be destroyed with a single command. This is what the man page says: An inclusive range of snapshots may be specified by...
Pick a song from an artist or band that’s had the biggest impact on your life. Queen were my first love. Finding their albums in my parents record collection was like finding a rare jewel. Mostly because they spanned the time of my awakening to pop/rock music so I had a contemporary view of them (Radio GaGa) to play...
Labor Day brings to mind many things for me. I think of the ways this holiday has changed. In my lifetime, Labor Day signaled a coming end to the intense heat, with only a week or two left. But in our time of planetary climate upheaval, no longer.Labor Day has also signaled fashion choices, like when to put away...
A week from today I have the big quarterly checkup at the hospital again, and that had me really nervous this morning. I don’t like to dwell on those feelings. Thankfully, I’ve learned to deal with them: follow my two step plan to free myself of those jitters. Step 1 - find calm I just got up, walked to the...
D2 Diagrams Lives OnOne of my favorite open source tools, D2: Declarative Diagramming, is now under Hack Club! This makes D2 a fully open source and non-profit project. Thank you Alex for making this awesome tool available for everyone in the long run. I’m really thrilled because there was some concern about whether...
Late summer in Germany is back to normal, following the sweltering heat of the last three months. A pleasant 26 degrees Celsius and already cool nights of around 14 degrees. We’re prepared for anything, though, and I will shed a tear or two in memory of the heat. I’m a sun-lover through and through. Thomas really...
Writing for The Guardian, Jon Henley notes that Europe’s centre fears nationalist wave after AfD victory but only has itself to blame. Jon explains how AfD’s win in Saxony-Anhalt should not be overstated yet it still is a telltale sign of things to come. The trends are there and they are painting a clear picture....
Here’s some comics I’ve read over the past week. I’ve enjoyed several comics written by Matt Fraction, so I gave this a go — even though I’ve barely read any Iron Man comics since I was… hm… I may actually never have been reading Iron Man comics ever? I mean, I read Avengers and stuff, but never the Iron Man title....
Health data is my biggest interest within data protection law. If my health would permit it, I would work in a hospital or pharmacy. I even originally set out to complete my traineeship in medical documentation at a hospital! It fell through because I would have had to move to another state. Alas, now I don't work...
On the subject of less than faithful book-to-film adaptations, it sounds like a sequel to 2011’s the Adventures of Tintin might be on the way. To be precise, New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson, who collaborated with Steve Spielberg to make the 2011 film, said, earlier this year, he was writing a screenplay for a...
Do you know what the hardest thing to do on earth is? Quantum physics? No. Solving world hunger? Nope. Getting Trump impeached? Nah. It's climbing the stairs on leg day! 🦵🏼 Thanks for reading this post via RSS. RSS is ace, and so are you. ❤️ You can reply to this post by email, or leave a comment.
Like any good IndieWeb nerd, I post my reviews on my website first, then syndicate those to all the places. Justin is someone I follow, and we both use our websites in pretty similar ways, with goals that seem to line up. I noticed that we both reviewed Silo S3 and syndicated both of our posts to Mastodon. Here is...
2026-09-07Hello! I've never talked about movies on this website, have I?Along with the TV shows Jet Lag and Taskmaster, I'm watching movies at home while I recover from an illness. The last movie I remember watching in the theater was one of the Sonic movie sequels (I think it was Sonic 2, but it could have been...
Camping at Blackwater Falls State Park 2026 Edition Trip: 62 Nights: 203-205 For Labor Day weekend we returned to Blackwater Falls State Park in Davis, WV. This is my 4th trip to Davis in the last 15 odd years. I really love the Canaan Valley region of West Virginia. It's a little oasis of reasonableness in a state...
For reasons, I ended up watching season 1 of “Off Campus”. Watcher beware: loss of a parent to cancer (in the past); rape drugs, rape off-screen, and references to rape culture on-screen; drinking; domestic violence; abusive parent; misogyny, both societal and internalized; full frontal nudity, various characters....
September 2026. Sheffield to Northampton. Yes ! I’m alive, just back from four (4) days without internet (unless you stand in a field of sheep in Cranborne Chase). Lots of exciting music reviews from End of the Road ’26 to come, but first, and most excitingly, a night in the western suburbs of Northampton. Calm...
See Spring Creek, Arizona Summers in the Phoenix area are brutal. It is the Sonoran Desert, so of course the daytime temperatures are extremely high. Think 110-115 degrees. But it is the "low" temps that erode resolve. It isn't unusual for the coolest part of the morning to register in the upper 80's, or low 90's....
There's a common refrain on Bluesky and Mastodon: if you're on Twitter/X, and especially if you're paying for premium1, then you're complicit in whatever Elon Musk does. You're funding the far right. You're a fascist sympathiser, even. I totally get why people say this, but I don't agree.Without question there's a...
Some of my mother’s ashes are in a little cove in a little lake nearby. In the summer, I sometimes take a kayak out for a visit. No matter what is on my mind, no matter what is troubling me, I always get the same answer. “Have faith.” Send me email about this post
