Detail from the first life-drawing from today’s session I did my last life-drawing session of July earlier today, making a total of four sessions. I’ve got another life-drawing session booked for tomorrow afternoon. Thirty minute drawing with Sanguine pencil & Conté crayons I’ll probably not keep up with four...
Anastasia has been very vocal lately, much more than usual, and it’s been worrying us. She’s been yeowling a lot at night, and both before and after using her litter box, and has been especially clingy, which is a lot given I usually call her my Velcro Cat. So I scheduled an appointment to get some blood work done...
You can proofread a million times, but the moment you hit publish, every single error shows it’s rear.
Quiero...
This was previously published on Writer's Digest. The column instructed us to be a clueless literary agent. This was accepted, and I was so happy my satire was accepted, I bragged about it to the grass and to gravity itself. The rejection letter. Dear Mr. Snicket, I am writing to you from the comfort of my office...
TL;DRWhy I think software development is starting to feel a little more like conducting an orchestra. There’s a shift happening in software development that I don’t think we’re talking about clearly enough. For the last couple of years we’ve framed AI as a productivity tool. How much faster can it write code? How...
I've updated Rogallo to v1.4.0. The main change in this release is to how server certificates are handled, which in turn should solve a bit of friction Rogallo had when using some popular Gemini capsules. Until now, Rogallo simply used a TOFU approach for all capsules it encountered. In part, this was because that's...
♠ Problem statement: a newly created Route 53 record resolved through public DNS, but Chrome Brave and macOS still returned DNS_PROBE_POSSIBLE. It smells like a DNS caching issue. Flushing mDNSResponder did nothing though. The system resolver was Tailscale’s local DNS proxy, so I asked that resolver rather than...
A hotel manager once told a marathoner he could run a six-minute mile. The marathoner — who had raced twenty-six miles at 7:35 pace and knew exactly what a six-minute mile costs a body — called bullshit. The manager didn’t retreat to “well, in high school.” He doubled down. Nothing about that exchange makes sense if...

Software is hard. I’m getting close to 50. Tech has developed a new religion. The power dynamics have shifted, yet again. I asked myself in the last two years, what does work look like? What does it look like for me? I’d been working as a creative director and product designer at a VC firm, and as a founding...
This is where I live. No, sorry, this is near where I live, in Cornwall. I live in a house, like most people. About 5 miles away from here. Not on a bench on the clifftops overlooking the sea. Although I could easily be persuaded, if I was allowed to build a simple hut where this bench is and move into that. Until...
img { display: inline-block; } rose The break from everything went well. I'm enjoying the mindset shift it brought, and am appreciating that I'm currently putting my focus elsewhere; on my comfort, my rest, my play, my relationships, instead of being highly ambitious in so much else. I've also gotten rid of some...
Read Too Many Mystics now!Can you tell us a little bit about your Superworld Universe and how this ties into it? When my four children were small and we’d go on long trips in the car, I’d tell them stories about them being superheroes. In one story, they were thrust into a parallel Earth where most people were...
Sam from TheTangentSpace published a post a few days ago about his participation in the Blaugust Festival Of Blogging. I remember this from seeing the #blaugust hashtag in previous years, but I never participated, so I thought this year is a good time to change that! Sadly the founder of the challenge, Belghast,...
On Friday I finished Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Atmosphere, a sapphic romance set during the early days of the Shuttle program, and really enjoyed it. In addition to the obvious reasons (space! lesbians!), the story’s focus on an unconventional motherhood hit both Eryn and me right in the feels. #atmosphere #books #NASA...
David Berman, Fellow Emeritus of Trinity College Dublin, has died. Professor Berman was known for his work on the philosophy of George Berkeley, Irish philosophy, and philosophy of religion. He is the author of A History of Atheism in Britain: From Hobbes to Russell (1988), George Berkeley: Idealism and the Man...
So many links in one post. I ended up going down all kinds of rabbit holes off the back of this single post (also the second time I've linked to Sal's blog today 🙃). I discovered Coyote's blog, and Sylvia's. So went ahead and read some of their posts. I was already aware of Brennan's fantastic blog, but it's a great...
July has been left behind, Mexico didn’t make it further in the World Cup, but at least Spain won instead of Argentina. It does seem like the U-20 team is doing pretty well in the CONCACAF Championship though! group leaders and ready for quarter finals. Back to July, I am rather impressed with the amount of gaming...
From Alex’s post, The Productivity Mirage (HN discussion here): I remember this legendary software engineer at Facebook. His name is Bob. Bob is a prolific engineer – he was responsible for shipping Facebook Groups (among other things). He was also a hackathon legend, delivering hit after hit. At the time I was a...
I finally reached Level 5 on Dreaming Spanish (600-ish hours), and to celebrate, here's a list of some Spanish words I like at the moment: Conquistar This word means exactly what you think it means, however it's used in place of "winning someone over." For example, in TV shows whenever characters talk about wooing...

Turning a Raspberry Pi 5 into an LLM agent gateway with Hermes, using a Telegram bot as the chat interface and persistent memories for personal-assistant and research tasks.
I originally planned to host an HTML day celebration and mini-workshop for HTML Day: https://pan.rent/@tommi/116755244186938844 Unfortunately, I had too many things on my plate and I could not do it. If I was in Rotterdam (where Sevgi is hosting a super cool HTML event btw), I would have definitely made something up...
Sometimes, I have a really strong urge to write a small, quick poem. And sometimes, I just find the right inspiration, as in the following case, on a night when I wanted to play with words but my window and the night outside felt dull: “Usually I like riding on trains, especially at night, with the lights on and the...
Having fun with Chicken Scheme Switch from Guile Scheme to Chicken Scheme Lately have been dabbling in Guile Scheme. Guile Scheme is very fast and since is it the main development environment for Guix, its popularity is rising. I tried Chicken Scheme because it can create a stand-alone executable. This means that...
In about 40 minutes from now I will do a live stream with Christian Arzu from the @linkarzu channel on YouTube. The video will be recorded. The topic of our meeting revolves around how Christian uses NeoVim and Kitty to handle sessions and write fleeting thoughts. Then we will try to do something along those lines...
Quoted Celebrating the nation's strengths, beauty for the big 2-5-0 by Letters to the Editor (Chicago Sun-Times) British Gen. Charles Cornwallis surrendered to the rebels after the Battle of Yorktown on Oct. 19, 1781. But, critically, the Treaty of Paris — granting independence to the new nation of former colonies —...
And with slowly I mean slowly to the point where it actually not bothering me enough to take action immediatly… Did you ever had that? A piece of Hardware slowly losing it’s reliability but refuses to die properly. It just dies enough to bother but not fully so you actually need to spend money and solve it. Maybe...
After years of loyal user of Standard Notes, I have decided to migrate to Obsidian. Just to be fair, this decision is not born out of dissatisfaction with Standard Notes as product. It remains solid, reliable and privacy respecting tool that has served me exceptionally well. A brief overview Standard Notes is a...
July 2026. Sheffield. I drove down with the boys to see Dad a week ago, and back the same day. Dad didn’t recognise us, but was enjoying the company and the fishcakes, which is what matters. Now Sunnyside is sold I’ve no need to stay in Waterbeach, and the boys have no fondness for Cambridge, though I can’t imagine...

Once, I spent a year walking Brooklyn’s historic Green-Wood Cemetery daily, winding between the marble tombs engulfed by tree-roots and emblazoned with the surnames of the dead, each followed by a full stop to demarcate the terminus of life. It hovers there, so sure of itself, this punctuational emblem of an...
In the early days of high school, I knew what I wanted to do as a job. I had a hobby, though, and figured that it could be developed into a type of thing I would do on the side. You see, like most 15-year-olds, my taste in music was so much better than yours or anyone else’s, that I regarded my opinion on the matter...
Today is Send a Friend a Webmention Day! Webmentions are a way to make posting on your own website more social, and I think they're pretty neat. I have a page with a bunch of info about setting them up on your site — the basics are pretty straightforward! Today I'm mentioning Joe, Naty, Ross, and Jo. They all have...
A “record” El Niño event, presently wreaking havoc in the northern hemisphere, is expected to lead to an excessively warm and dry spring in Australia, and, no doubt, other regions south of the equator. We’ve barely had a winter in my part of the world this year. To be sure, there’s been one or two cooler days, and...

2026-07-31Hello! I should have expected this.I'm lucky that bugs didn't transmit any diseases into me, but the summer season where I live brings itching mosquitoes and the annoying flies. The bugs even enter my house, attacking the kitchen pantry and laying eggs. I don't see them come in, so I can only assume there's...
OverviewThis week put control planes and automation under pressure from both sides. Attackers abused firewall management, webmail, collaboration tools, exposed industrial controllers, software dependencies, and increasingly capable AI workflows, while defenders received several emergency-grade patches for the...
“Wake up, woman!” The earth dropped away in a whirl of colour and I tumbled through a blanket of clouds. Only darkness remained. I jolted up and stared into my dark bedroom, “Stupid dream, waking me up like this!” A soft voice said, “Hello.” I sang, “My name is Elder Price,” because ever since seeing The Book of...
Happy 150th birthday (yesterday) to my great-grandfather Andrew. He was born in Poland 99 years before I was born and died here in the US 20 years before I came into the world. He seems like he would have been an interesting guy to know. Look at that picture! Interestingly, that shot was taken on the farm he...
Read on the website: I dedicated this July to not using my laptop (and definitely not watching YouTube!) It’s a tentative win!
Blaugust 2026 It’s August already! The month of Blaugust starts again. I’ve been debating a bit if I would join again or not this year—just like last year. But before I get into that, Blaugust is a month-long event that takes place each August which focuses on blogging primarily (…) The goal is to stoke the fires of...
Contra the previous post, just spotted this “Same settings, new look!” callout in Firefox, on a page I have never visited before, talking about a feature I have never used: I mentioned this once – when you get someplace new, everything is new. This redesign announcement’s conditions were engineered poorly, because...

It’s been a hot minute. Time for a Barry update! Last week we spent some time by the lake at a rental property. Lots of relaxing and a few activities. While I mainly used the PDF reader integrated into Firefox on Android to view PDFs on my phone so far, I now have a new favorite PDF reader. What bugged me about the reader in Firefox was especially the performance when viewing big PDFs like newspapers. It always took a second or so to rerender when zooming or going...
Reading Kali’s post about ownership triggered me to write this post about my memories of owning games and other types of media in my lifetime. The future is bleak. GamesGrowing up, I was a video game addict. Browsing the aisles lined with game cartridges and discs at GameSpot and Toys “R” Us will always be in my...
Recently I gave two presentations in quick succession to the Dutch Network of Public Service Providers and the Dutch Advisory Council for Science, Technology and Innovation about AI. In these two different and brief presentations, I hoped to share some insights that would be useful to the people currently at the...
Was hanging out on the beach tonight and saw a SpaceX rocket. I’m not sure the world needs more Starlink satellites but it is a cool sight to witness. It’s interesting to see how the rocket changes as it gets higher into the atmosphere. It was already a cool sunset in it’s own right pre-rocket.
With the window open and the breeze flowing through, I hear the calls and songs of birds. A calling pigeon in particular stands out. I love the calls of pigeons in the evening. The sound reminds me of childhood, looking out the window, onto Nature. A flock of birds fly by as the occasional person strolls down the...
Happy August! Here are a few photos from my phone from the last month with neither rhyme nor reason to the theme. Thanks for reading this post via RSS! Let me know your thoughts by sending me an email: rss@thomasrigby.com.
Notes These are some things I learned from the book Circadian Rhythms: A Very Short Introduction by Russell Foster and Leon Kreitzman: While mammals only have photoreceptor (light-detecting) cells in their eyes, other vertebrates also have photoreceptors elsewhere, such as in the pineal gland – sufficient light can...
