The classic – but still important – rule of web design says to avoid labeling links “click here.” It’s one of the oldest web design principles. Tim Berners-Lee wrote about it in 1992; if you visit this link right now, it might be the oldest page you will have ever visited. The gist of it is simple: the mechanics of...
P is for Page While writing online has its function. Its endless virtual space that can be thought of as pages. They aren’t in fact real pages. At least in the physical state, it is in fact a facsimile. Which had me in thought today, while I was reading, twelve months, a rather somber book from Jim Butcher. I kept...
These are my notes from the first few chapters of Refactoring Databases by Scott Ambler and Pramod Sadalage. The book was published in 2006 and its examples are a bit outdated, but the underlying ideas translate well to modern Rails applications where migrations serve as the primary mechanism for schema evolution. A...
Now, April 2026: everything tends to happen at once Why is it, that everything tends to happen all at once? I had the feeling that the past few weeks have been either very quiet, or too busy—like an on/off switch. This may not be objectively true, but subjectively, February felt okay, while March and now half of...
The Assistant Commissioner, driven rapidly in a hansom from the neighbourhood of Soho in the direction of Westminster, got out at the very centre of the Empire on which the sun never sets. Some stalwart constables, who did not seem particularly impressed by the duty of watching the august spot, saluted him....
reactormag.com The Flood was originally in development at Netflix, but in November, The Wrap reported https://www.thewrap.com/zach-cregger-sci-fi-movie-the-flood- netflix- theatrical/ that development there had come to a halt when Netflix would not commit to a theatrical release for the film.Well... I've been...
2026-04-17Limited permission was granted to use photos taken for these events on this site.Hello! I'm realizing that so many things I use are coded with artificial intelligence. Especially with Anthropic's Claude, which was caught destroying millions of books in the name of science, and which was defended as being...
It’s a weird state to be in with my work feeling like a vocation. I love doing it, I love making progress on Pika, and I’m super grateful to be in this position. Yet there are some things I enjoy in life that I can’t seem to find time to do these days. I see movies, but not as many as I’d like. I’d like to spin some...
Shadow...
Since I started going to therapy (and probably even before then, but not consciously), I have been using a very effective metaphor to describe the recurrent, uncontrollable, and sudden change in perspective in my life. Sometimes, briefly yet not too rarely, I see my life as a movie of which I am the main character....

My brother’s backyard has a small strip of dirt that is a hotbed of tectonic and geothermal activity. It is prone to severe weather events (dust storms), explosions, mudslides and the occasional meteor strike. Earthquakes, geyser and volcanic eruptions, dust storms, and various natural disasters occur with frequency...
A few weeks ago I went up to see that MAGA friend.🙄 I had written about her in the past, but after an unrelated post brought in some unexpected traffic, I unpublished that post about her since it suddenly felt too personal. Long story short, I have complex feelings about this person that goes a bit deeper than...
In the previous installment of Tomi Adeyemi's West African inspired magical high fantasy, the story ended with a cliff-hanger that cut short a rolling boil. The last book in the trilogy wraps everything up neatly while adding more complexity — a bold move for an Act 3 novel! Spoilers aheadThere is some discussion of...
April 2026. Sheffield. A Saturday in Sheffield before, we hoped, a last hurrah cleaning the old house in Waterbeach. I did a walk out over the hills to the Botanical Gardens, where I brought Dad 5 years ago on his only visit to Sheffield. He’d given up golf the previous years and was struggling to walk the gardens,...
Over the past month, I've looked at quite a lot of blogs. Each one is a bit different. Of course, the design and the contents differ, but what I'm most interested in is the structure. Most follow the "time stream" format, with the posts arranged in reverse chronological order, plus some individual pages (home,...
Anyone who knows even a little bit about bird-life knows that there is a kind of understanding between wild geese and tame geese, regardless of how different they are. When the flight of the wild geese is heard in the air and there are tame geese down on the ground, the tame geese are instantly aware of it and to a...
The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) has announced its 2026 class of fellows, and two philosophers are among them. They are: Corey Barnes (Northwestern University) for his project, “Race’s Shadowy Subjects: Conceptions of Race in Early Black Intellectual Thought”: This project reconstructs early Black...

My personal realmlet just got renovated! Although it still keeps a similar theme and responsive design as the previous one, it now uses a single-column layout. Before: A two-column layout with a navigational sidebar on the left and main content on the right. After: A single-column layout with main content right...
Quoted S04.E07 – Victor Watches Jack White Hit the Eject Button by Charles Zona with Victor V. Gurbo (Seeing Them Live With Charles Zona) And I don't play things the way that they are written to which I go back to a Dylan quote where he said, I never play my songs the same way twice. ' cause I can either remember,...
This post was brought to you, unintentionally, by the number eleven. It has been seven years since I wrote about chasing my parkrun Nearest Event Not Done Yet (NENDY) and yet it is still something that I really enjoy about experiencing parkrun. It’s great to hop in the car, stick on a podcast, and drive to a suburb...

I’ve talked far too much about AI and how the world is going to shit on my blog over the last week and a bit. Let’s have a blog cleanse. I mentioned this on my Now page, but over the Easter weekend I treated my mum for a big birthday to the Primate Experience at the Welsh Mountain Zoo, and I wanted to share the...
When is AI image slop ok? By Gordon Mclean Gordon stumbled across a post arguing that AI-generated featured images signals laziness, even if every word you write is your own, and it made him stop and think about his own blog. Read post ➡ This post piqued my interest, and surprise suprise, I have opinions. 🙃 I've...
“We must live it, now, a day at a time and be very careful not to hurt each other.” Along the spectrum of losses, from the door keys to the love of one’s life, none is more unimaginable, more incomprehensible in its unnatural violation of being and time, than a parent’s loss of a child. Ernest Hemingway (July 21,...
I. The Day The Bubbles Popped A year and more done passed since last I cracked a Diet Coke, and the time has now come to shuck my damn corncob free of the Dr. Pepper that took its place as if it were a different Doctor altogether, perhaps from far Gallifrey. The hardest part has been breaking my powerful association...
Came across a site called DI.Day. It’s currently only available in Deutsch, with English possibly coming soon. It purposes that every first Sunday of the month is “Digital Independence Day”, where people are encouraged to break free from Big Tech. The artwork and designs are bold and welcoming, and of course, I’m...
Following on from yesterday's experiment with webp I got to thinking that it might be handy to add a wee command to blogmore.el that can quickly swap an image's extension from whatever it is to webp. So v4.1 has happened. The new command is simple enough, called blogmore-webpify-image-at-point; it just looks to see...
These days, I am preoccupied with: 1) painting every day for plein airpril; 2) uh, that’s kind of it, actually, I thought there would be more to this list. PleinAirpril This is my third year of participating in PleinAirpril! It’s an art challenge to paint every day of the month. Despite the name, I am not actually...
This is my entry to this month Bearblog Carnival :) I love this topic, and I've been reading the posts regularly because I enjoy discovering random facts and curiosities. I've discovered very cool animals thanks to everyone entries! At first I wasn't sure about what animal talk about, because I don't have a big...
Oddly – deplorably? somethingly? – my recently acquired anthology of 101 very short poems, Short and Sweet, doesn't include anything by Walter de la Mare. This is a pity, as some of his shortest poems are among his best. I posted a couple a while back: this extraordinary portrait of grandiose paranoia –...
March’s TBR Challenge theme was ‘tropestastic!’, and in genre romance, there’s a long and storied tradition for the one night stand. (Never mind that that’s not quite how it happens here) Either way, while this book has only been on my digital TBR shelves for a couple of years, it qualifies, because vibes. Beware:...
It feels like a long, tiring week because it’s been a busy one, or most probably because of getting back to regular life after vacation, or because Bengaluru has been hot this week. Anyway, its been a busy and hectic week. What better to do when its so hot. Uma started playing football this week. She is just getting...
