Edie's been through a bevy of tests and now we wait for results to figure out the best path forward. ⊕Currently Listening: Harlan Silverman “Music for Stillness”Reply via email

Jehan Azad: When people are in competition, they work harder if the game seems winnable, and decrease effort if they think they’ll lose. It’s implied that because humans are so far behind aliens, we are uncompetitive and so should put in less effort. There’s — somehow — an idea, published on Marginal Revolution,...
Life is hard. Today, when opening Anki on macOS: DbError { info: "SqliteFailure(Error { code: DatabaseCorrupt, extended_code: 11 }, Some(\"database disk image is malformed\"))", kind: Other } Database corrupt? What is this, are we in the 2000s? Goodness. I have automatic backups enabled. For 4 years I haven’t needed...
Mood: Melted. There is no other word for it. There is a practiced but familiar rhythm to my life that usually only I can hear. It is the rapid-fire thwip-thwip-click of a screen reader, the frantic, synthetic heartbeat of my phone as I navigate the world at five hundred words per minute. To anyone else, it sounds...
Replied to Why your files are slowly dying by Wojtek Powiertowski (behindtheviewfinder.com) But even if you have copies everywhere there's a quieter problem that nobody warns you about. Your files are degrading right now and you probably don't know it. Wojtek Powiertowski wrote a pair of interesting blog posts on...
2026-04-07Hello! My homepage is getting boring, with all the landscape-oriented photos with the exact same aspect ratio. I oughta add a portrait of someone. This photo is near Washington Crossing, on the New Jersey side. But the bridge to get into the state park was blocked off. They were doing a prescribed burn on...
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here in daily posts. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. LinkedIn hidden code secretly searches your browser for installed extensions, Cyber Security News. The amount of information that can be extracted from installed extensions is...
I've released an update to BlogMore, with another little straightforward addition. This time I'm revisiting the statistics page and adding a streak tracker, of sorts. Modelled after the GitHub contribution tracker, or indeed any number of other streak trackers, it shows which days in the recent past I've blogged on,...
My blog relies on SourceHut (aka sr.ht) Git repo and Builds (their continuous integration/CI, like GitHub Actions). They’ve been down for around two days and I couldn’t deploy my site to my static host, Bunny Storage (this is my affiliate link, I really like them, thanks for your support!) This triggered me to...
I mentioned in my last post that I’ve been experimenting with different ways of digital drawing, leaning towards a more opaque painting style for colour than I usually would. I’m enjoying the results. My obsession with birds continues. This was painted using Sketchbook on my tablet, with heavy use of my own photo...

I was on my analytics page the other day, one of my quiet routines. Not for numbers, not really. More for the referrals. It's one of the last honest ways to discover corners of the internet that aren't trying to sell you something. Plus, it's intriguing to see where and who all sees our small smoke signals we all...
Marginalia Search Introduction Marginalia Search is a free and open source search engine developed and operated by Viktor Lofgren. It uses its own web crawler to build its index independent of any other search engine (contrast with many options that use Google’s or Bing’s index). It is useful for finding small,...

I stumbled across this great post by Spencer Mortensen yesterday, which tested different email obfuscation techniques against real spambots to see which ones actually work. It's a fascinating read, and I'd recommend checking it out if you're into that sort of thing. The short version is that spambots scrape your...

How, I wonder, do you form a whole life? What I mean is, how do you knit your individual bits and pieces into a coherent person? For years I worked in public education (14 as a junior high school principal). That became a central part of my identity. People would introduce me as, “This is Jeff, he is the principal...
I’ve been putting together a small app, and trying to make it very very good. I’m coding the whole thing1 myself because I enjoy the challenges that come with logic coding, and find writing SwiftUI code pretty fun and fast. It’s a SwiftUI utility to create Mesh Gradients, which are not intuitive to create manually...
When the first manned flight to Mars is deemed unsafe and scrubbed on the launch pad, anxious authorities must scramble to save face and retain their funding - and so an unthinkable plot to fake the mission is hatched. Great sci-fi movie of the 70s, it’s pretty much the cornerstone of conspirationists around the...
“There is nothing more revealing than to see a thinking person walking, just as there is nothing more revealing than to see a walking person thinking… Walking and thinking are in a perpetual relationship that is based on trust.” “I: how firm a letter; how reassuring the three strokes: one vertical, proud and...
You might’ve already heard a lot about it by now since it’s gotten quite popular the past few months, but I have some things to say about the XTEINK X4 and how it’s become one of my favorite gadgets. If this is the first time you’re hearing about it, the X4 is an affordable mini e-ink reader roughly the size of a...
I am happy to share a new open source project I have been working on: @kylereddoch/eleventy-plugin-mastodon-share. You can browse the source on GitHub and try the live demo. It is a small Eleventy plugin that makes it easier for people to share posts from your site to Mastodon. If you have ever tried to add Mastodon...
April (finally !) 2026. Manchester to Tyldesley. You learn a lot about the UK transport networks as a pub ticker. Some towns stand out as tough to tick, particularly the string of mining towns without a railway station between Manchester and Wigan. Thanks a bunch, Mr Beeching. But this very week celebrates a decade...
vulture.comAudiences said ‘I do’ to the rage-bait-y rom-com, making it A24’s third-highest-grossing opening to date.I honestly did not see this coming, even with the high opinion and known quantity that Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are. The movie just didn't seem to really be connecting to its marketing. And while...
We rolled out adaptive light-dark() support on our design system themes and it’s been a delightful upgrade. Creating light and dark variable sets isn’t difficult, but delivery has trade-offs. Most apps that do this probably ship both sets of token values in a single stylesheet. That’s fine until you have multiple...
I was inspired by, of all things, a video monologue by a Scottish surfer [1] who said that the future for them was challenging themselves in new ways. My guitar was close by and I thought maybe I should give myself a bit of a challenge too. I picked up my guitar and looked up a tutorial on how to do finger picking....
I got to meet some pagans irl, I'm pretty excited so I'm telling you *heart*. Anyways, first of all in deities, we now have a page for Hyytämöinen and Lievetyinen (winter and summer). Then, I translated plenty more myths: Runosong competition against Joukahainen, The Knee Wound of Väinämöinen, The Song of Vipunen,...
(image courtesy of titsay) gosh, what else do i have apart from the spiralling recesses of the depths of my own mind, and these scattered words on a page? i've felt a growing sense of otherness, as i've returned to my "real life". it's hard to look back on or place a finger on exactly what this feeling is, except a...
Tim Urban published 15 Wait But Why posts in 2014, reaching millions of readers with long-form explorations of AI, procrastination, and human psychology. Then he started a book. In 2017–2018 combined: one post. Seven years and 2,440 days later, he self-published What’s Our Problem? No predatory publisher forced...
Every now and then, I have these moments where, for some reason, I suddenly start to marvel at really banal things. I don't know what causes it, but it feels like my threshold for what counts as "normal" or "unremarkable" gets lowered for a few minutes and even everyday things start to feel truly wondrous. For...
It’s been 10 days since the last one of these link dumps, so this one is particularly long. Sorry! Hello, World, taken on April 3rd by Artemis Ⅱ mission commander Reid Wiseman. Artemis Ⅱ launched while I was in Geneva last week, and flew by the Moon yesterday. I’ve been following along with these tools: Patrick...

I was watching the Artemis II flyby last night. So of course I am rather tired today. I really like dashboards – I’ve been looking at the one for Artemis II by Canadian Space and it is rather fancy. Now I want my own for whatever kind of data I can think of. Obviously that means I need a TRMNL. felix schwenzel seems...
Wen considered the nature of time and understood that the universe is, instant by instant, recreated anew. Therefore, he understood, there is in truth no past, only a memory of the past. Blink your eyes, and the world you see next did not exist when you closed them. Therefore, he said, the only appropriate state of...

Richard MacManus wrote a piece last year titled “Replanting Articles: Bring Legacy Posts to Your Website” and it resonated with me before I even got to the text. It’s exactly what I’ve been doing since relaunching my site last year. In addition to writing new posts, I’ve been digging through old favorites that used...
The trial of Jonathan Caravello, a lecturer in philosophy at California State University Channel Islands, begins today. The trial concerns his actions at a protest during a Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid of a cannabis farm near the university. (See this earlier post.) HuffPost reports: When a...
Thanks for the tip. A week off work, dominated by having a streaming cold for a few days and a catastrophic failure of my home network drive, resulting in multiple days of effort to get it up and running again. All last week I had felt as though I was on the cusp of getting sick, but it never quite took hold of me....
I grant myself the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking this world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that we can make...

A primeira provocação ele agüentou calado.
