(image courtesy of an unknown artist) i don't believe there exists a world without light but the eyes of the mind can be blinded by it. the sun's golden ochre, shimmers at the long corridor's end. yet deep down, i know that no life exists there. a facsimile, a victim of suffocating silence, chosen many years before....

A thoughtful 26-minute talk by Imani Joy, the solitary full-time designer on Mastodon, reflecting on her nine months there: It’s an interesting peek behind the curtain at designing for this particular space, and the many unenviable constraints: lack of data, care for privacy, tension between Mastodon’s power-user...

There was no Pook-Emu Bee links yesterday because it was newsletter day. But I am back early this Sunday morning (before I go to bed) with the first edition of the Pook-Emu Bee for the new week. 1. The Bird of Paradise you want is NOT the best one to grow in your house (Alex Calamia for News 12 Brooklyn. March 18,...
Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life; dream of it; think of it; live on that idea. Let the brain, the body, muscles, nerves, every part of your body be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success, and this is the way great spiritual giants are produced. ~ Swami...
I visited the San Francisco Bay Area twice last year, and meant to write about my trips but never got around to it. I figure I’ll never write that post at this point, but I still would like to share the photos I took, so here they are. Caltrain train! train! train! Stanford University I took the Caltrain to Palo...
Playing with FreeBSD What’s all the fuss about FreeBSD? What is it, anyway?, I remember these thoughts going through my head, sometime last year. There were quite a few people posting enthusiastically about FreeBSD on the Fediverse. Having used Linux for many years, I was vaguely aware of the idea that BSD is some...
Download PDF In 1953, Samuel Beckett wrote a play where two men wait for someone who does not come. They insist he will, they reorganize their entire day around his imminent arrival, and then, when he doesn't come, they calmly agree to return tomorrow, because tomorrow, obviously, is when he will come. Maybe. They...
Realised I’ve not updated my “now” status in a long, long while. Right now, geographically, I’m in Penang, the island where I was born. My ancestors have been here for more than a century. Sometimes I feel that the island calls to my blood – at the risk of sounding dramatic. At this exact moment, I’m typing this at...
I enjoy installing and playing around with old operating systems. Granted, I don't do much with them once I got them installed, but I like having a look around, checking out the integrated software and just seeing what it feels like to use this OS. The other day I wondered if I could run the first versions of...

“People wish to be settled; only as far as they are unsettled is there any hope for them.” “Cut short of the floundering and you’ve cut short the possible creative outcomes,” Denise Shekerjian wrote in contemplating the capacity for “staying loose” that many MacArthur geniuses have in common. “Cheat on the chaotic...
Personally, I’m open to retrying AI use cases every now and then. I’ve written about it before, and I freely share the fails and wins in chats I am part of. In my case, it’s no use to endorse it based on hype online, nor to try it once and keep my opinion fixed on that experience. I’m expected to engage with it...

March 2026. Mulheim. Cologne. Our last night of three in Cologne, time for a gig out in the slightly edgier suburb of Mülheim, the only place we’d see much “diversity” (most of it in Turkish kebab shops). Seven minutes on the train, 25 15 minutes walk to our show at the Palladium. Doors don’t open till 8; plenty of...
IP addresses are assigned by ICANN (from above). In Reticulum, you can announce yourself to the network, only if you want. You can arbitrarily decide if you agree to be a transport node. Good uptime and connection with manu other nodes. Reticulum nodes in Metro line E between Rotterdam and Den Haag
Yours truly, holding the sign I made for the No Kings protest today. It reads “Níl aon rí i Meiriceá,” which means “There are no kings in America” in the Irish language.
Related to yesterday’s post, I want to list a couple of quick and easy ways to get “a small win”. Simple things we can do to shift our mood. Most of the things on the list are pretty obvious when you read them, but I still find it helpful to have a menu to choose from. So here we go: Breathwork Our breath is one of...
Spring has always been my favorite season. New life, green grass, blue sky, flowers, rain—what’s not to love? Of course, it’s not all roses and sunshine: my allergies go nuts this time of year, and when we lived under a mockingbird for a while, we learned that they sing for all hours of the night, and here in...
It’s my first time coming across another Chinese IndieWeb user! They are a digital art creator and blogs (in Simplified Chinese) about Japanese anime, art, and computer technology. V1sta made some IndieWeb 88x31 buttons and drew this IndieWebCamp (IWC) girl character/illustration with a FOSS program called Drawpile....
Chilling, heart wrenching, as well as disturbing. I recommend it but only if you can handle this. 4 stars
This morning, I watched The Spectacle (via Johannes Kuhn), a 20-minute documentary and debut by Yasmin van Dorp. The New Yorker is presenting the film and asks Has taking the perfect photo ruined tourism? But the documentary never explicitly comments or judges. It shows us stunning views and the people who inhabit...
I was having a conversation with somebody last night. We were thinking about the last movie we went to see in the cinema. My last cinema visit was 10 years and three months ago. I really don't have attention span to watch a movie. I get bored as I think I could be doing something else.

Note: This post is inspired by ava's art feelings and Vaudeville Ghosts make bad art, found on the discovery feed. Around two years ago, I found a funny radio play called "Professor van Dusen" in the audio library of the German public broadcaster DLF. It's ... I don't want to say "a ripoff", but ... a "heavily...
Where is everybody? We are here on earth, where life started approximately four billion years ago. Single-celled beings. Living things. We evolved further, into two cells. Four. Eight. And eventually, into an unimaginable number of around 30 trillion. Made possible by a star that has been here with us for the whole...
“On This Week” section I wanted to add an “On This Day” kind of thing to my website for a while, but even though I have made almost 600 posts as of the time of writing, I still have plenty of empty days where I’ve not made a post. A In any case, the solution was simple, do it by week and call it done. I found a post...
It’s been a busy month so we are going to pretend like nothing has been missed over these last couple weeks because we’ve published some amazing stories for our special month of March. Here’s everything from March so far and we’ve still got one more big story to come on Tuesday. 🌒 Moon DramaAshlee...
On February 4, 2025, I published Emojam and Emoji Story-Telling Memories. The article was prompted by the Emojam, a Japanese “pager” for kids which only allows for messages made up up of pre-loaded emoji (see Emojam report). I only spent a few sentences on the Emojam itself before segueing into a story from my high...
2026-03-28Hello!No, I don't know what's at the end of the tunnel. Probably more light. How different public spaces (especially shops) are designed tells you a lot about their intention. Compare this clean mall to the bright and colorful displays in the toy shop. I can almost imagine that the toy shop display was...
Here’s the paradox: As Australia adds more solar and wind power, wholesale electricity prices are falling dramatically. But many consumers and businesses are paying more, not less. How is this possible? The answer lies in a hidden cost structure that most people never see—one that punishes those without the right...

The Quiet Room at DrupalCon mtift Sat, 03/28/2026 - 10:05 At DrupalCon Chicago this past week, Dries (the founder of Drupal) borrowed an idea from Fred Rogers.
