Two colleagues are planning a project. The English speaker says, “We will finish by Friday.” The Mandarin speaker says, 星期五完成 — literally, “Friday complete.” The first sentence is unremarkable in English but ungrammatical without the auxiliary will; the second is unremarkable in Mandarin but would sound telegraphic...
How to get a Gemini capsule with its own domain name.
Added a Glossary which I should've probably started with, lol. Added information about Saari in Locations. Added information about Juoletar in Deities. Added myths of The Island at the Center of the World and Birth of Kaleva, the ballad of the Golden Wheel Oak, and incantations for Löyly and Shrove Tuesday. Added...
On a fresh installation of Firefox on MacOS, right-clicking an image while some text on the page is highlighted (to show as many buttons as possible) looks like so: Freshly installed Firefox, right-clicking To be blunt: holy fucking shit, what the fuck is all of this shit? 26 rows of which 2 are greyed-out (aka:...
I'm missing my cats SO MUCH... Idk what it is. Last year I spent 3 months here at my auntie's and I didn't feel like that... Maybe it's the notion that I don't really know anymore what's gonna happen.
Update: Found the culprit, see here: https://akselmo.dev/posts/they-broke-my-server/ My site https://scalie.computer/ just broke. I don't know what happened exactly. I was just minding my business and went to check on it. It had crashed for some reason, the postgresql server/docker/thing was erroring out like a lot....
og post: https://spice.bearblog.dev/on-being-talentless/ Keep in mind I am just a random stranger from the Bearoverse who subscribes to her blog, and by all accounts I am someone whose opinion can easily be disregarded. But her words landed hard with me this evening. Reading this felt like looking at something...
Replied to Feature: 30 Pokémon You Probably Forgot That Deserve A Second Chance by Tim Rattray (Nintendo Life) While the most popular Pokémon take centre stage for the franchise’s 30th anniversary, I figured space should be made to honour the PokéMisfits that didn’t stand the test of time. These include oddities...
Lieben...
During our trip down in Patagonia last week, we passed by many road signs, barriers at viewpoints, trash cans etc. that were sticker bombed by the many visitors that pass by. Typically, it’s an eclectic mix: People put stickers of their favorite soccer club, there will be large numbers of variants of the “Not Bad” /...
February 2026. Waterbeach. My cousins from North Norfolk came over last week to give us hand clearing Mum’s belongings (yes, it’s a long process). They used to love visiting Sunnyside, and have recently acquired a liking for the Nepalese food at Waterbeach’s White Horse. That view of the gault was from this evening,...

(image courtesy of IllustrationsByMira) i was asked by a clinician today; what challenges me at the moment, right now? right, well; time to take out and fold up my toaststool top from this closet. this was following a conversation that we were having, regarding beginning to work on the more "advanced" steps of a...
I was channel surfing late one night when I came across a local news story about a guy who builds jet turbines for the Air Force at the USAF Research Laboratory in Ohio. Interesting, sure, but what really got my attention was the man's name: Dan Miracle. Not the Dan part. I don't like the name Dan. Never have. My...
Since I completely reworked this website last year, I have been wondering about how to add some kind of commenting functionality. After a lot of experimenting, I decided it was going to be Mastodon integration. I started out with my default Atom feed. It already aggregates all posts from my gallery, library and...
“David Hume was not a Humean.” So says Galen Strawson, regarding the so-called Humean account of causation and what Strawson takes to be Hume’s actual account, in a recent post at his newsletter (a position he has advanced before). Previously, philosophers have told us that Hume is not a Humean about practical...
I was walking through a still-snow-covered Brooklyn Bridge Park on the afternoon of February 13, 2026, when I came across something that I had not expected to see: Geese in the snow. Above, you can see the geese with the Manhattan Skyline in the background. Geese are common sights at Brooklyn Bridge Park. I have...
Batman Forever website, launched May 1995. If 1994 was when the Web became a publishing medium, then 1995 was when the Web truly marked itself as a unique expressive medium. The Web became a place — a destination — rather than a mere repository for documents. In previous posts, we've seen how web design elements...
[GM’s note: No prices are fixed right now. Eggs are still changing hour to hour. Do not call attention to this. “Winter 2025 Gustation” maybe?]Appetizernettle orechiette, date, goat cheese, sabacarmelized beets, whipped ricotta, coffee reduction[Solid twist on a classic. But with the 10% blanket tariff on coffee and...
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here in daily posts. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. A phone that’s also a lighter, Engadget. Oukitel’s WP63 is one of those bulky cell phones that people take into the woods, with a giant battery (20,000 mAh), flashlight, and a...
How I vibe-coded a simple catalogue appFor the longest time, my Blu-ray collection was catalogued on a spreadsheet. Compared to heavy-hitters on r/4kbluray and other corners of the physical media loving internet, my collection is unremarkably small (around 250 titles at the time of writing), and my spreadsheet...
https://github.com/tw93/Mole: 🐹 Deep clean and optimize your Mac. This is what I had envisioned cache_prune to become. I deleted my vibe-coded script. mole does much more and seems to be well-maintained. — § —Reply via email#dev #macos
I received some good news about my job today. I'm just grateful to have a job in the first place, but it's nice to know my contributions are valued and are making a difference. It made me realize how starved for good news I've been. I've gotten used to bad news. In my extended family. In my community, state,...
Apple Photos...
lucas.loveI just learned that friend of the Variable, Lucas, developer extraordinaire, developed the Monologue app for iOS, taking the initial concept and prototype that was vibe-coded based on the Mac app and turning it into an absolutely killer iPhone app. Still not a huge fan of the extremely AI bullish Every,...

Blue Prince is a game I have not heard about until recently. If it wasn't for the AGHS top 25 games list, I would have never heard about it at all. And what shame that would be! Luckly, I'm still have the borrowed PS5 and its owner also wanted to play, so he ordered it to my flat. And so I've tried the most...
“Time is a river that sweeps me along, but I am a river,” Borges wrote. “Time is a fire that consumes me, but I am the fire.” Most of us are not Borges. Most of us are drowning in bewilderment at where the time goes, burning with the urgency of being alive while waiting to start living, wandering the labyrinth of...
March is not halfway done, but I ended up collecting a lot more doodles than I thought, so here they are. I finally finished Pirate's button, it was kinda hanging over me since January, so I'm glad I just sat down and made those frames for the button. Ever since Zeina changed her blog's name, I've wanted to sort of...
I last wrote about my smart home setup all the way back in 2023, so I've taken the time to fully update my setup. This time around, I've decided to do it as a slash page and I'll just update the page as needed. Link -> /smarthome/ Reply via email · Discuss on Mastodon · Discuss on Bluesky
"Stay indoors" they say and "avoid the windows" Cower, then, in the dark drink poison from your fear as you regret all the times you did not stand up for honour To live in freedom for a day to mix my sweat with this land that I would not trade for an eternity in their comforts
“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a woman in possession of an expansive pantry must be in want of a cookie.” There. That’s the first line of my autobiography. It’s destined to be a bestseller. Or at the very least, something people buy in an airport because they’ve lost the will to live and it has a shiny...
I’ve discussed this plenty over the past year, but I do want to mark a milestone: I first started tracking my weight with a spreadsheet and a line graph on March 10, 2006. At the time, I was working at a beauty company, surrounded by people who routinely looked their best. It was motivational for me to drop the 10...
I already share links every time I do week notes, but I still read quite a bit of things on my FreshRSS instance and thought I’d share some more thoughts on articles and things I found interesting today—maybe yesterday. Just some musings here for you guys to enjoy, check out the original posts as well, of course....
I published my list of defaults last time in 2023, but a few things have changed since then. Inspired by Bud Spencer’s comment, here it is, my list of defaults as of 2026. Not a drastic change, but to make it a little easier to parse, I annotated the new things. If you are curious about the hardware, like a good...
The bit where Jakevatar hops up and walks along that little rock-fence with no trouble despite being a new-bornéd peep is so good; he’s got a tail now! Of COURSE his balance is better! Siri, get me data on how many furries have inner-ear problems ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ ⦁ So these avatars are not actually Na’vi, right, they’re...
I am writing about a few paintings to help me build my description skills. My analyses are not formal or comprehensive. If nothing else, I hope that you enjoy the painting that I feature! The warm colours in Monet’s The Church at Varengeville (1882) stood out to me the moment I saw them in a corner of the Courtauld...
Trigger warning: Everything you’ve seen in the news + mental health and anxiety School shootings are not common in the country where I live. In fact, we can count them on one hand and still have fingers left over. When they do happen, they’re a true anomaly because guns here are not easy to access. Still, back in...
A very slow film festival Have you heard of the Self-Published Fantasy Blog Off Contest? (SPFBO)? Now it its eleventh year, it's a contest where three hundred self-published books are selected at random to participate in a book death match! I entered my latest book, Reflections Upon the Anniversary of My Descent...
I’ve known for decades that most of family and friends (except for family and friends in tech) have no idea what I do — they just think it’s math-heavy and mysterious. Well. It’s definitely not math-heavy and it shouldn’t be mysterious. So I figured I’d write up What I Do. Even if I never actually send this page...
AutoDescriptor: Added page description via AutoDescriptor bot A short while back, I used to believe that [[Blog/2026-01-10/The Impact of Fake Video is Overrated|The Impact of Fake Video is Overrated]] because people will just believe what they will and there's nothing you can do about that. But I was entirely wrong...
I'm excited to share two streaming assets I made for pichumilktea's Twitch channel. It includes a Starting Soon screen and a Be Right Back screen of her original character.
DIY Home Network with OpenBSD, OpenWrt, and Pi-hole 2026-03-03 This post includes a full breakdown of my entire home network stack. My goal is to make this as accessible as possible for newcomers to jump right in and build out their own home networks. Important! I highly recommend reading through the entire tutorial...
I know we’re probably collectively a bit tired talking about macOS Tahoe, but I just noticed something that I think is a good example of how small details can ladder up to bigger things. This is macOS Sequoia (the pre-Tahoe release) and a typical pop-up button: One clever thing macOS has been doing since basically...
