How Python and Kotlin provide structured concurrency out of the box while Go achieves the same patterns explicitly using errgroup, WaitGroup, and context.
Select a directory from a list, and play all the music files in that directory. How difficult can that be?
I have been seeing a noticeable increase in unwanted applications showing up on client endpoints lately. Not full-on ransomware. Not always an obvious infection. Just the annoying middle layer: adware, PUPs, and browser junk that eats time, breaks trust, and quietly expands the attack surface. WaveBrowser,...
Days without turning off site blockers: 4 Day 10 already! ... And I'm coming down with something. I don't know how bad it will be, but hopefully not bad enough that I won't be able to log. I've just been puttering along and listening to this song on loop on my mp3 player. My mp3 player. I got it for $20 on Aliexpress.
It's quite possible that today was my last visit to NUE before our move to Denmark, and I'm happy that I'm ending my time there on a high note.
Will you point me in the direction of the perfection store? I need a new dosage. Weaned off an affliction and desires to shine the silver cell cage I keep myself in. My hands are grey with the countless attempts to catapult into unattainable completeness. A place that is far from real and even further from human....
Hello, friends! This is a post for those of you who have been very gently (and not so gently) helping to get the gears in my head grinding, and to start getting the words popping out on this here book I’ve been poking at for a bit. I thought I could do a double whammy with this post, both giving a little progress...
A nice moment spotted in Slack: By definition security and usability coexist wearily, so it was nice someone thought about allowing me to do this at an opportune time, rather than at a random moment that might be extremely untimely or stressful.#got your back #security
My fellow ADHDers understand how obsessions will POUNCE on you from NOWHERE and then you CANNOT SHAKE THEM even though you have a CLASS to teach today and also you're supposed to be REFEREEING A CHILDREN'S BASKETBALL GAME this evening but all your brain wants to do is OBSESS OVER THE OBSESSION (which is not PORTABLE...
A panorama of the original factory buildings (1904) of the famous Japanese porcelain and ceramics manufacturer. Although most of Noritake’s manufacturing still takes place in and around Nagoya, the original factory site is now a park, museum and shopping mall. ...
It's the third vomit post. I am partly excited about my ability to keep the momentum—it may be beginner's thing—and partly in doubt whether I can sustain this. After all, it is not a small commitment because writing is an art, and to learn it, one needs to push oneself with regular practice. I still have guilt for...
Area 11 is fronted by "Diggy Hole II" vocalist, Thomas "Sparkles*" Clarke who sounds so much like Frank Turner I had to check he wasn't. Inspired by anime and J-Rock, this Nottingham hard rock band throw out high octane pop-y inoffensive rock songs that aren't pop-punk, hard rock, British indie, or heavy metal but...
One of my uncles is taking care of our family durian plantation, with a dog he rescued as a stray a year ago and named Bak Baan after the mahjong tile 白板. My parents and I met Bak Baan for the first time in 2025's Lunar New Year. When we saw Bak Baan the next time in 2025's Qingming Festival in early April, Bak Ban...
Excellent Bugonia Easter egg, Letterboxd. (I’m not sure what I thought of the movie, but I like the font!) I’ve got Peacock for the month (go Olympics!), and now I realize it just might have all of the Yorgos Lanthimos movies. Can one brain handle catching up on Bugonia, Kinds of Kindness, The Favourite, and The...
I just came across “I Verified My LinkedIn Identity. Here’s What I Actually Handed Over.” and thought it might be worth sharing It’s a story of someone just wanting the “verified checkmark” on LinkedIn. Quite legit, right? Just that – afterwards – he started to check which companies his biometric data are now shared...
Valentine's Day included pouring over a slew of goodies Casey's mom sent up that included a little love sign and heart shaped pasta. We were delighted by every single element.Currently Listening: midiwan Takyadam (feat.
February 2026. Banner Cross. A rare trip out to posh (but not snooty, oh no) Banner Cross in Sheffield’s West End, to get Ian his new GBG tick. He wasn’t rushing to leave for the bus back, with the terrifying prospect of a pint with BRAPA at the end of his journey. I feel obliged to find something new, if not shiny,...
Hello world. This blog post is being dictated by Superwhisper. I’m not writing any text at all. Every word that is coming out was dictated one by one. Frankly I have no idea whether this works effectively or not, but apparently Superwhisper seems to be a good way to make it faster to type in words with your mouth...
You got to get them while they're young! The Kid liked the first Star Wars quite a bit, so we watched the sequel. The Wife had huge objections (it's too scary!), and she was almost right. However, The Empire Strikes Back is, simply put, amazing. What was a kind of dumb tale of guys fighting with glowing sticks,...
I always like to try new ways of reading RSS, so of course Current seemed interesting at first. Alas, the first blog post looked a bit too wank-y and learning that while it proudly proclaims to respect a user’s attention it doesn’t seem to respect a user’s data management really put me off the whole endeavour. Reply...
The old philosopher, whose name was Martin, embarked then with Candide for Bordeaux. They had both seen and suffered a great deal; and if the vessel had sailed from Surinam to Japan, by the Cape of Good Hope, the subject of moral and natural evil would have enabled them to entertain one another during the whole...

I’ve been asked a couple times just this week how passkeys work, here’s a little rundown! What passkeys are and how they work The “sales pitch” for passkeys is that they’re like a password that you will never know, and can never leak. They’re fully attached to your device of choice (phone, computer, Yubikey, etc)....
Apparently my RSS Feed was not displaying full post content - just the title - making people have to click through to the actual post on site. It should now be fixed and full posts should be available in your feed reader of choice (you are using Elfeed in Emacs, right?) Thank you to katabex, Sneed1911, and...
I've been meaning to write a short review about this short book. It is not an exciting read. But it is a very good read. The prose is somehow simple, yet powerful. It flows, it drags you, it gets you stuck in time with her. You feel you are stuck in time as you read. When you put the book down, you return to the...
Today I learned about Apotris. My first impression? Fuck! Fuck is this good! When I started developing I didn’t have the ambition to create the best Tetris clone out there. But I was convinced I’d have a few novel ideas at least. Turns out my ideas aren’t as novel ;D Even the cooperative multiplayer is something...
“The alternations between love and its denial, suffering and denial of suffering … constitute the most essential and ubiquitous structural feature of the human heart.” “The state of enchantment is one of certainty,” W.H. Auden wrote in his commonplace book. “When enchanted, we neither believe nor doubt nor deny: we...
The best thing that happened this week This week it was carnaval in the southern part of The Netherlands. As I'm originally coming from somewhere where they don't celebrate carnaval, I don't really celebrate it now either but my daughter is brought up with it. We went to see parades and my daughter went to a party...
No, your blog should not have comments. Or at least, you should not feel as though it has to have comments. The comment section is famously the vilest part of any webpage (except YouTube, for some reason); while I do not aim to tell you how to run your site, I do not think anyone who isn’t ready for the muck of the...
Because my day job involves U.S. immigration law, I regularly stay on top of new precedent decisions of the Board of Immigration Appeals (“BIA” or “the Board”) in my feed reader. On February 13, 2026, I read a Board decision that had been published that same day, Matter of Jin, 29 I&N Dec. 441 (BIA 2026). The...
I recently posted about how you shouldn’t write for length. But I don’t think you should write for brevity either. Instead, get every thought you have on the page. Then, go through each sentence and reduce it to its essentials. cut, cut, cut When you’re finally happy with the result, read it again. This post wasn't...
We got Mac at the same kitten adoption event as Polly. They were not from the same litter, but they both were kittens when we got them. We named him Mac, as in mac and cheese. We often call him Big Mac, Mac Daddy, Big Daddy, or Ole Floofy Boy. May 28th, 2025 Richmond VA. I would describe him as a medium/long-haired...
I feel somewhat fortunate not to have children, and deal with the challenges they face with peer-pressure. I read, with interest, Kevin Quirk's post about giving a mobile phone to his young son. It made me think about the ever-present expectations from kids, and the burden it places on their parents. As a child, I...
[Equations in this post may not look right (or appear at all) in your RSS reader. Go to the original article to see them rendered properly.] I thought some of you might be wondering about the dimensions on this drawing from yesterday’s post: Don’t be offended—I trust you all to know why the horizontal components of...
Dick Davis, one of our finest living poets (and translators), has always published sparingly. If and when his complete poems are published – and they really should be – they will not make a fat volume. Davis favours short forms, including epigrams. Here is one of my favourites – On EpigramsThis neat, egregious...
The Sam Vimes theory of socioeconomic unfairness, often called simply the boots theory, is an economic theory that people in poverty have to buy cheap and subpar products that need to be replaced repeatedly, proving more expensive in the long run than more expensive items. —”Boots theory.” Wikipedia, last modified...
In this world of endless streaming, we own nothing anymore. Nothing. Our digital music library, so carefully curated over the years, is nothing more than fairy dust blowing somewhere through the cloud. The movies we so dearly love are available to us only as long as they generate enough money or until licensing...
I've been diving deep into historical and theological study but neglecting my spiritual life. I've been reading from the scriptures every day, but spiritual practices like prayer and meditation have kind of taken a back seat. I'm going to try to change that. Prayer has been hard for me. It's been hard to feel like...
February 20, 2026 The security issues impact Live Server (CVE-2025-65715), Code Runner (CVE-2025-65716), Markdown Preview Enhanced (CVE-2025-65717), and Microsoft Live Preview (no identifier assigned).[…] Also, it is advisable to remove unnecessary extensions and only install those from reputable publishers, while...
Read Ramona’s story, On the way to forever, on Foofaraw now!Why a centipede?I had considered other animals for Annika to turn into, like a bear or a wolf. Something more in line with a typical fairy tale story. But I thought the visual of her turning into a centipede would be more interesting and it would allow her...
Uma loves singing. Recently, she has been humming I wanted to create a karaoke version of it. Since the video already had the lyrics embedded, all I needed to do was separate the audio into vocals and instrumentals using musicara. And then remove the original audio and add the...
With measures borrowed from history’s totalitarian regimes, political leaders in Florida are taking unprecedented steps to indoctrinate students and prevent them from learning about the world in ways that may lead them to question the leaders’ ideology. The State University System of Florida’s Board of Governors...
