Our family in Minnesota knows we worry about them, and so yesterday they sent a family-wide email. This is surely one of many thousands like it. Maybe you’ve written one of these. Maybe you will write one of these. Below is the email from Jen (with permission and with original formatting): Update from MN Hello...
Over the Christmas break, a time of consumption for the sake of commerce, I found myself thinking of all the brand spanking new tat destined for landfill after, at best, one use. I buy decent quality stuff secondhand whenever possible (which is getting easier every year) and keep it for a long time. It got me...
I just finished my last pocket notebook ... :( one day, I'll create a tutorial zine including how much it costs

The Midwest is expected to have very cold temperatures this weekend, which got me thinking about burst water pipes. Water expands about 9% as it freezes, and a lot of people think it’s pressure from the outward expansion of ice that ruptures pipes, but it’s more complicated than that. My favorite reference for this...
As years have stretched on, browser user-agent styles have grown somewhat estranged from how many developers use the web platform. I am no exception to this rule and find my own needs at odds with the predefined user-agent stylesheets of major browsers: Chromium -...
This is an excerpt from my journal. I comment on how exposure to nature helps me understand my place in the world. Winter is the most quiet time of the year here in my mountains. The ever-busy swallows left us a few months ago. I enjoy their presence during the spring and summer months. Every evening they fly all...

One of the hardest realizations in life, and one of the most liberating, is that our mothers are neither saints nor saviors — they are just people who, however messy or painful our childhood may have been, and however complicated the adult relationship, have loved us the best way they knew how, with the cards they...
All the translated watercolours in the four volumes of "Gli Abiti de Veneziani" by Grevembroch, as galleries for easy browsing.
This eclectic collection is a cabinet of curiosities from the world’s languages, literatures, philosophies, and subcultures—a mosaic of forgotten words, sharp idioms, and poignant phrases that capture the human condition in all its absurdity, beauty, and precision. Here you’ll find ancient echoes (haruspicate,...
I have been reading Dead Souls by Gogol and I noticed his very liberal use of metaphors.
DuckDuckGo, the privacy-focused alternative generalist search engine which relies on Bing for its traditional search results, offers an alternative “no AI” version of DuckDuckGo at https://noai.duckduckgo.com/. I turn to the About noai.duckduckgo.com page for a feature (or non-feature) summary: If you’d prefer an...
Yesterday I attended a Code Jam event organised by the EdinburghJS community. During the event, I met many wonderful people. At one point, someone asked me to share my LinkedIn, to which I responded that I’ll share my website instead. I stopped for a moment to consider that this was a conscious decision. I want to...
This may seem like a clickbait title, but I really wonder if this is a trend because I saw a book blogger ranting that she’s fed up with books being released today and she’s going back to read classic fiction and finding more satisfaction there. It’s kinda me too. Currently, I am reading (extremely slowly), Strange...
We have it good now. M-series Apple chips, amazing AM5-based Ryzen CPUs, NVIDIA GPUs that can power a program that you can talk with that can pass the turing test. We have it good. But back when we had hardware limitations that were seriously fucked, we didn’t have the resources to build huge machines, nor did we...

This morning Radio 3 noted the 65th anniversary of the first performance of Francis Poulenc's Gloria, in Boston, by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The ever chirpy Tom McKinney marked the occasion by playing the first two movements of the great work (the second of which, 'Laudamus Te', was inspired, according to...
I read a few posts around personal websites and how to make it easier to make one, and a common theme emerged: the existing tools to create one’s own site (mainly referring to static site generators and self-hosting) are too developer-focused. Things that developers can do may be too much of a barrier for...
I already bought propane and shelf stable food a few days ago. I started washing all the laundry today and will get all the dishes and stuff cleaned by Friday. That's when the temps are supposed to tank and we get 2+ inches of ice on everything Saturday. That's probably normal for this time of year up north but down...
I've taken photos of glasses in various states of fullness before, but never mined this trope before today. But there was light this morning and the glass was just sitting there on the counter.Currently Listening: Surfbort “Jessica's Changed”Reply via email
January 2026. Widnes. From a morning in Liverpool to mourning in Widnes, as Peter is laid to rest with his parents. “Anyone for Widnes needs to move to the front carriages” says the nice guard in his guttural Mersey accent, confirming that the station doesn’t have a long platform, but it’s the only one they’ve got...
The most popular link last time was this handy printable calendar, with with Lena Dunham on her mum's style second. There have been many Heated Rivalry takes. This one — The Truth About Yearning – is the best one I have read. I haven't watched the show yet, because I'm saving it up for the next time I have to take...
Why there’s no European Google? And why it is a good thing! With some adjustments, this post is mostly a translation of a post I published in French three years ago. In light of the European Commission’s "call for evidence on Open Source," and as a professor of "Open Source Strategies" at École Polytechnique de...
A wildly fascinating 12-minute video from the always-hilarious YouTube channel Map Men about the reason for a surprising black spot that could be seen on Google Earth until 2012. Reading the Wikipedia entry after watching the video adds extra color to the mystery, turning it more squarely into a “software quality”...
Last October, I took the time to share some updates about PETI, which at that point was more a project-in-concept than something I was hands-on-keyboard “working on”. That’s not really true anymore; over the last couple weeks, I’ve been actually working on our favourite virtual pet again. Specifically, on the new...
I often find something that still doesn’t feel 100% right. These days, it has been the cold start and the choke. After the bike came out of restoration, it had a cold-start problem. The usual solution was to use the choke without throttle, and that mostly worked. During the recent six-month service, I complained...
I recently rebuilt my site, and this gave me an opportunity to rethink how to organize its contents. Vertical architecture Most websites have what I consider to be a “vertical” architecture. This is probably based on early websites being essentially public file servers with files contained in various folders. With a...
Bastiaan “Bas” van Fraassen, professor emeritus of philosophy at Princeton University, has been awarded the 2026 Rolf Schock Prize in Logic and Philosophy. The Schock Prize in Logic and Philosophy is bestowed by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA). Winners each receive 600,000 Swedish kronor (approximately...
Active, an experiment underway. I am considering that everything, at most is an experiment and so scientific procedures are engrained. I am not in control of anything, maybe besides my attitude. The world is not pushing and pulling me along the tides of daily life–I am an active participant. Variables are present...
Khaire! It's Helios'es morning His chariot up soaring. I send my thanks to spirits of home, For keeping us under protective dome. Artemis, my dearest Mother, hear my pray, I thank you for this sweet winter day. Lastly I send my deepest regards, To all present Spirits and Gods. ~ Written on: 22 January 2026 ~ Written...
One of the trickier things in software is gradual degradation. Development that happens in the wrong direction slowly over time which never triggers any alarms or upset users. Then one day you suddenly take a closer look at it and you realize that this area that used to be so fine several years ago no longer is....
MTV VJ Adam Curry in 1993, the year he took to the Web with MTV.com. Photo via WikiMedia. Any history of web design has to begin with the first graphical web browser to go mainstream: Mosaic, later to be renamed Netscape Navigator. At the beginning of 1993, college student Marc Andreessen wrote a message to the...
United States of America, A.D. 2026. In addition to Jonathon Ross murdering Renee Good, the very same day they went to a high school and attempted to arrest students and staff. One day after this, 6 men with guns kicked in the door of someone’s home without a legal warrant and dragged the husband out in cuffs. He is...
Tuesday nights are always busy at our house. I took my son to his volleyball practice and then to a local card shop where he plays the One Piece Trading Card Game every week. These mini-tournaments can last anywhere from an hour (when he doesn’t do well) to much longer, like last night, when he did do well and a lot...
This most likely the last Aviationtag I bought while in Germany. It's also the nicest one in my collection. It's a GLARE edition, so it's a thick little sandwich. The color is more like mustard rather than gold, which I actually prefer.
The world is complicated. I like the #DID campaign – regaining your digital independence step by step. Like changing from X to Mastodon or from Chrome to another browser. For me, the next logical step was reconsidering my browser choice. Firefox was the first choice, but then I wondered: why not Vivaldi? A Norwegian...
A lot of unspoken assumptions underlie the whole "AI thing" right now. But I think the biggest is that LLMs think like we do. We jump to this conclusion almost immediately, because LLMs generate plausible-reading text. The LLM sounds like a person, so it must think like a person, somehow, right? We then end up...
For those who follow along with my ramblings, you may recall my relationship with the Kagi search engine. On testing it, I loved the idea but was on the fence about paying for my search results. After the trial I returned to my more traditional DuckDuckGo experience. I quickly missed the very focused results from...
Currently I use as my productivity working device a Tuxedo Laptop, the Infinity book pro 14". It is about 1.5yrs old and started acting up in december when it comes to battery. The Battery sometimes was overnight discharging to 0% even the laptop was powered off. Also it showed a reduced maximal capacity. In Linux...
January 21, 2026 I have a folder of quotes I've collected over the years. This morning, while reading through a few, one stopped me: Instead of constantly hunting for blog topics and maintaining a never-ending list of ideas, I'm trying a new approach. Rather than forcing ideas, I'm focusing on writing only about...
