“I’ve never felt my speech was so chilled as it was in the classroom at UATX.” That’s one student quoted in an article at Politico by Evan Mandery that describes how things have gone at the University of Austin (UATX). UATX was announced in November 2021 as a “fiercely independent” institution of higher education...
The Computational Web and the Old AI Switcharoo For two grand I can buy a laptop with unfathomable levels of computational power. Stock, that laptop comes with silicon made of resistors so impossibly tiny, it operates under different laws of physics. For just a few hundred dollars more, I get a hard drive that...

Some of you may of course think what, only 20,000 commits after almost thirty years in the project, what kind of slacker is that guy? But yes, today I merged my 20,000th commit into the curl repository – out of a total of 37,604 commits (53%). Not that anyone is counting. 20,000 – Today, January 17, 2026 19,000 –...
Once upon a time, a few mistakes ago, I wanted to start a blog series about doing projects with my two Raspberry Pi units at home. The initial post described my vision, but it was never followed upon. There was a mix of reasons for that: lack of time and proper prioritization being overwhelmed by choice a desire to...
TL;DR Standard prediction models will focus on polling momentum, scandal exposure, debate performance, and macroeconomic shocks. These matter, but they’re second-order variables. The constraint structure of Columbia’s election determines what range of outcomes is possible; campaign events select within that range....
A little update on my side. The friend who borrowed me a PS4 a few... years ago is taking a longer vacation on the outskirts of Asia. As a result, I am now a temporary house for a Sony Play Station 5 (and a plant). I'll read less, watch less, and the time is limited and there are games to be played! Therefore, I am...

Like many others, I seem to have amassed a number of domain names over the years, and I just can't seem to let go of many of them. Currently I have 48 registered domains. Some are for projects which are current; others for old projects I've closed down but love the name; and some are names for an idea that never...
In Search of Meaning This is my contribution to the Indieweb Carnival of January 2026, which is hosted this month by Jeremiah Lee. The theme chosen by Jeremiah is “The Meaning of Life”. Isn’t it strange, that we rarely think about the most important question we could ask ourselves: “What is the meaning of my life?”...
Sometimes things just click. Then when you reflect you realise that the thing clicked because of many things all coming together – that as much as you wanted to advance an idea in the past, it needed time.I had one of these moments during the writing meetup I hosted this evening. During the event, one topic that...
Dear reader,After reading Olly’s (the developer of Pagecord) blog post about custom domains, I was finally convinced and moved this blog to a custom domain: moonwriting.blog. It certainly sounds cooler than moonwriting.pagecord.com but I also want to ensure that I always have the option of moving the blog elsewhere...
This package renders an indicator with an email count of the notmuch index on the Emacs mode line. The underlying mechanism is that of notmuch-count(1), which is used to find the number of items that match the given search terms. In practice, the user can define one or more searches and display their counters. These...
Modern art seems to be simultaneously accused of being too serious and not serious enough.
January 2026. Markbeech. Kent. A last new GBG entry ticked in Kent, not too far from either Kentish Paul or the in-laws. Sadly, a flying visit to the Kentish Horse at Markbeech, only a mile or so from the legendary Queen’s Arms at Cowden Pound. It’s also barely half an hour’s walk from Cowden station, though my...

The red berries and frosty green leaves of this Nandina plant really give me the feeling of winter. Taken at the Kyoto Botanical Garden on Kodak Portra 400 film . この南天の赤い実と霜の降りたような緑の葉は、冬を感じさせてくれる。京都府立植物園でコダック ポートラ400フィルムを使って撮影。
Yes, I've combined the DVD's and blu-rays in this post because they are so similar. Obviously not in resolution but in the concept of putting a disc in a device and playing it to watch a show. I grew up with VHS. I'll have a post on those later but we used them up until the late 90's. In high school DVD became the...
About a year ago, I was sitting at a coffee shop late at night, meeting some new people. Inevitably the topic of passions came up, and I stated that I was pretty passionate about tech. “Ah, so you’re a tech bro” was one response, and I almost chuckled. In so many ways I would consider myself the opposite of a...

I’m trying out Niri! You know how I encourage getting used to the defaults? Well I’m not following my own advice! I’m using it with Dank Shell too, also ignoring my own advice! Anyhow! One liner! If Steam isn’t working do this: edit /usr/share/applications/steam.desktop and change the Exec= line to this: Exec=bash...
It’s with a heavy heart that I’m writing this post. Yes, I’m just talking about app icons and yes, I’m being dramatic, but you have to understand that I care a great deal about design. I’ve always loved Apple’s design and that’s one of the main reasons I use Apple products. I even find macOS Tahoe’s Liquid...
Added the page for Sämpsä Pellervoinen, as well as Mielikki and Tapio. I'm not sure if I'm satisfied with the latter and might expand on it later. Also added into on Tapionpöytä in the holy sites.
12th January - 18th January The robins are in full throat. It sounds like 40,000 of them singing the same song at slightly different times; none of it syncs up and the effect is jarring. The dawn chorus, magical as it is, naught but a complete cacophony. I took a long walk over the fields to the duck pond because I...
...I just gotta get Kottke to link to Foofaraw somehow... So if you're the magical person who got this site in front of Jason last week, this is directed at you. Go tell him about Foofaraw, a zine of surreal storytelling and worldly observations, which publishes some of the best short stories, novellas, wacky...
I understand abstractly that the Internet is a global thing (world wide web and all; it’s right there in the name), but wherever I check the analytics page of my account and see where the eyeballs are coming from, it’s a little bit crazy to me. Who are you folks on the other side of the world? No, seriously: who ARE...
I made a game called Code Wave for the recently completed GitHub Game Off 2025! I really enjoy game development, but don’t get to do it often. When I saw that the theme this year for the Game Off was WAVES, I thought that it would be fun to do something creative with it! Before I continue, if you want to play other...
Buying something from the Decathlon website and reached the checkout stage. My inside voice reads this as completely sarcastic.

Arthur Morgan bumper sticker blog lore drop: i had a dream where Arthur Morgan put a hand on my shoulder and said, 'you know, it don't have to sting'.
I’ve been hunting for a screenshot tool that’s actually good for GNOME, and I’m pretty sure I found my new go-to: Gradia. I’ve been using it for a while now, and it’s fantastic. You can add notes, highlight sections, add arrows, very helpful when you’re working on documentation or teaching a tech class.
I added a table of contents UI to the most elaborate essays on my site, and then wrote about some of the design details and choices I made there. Let me know if this is an interesting case study! I tried to do something new here with tons of mini videos. At the bottom, I will also be collecting other implementations...
