My favorite television show of all time is The West Wing. Aaron Sorkin is awesome, and most of his stuff is just good. The West Wing is my favorite for many reasons, but I loved it because it dealt with human problems in at least somewhat realistic ways. The good guys didn’t always win. So much of TV drama ignores...
Poundland Chris Evans arrives in town with his adorable daughter in tow and sets up in a local dilapidated mansion. He asks the local contractor to recommend a good interior decorator who just happens to be his ex! Who doesn't know he's a billionaire dad or something. Will they get back together by the end of the...

While the Woodman was making a ladder from wood which he found in the forest Dorothy lay down and slept, for she was tired by the long walk. The Lion also curled himself up to sleep and Toto lay beside him. The Scarecrow watched the Woodman while he worked, and said to him: “I cannot think why this wall is here, nor...

November 2025. Norwich. 10 minutes out from Norwich market along residential Unthank Road to my new GBG tick, a genuine new pub from the Fat Cat stable rather than an old one you’ve walked past a hundred times and thought “Wonder when that’ll get in the Guide ?”. Looks lovely from outside, the interior of this...
Brought to you by an episode of Dear Hank & John in which a listener asks if an objective, ‘scientific morality’ could ever be devised1 ; at one point capital punishment was briefly mentioned as an example of things that some societies think is morally acceptable and other don’t, and it occurred to me that I have a...
Yesterday I was in the wicked city, having lunch with an old friend and visiting the pointillism exhibition, Radical Harmony, at the National Gallery. This display of paintings from the Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo, seems to have had lukewarm reviews, for some reason – I guess it's a style of painting that can...
We walk this earth as bewildered animals trying to recover the divinity within — descendants of the great apes who invented gods to mirror back to us the best in ourselves and bridle the worst, but we are still and always have been our own only shepherds. In times of crisis for humanity, amid the genocides and the...
For years, I relied on Microsoft’s OneDrive — not for the Office 365 suite, but for its 1TB of cloud storage. It served me well for offsite backups and seamless syncing between my computers and phone. I even used the Personal Vault feature, though more out of curiosity than necessity. Later, I joined a friend’s […]

Blessings often come in small packages. Blink, fret too much, or get distracted by the hurry of life and you are likely to miss these little bits of encouragement. An example. This morning, as I was having coffee and reading at my desk, a little Anna's Hummingbird made several trips to the feeder outside my window....
Two friends of mine (brothers, actually) got laid off from their job at a megachurch here in Austin. We met through a mutual friend that started attending their church. Our kids hang out on Roblox, so we’re connected through dadship and games. They oversaw a lot of the music and arts work that went into the weekly...

I just published a short post on The Vending Company’s 2025 snacks and drinks survey focusing on my surprise that Pepsi took the first place ranking over Coca Cola (see survey). I focused on the top two in that post, butt I found another point which surprised me. Diet Coke came in 4th place on the soda ranking,...
Emo relapse in the year of our Lord 2025? Well yes! fall out boyI love Fall Out Boy. I probably love them now more than I did when I was a teenager who dipped her toes into every genre, including emo. There's just something about them that hits every time, especially when they start going on about people you just...
Last week I ran a meetup for writers on the web. During the session, I brought up the topic of distance in writing. [1] We explored the topic in various ways – the distance between writing and publishing, the distance between reader and writer, how distance varies. As I write, I am thinking about the distance of...
What a busy month! Crazy at work, but also a lot of prep went into the last NN1 Dev Club meetup of the year. I’m very proud of how this little meetup idea grew to become a solid community of software engineers from the Northamptonshire area. Luckily, at the beginning of December, we are travelling to Sri Lanka and...
Urban fantasy hard magic I couldn't put this book down! This is the new series from Benedict Jacka, who wrote the Alex Verus series. This book is in a different urban fantasy universe. Stephen Oakwood has a book protagonist's tragic back story - not only did his father vanish two years ago after leaving a cryptic...
Mkdocs is a very popular library for writing static documentation sites with python, and Material for Mkdocs is the de-facto standard theme to apply. With over 71,000 people stating they use the theme, it was a success both in how it was able to generate sponsers for an “insiders” track, and in general usage. Now,...
Dear Ciara, I’ve spent the last couple of weeks patiently sitting in my garden, mostly beneath the lemon tree, waiting for birds to arrive. Birdwatching, it seems, requires significance patience. Some birds have finally begun to use the bird feeder—namely sparrows and munias—but I have yet to photograph them....
This is a small Emacs package that automatically highlights the current line after certain functions are invoked. It can also highlight a line or region on demand. The idea is to make it easier to find where the point is, what was affected, and also to bring attention to something in a buffer. Watch the original...
Like many of us, I’ve become the family IT person for a lot of situations. My grandpa got hit with a pretty good (“good”) scam lately that I’ve had to clean up. His email password was taken, and a bunch of us in the family got emails from him asking for Amazon gift cards (a classic), so we told him to change his...

From “I love calculator” by Andrej Karpathy, founding member of OpenAI: The calculator is incredible. Clayton Errington A Webring is a collection of websites that share something in common with each other. In this case, it’s a static site generator website showcase. Setiap tahun, tepatnya bulan Desember, saya mendeaktivasi akun twitter saya, akun tempat saya mengobrol dengan sirkel teman online yang sudah saya kenal belasan tahun. Awalnya iseng, tapi ternyata jadi kebiasaan.

Or: Why some posts are tools, some are evidence, and some are just interesting The Problem With Judging Things Here’s a pattern that shows up everywhere: the way you measure something determines what you find valuable. The first snow of the season called for a short winter hike — no grand plans, just a quick round in the nearby mountains. Some nice motives, a surprising encounter and a reminder to think about some winter basics were all along the way.
Here’s some stuff I’ve experienced lately (and not necessarily only new releases)...
This morning I was lying in the chair at the dental hygienist. With all kinds of tools, all the gunk that had built up on my teeth over the past year was scraped off. Because it was my first time at this place, I got a goodie bag with some oral care products: little tubes of toothpaste, mouthwash, and even a tongue...

It’s 1970. You walk into the store, grab a bunch of apples, go to the cash register, pay with cash, and walk out. What kinds of data have been automatically processed about you while doing that? Very little. Most likely, none, as CCTV footage relied on the development of VHS to be viable, and IP cameras transmitting...
For seven years in school I had the "pleasure" of learning Latin. I'm putting this in quotes because I didn't really like it, except maybe in the beginning. I was never really good at it and therefore didn't get very good grades, which was pretty demotivating. I loved learning English, as you might be able to tell,...

A lot of people wonder why the kindred cardtype in Magic can’t be a supertype or why it’s even necessary in the first place and I’ll explain that here! Why it’s even necessary! It was decided once upon a time that subtypes belong to specific card types. Like “aura” is an enchantment subtype, “elephant” is a creature...
I'm a little surprised that I haven't already posted this recipe in my recipe format, so this post is to remedy this. Its a recipe from the Longbourn Farm blog that we make most weeks. Although I do use less flour because 8 C makes loaves that are a touch too big, so I also use a little less water too. Basic White...
