I am reviewing this late, but this is the first gear that I bought when I decided to restart motorcycling. I still think that, after you get a decent helmet (in my case, borrowed), you should get a decent pair of gloves. I have never bought or worn motorcycle riding gloves. I have had a pair of regular gloves that I...
Movable Type blog entry template, 2002; via Wayback Machine. In my history of blogging so far, we've seen how weblogs emerged in 1999 as a new form of personal journal, began to link to each other in 2000 via blogrolls, and then turned serious in 2001 with "warblogs." During those early years of the form, I was...
Until now, when you visited a wiki (like en.wikipedia.org), the server responded in one of two ways: a desktop page, or a redirect to the equivalent mobile URL (like en.m.wikipedia.org). This mobile URL in turn served the mobile version of the page. All wikis now serve mobile page views on the canonical domain,...
Since I can remember I've always been creating things. I was thinking on writing about the first thing I created, but then I realized that this is hard to know as it could be the tiniest like a scribble in a piece of paper. Probably my first creation was the result of an assignment at kindergarten of which I have...
panel discussion, beta festival conference, digital depot, the digital hub, dublin, 7th november 2025 I participated as part of a panel discussing the politics of infrastructure at the 2025 edition of the annual art and technology festival Beta in Dublin. As part of the panel I gave a performance using the artwork...
Recently I was scrolling through brson’s Rust quote database and stumbled upon a link to the official Rust tutorial from the very beginning of 2013. It says Rust 0.6 in the corner, but it lists many things that were removed in 0.6, so it’s likely closer to 0.5. I heard tales of old Rust before, but not of how the...
Read on the website: The concept of text editing word is inflexible and outdated. We need better.
I read my writing that was lost in the weeds. I couldn’t recognize my words. It was objectively good. Where do I keep this version of myself? She was around in May but what else was happening then..? I wasn't online... so where was I? breaking hearts, claiming souls pre-summer embrace Now, the dusky-short days are...
This year, my partner and I hosted a friendsgiving for her friends, and I committed to cooking the turkey and use my mom's lovely cornbread dressing recipe. My mother has always signle-handedly prepared a traditional little feast at our house, even when we were kids and lived in a country that has no Thanksgiving...

I don’t care much about monitoring the traffic here, but analyzing web logs seemed like a good way to practice using Pandas. I used some old data analysis friends, like groupby, and made some new ones, like the vectorized str functions. I also reacquainted myself with rsync, which I used to run quite often in my...
📚 Book 24 of 2025 - Finished: Midnight Rain by Haley Cass (5/5⭐) I’ve known about this book for a while but kept putting it off. The special thing about Midnight Rain is that it’s an alternate ending to Haley Cass’ book Those Who Wait, following one of my favorite sapphic couples, Sutton Spencer and Charlotte...
The Shai-Hulud npm worm is back, and the sequel is nastier. Security teams are tracking a new wave branded by the attackers themselves as “Sha1-Hulud: The Second Coming.” It builds directly on the original Shai-Hulud npm supply chain attack from September and pushes the blast radius from hundreds of packages to...
On the cusp of the snowy doorstep, I felt a child-like excitement. I wanted to run outside and embrace the snow — the first proper snow, as we would say here, in at least a year. This is the kind of snow that will lie on the ground., I thought. The snow flakes were thick, leaving a white blanket over the whole...
This was a weird week. As you may remember, I had a day off last Monday which I used for a bunch of gaming and I didn’t bother to write my weeknotes on time. But well, now the time is up, and I shall recount the happenings and progress made, it felt like I was lazy all the time but also not? I don’t know. 🏭 There...

With the greatest respect to Hollie from whom I have nicked adapted this rating system. Ranking Meaning 🎄🎄🎄🎄🌟 •chef's kiss• 11/10 no notes 🎄🎄🎄🎄 Hits all notes of the formula but in an enjoyable way 🎄🎄🎄 Perfectly serviceable Christmas film 🎄🎄 Adequate attempt but probably too cute or confusing 🎄 “You make...
This is my 200th post in 2025. There’s still over a month to go in this year, so I’ll have more. When I started this blog, it was going to be nothing but books. I wanted a place where I could talk about books I’ve read, what I was going to read, and other book related things. If you go all the way back, which you...
Didn't go to the movies today, but the light was so nice on the Esquire. I went down the street for a veggie bowl that featured a new hot sauce.Currently Listening: Boards of Canada “Music Has The Right To Children”Reply via email
You wouldn’t have bet on it, this battered rock orbiting a star from the discount bin of the universe, you wouldn’t have bet that it would bloom mitochondria and music, that it would mushroom mountains and minds, and the hummingbird wing whirring a hundred times faster than your eye can blink, and your eye that took...
From my biography of C. S. Lewis, The Narnian: There was a bright spot in the Lewis home during at least part of the war: her name was June Flewett, and she was one of the many thousands of children who were evacuated from London and housed elsewhere as soon as the war began. The Kilns had taken in four schoolgirls...
I love Obsidian and am ever so grateful for the Obsidian community’s contributions to make a great software even greater. While I was learning how to use Notebook Navigator, a fantastic community plug-in by Johan Sanneblad, I took notes. I’m actually a technical writer by trade. So, I thought it would be a great...
[ This is of interest to users who want to create a new theme on top of Modus (for private purposes or as a package). ] The current development target of the Modus themes includes the function modus-themes-generate-palette. I have updated the manual with a detailed, step-by-step guide on how to use that function to...
The gas boiler in our house has definitely been on its way out over the past few years; not only that, so have several of the radiators, and having lived all spring with them off to prevent leaking, the looming onset of summer’s end, meant it was time for decisions. The cheapest option would have been just to...
How do you nice people reading my blog handle your Github account(s)? I’ve had my “main” account @lostfocus for ages and used it for pretty much everything I needed to do on Github. Now with my current employer our accounts are put into the SSO system, so I created a second account which went through a couple of...
fx is the new jq (via): I’m a longtime user of jq, but its language is… not intuitive to me. I spent a lot of time searching for prewritten jq programs I can use, or reading the docs trying to figure out the exact thing that I want to do. Mostly, I think to myself “why do I have to learn a new language to manipulate...
November 2025. North Walsham. Norfolk. A first visit to North Walsham (pop. 12, 829) since 2018, a good year for City fans. Manchester City fans, that is. The half hour trip from Norwich was “enlivened” by young lads discussing the Canaries terrible form. “When we played Portsmouth we went 3-5-2 with an overload and...
I can’t tell if he’s trying to start a fight or is just scratching an itch with his buddy’s antlers.
“The basic framework I’d like to suggest is the one I used for my Foundations project: pick a defined area of improvement, and make a focused effort at improving your knowledge and behavior over one month… I break down the process of conducting a month-long sprint into four parts: Choose a theme. Take action. Get...
New links… “It is not uncommon to open an analytic philosophy paper written during the past century and find logical symbols and mathematical notation among the prose… Why do analytic philosophers do this?” — Richard Pettigrew answers “Much to many philosophers’ chagrin, the true can and does come apart from the...
Mood: Like finding a bird that can finally sing. The morning felt like a bruise. Not the sharp, immediate kind, but the dull and aching throb that settles into your bones and makes the air feel smothering. I canceled all my accessibility meetings for the morning. I didn't have the bandwidth to explain-for the...
The four travelers walked up to the great gate of Emerald City and rang the bell. After ringing several times, it was opened by the same Guardian of the Gates they had met before. “What! are you back again?” he asked, in surprise. “Do you not see us?” answered the Scarecrow. “But I thought you had gone to visit the...
Carvana hauled away the Niro today and I am now about $13K richer.Well, I was, until I then spent $1500 on an extremely well-regarded ebike. Currently it’s on Black Friday sale for $1300 with an incredibly generous bundle of accessories (all things I wanted to get anyway), and I upgraded the seat. Then tax brought...
I just published a survey of NBA championship defenses from 1983-84 through 2024-25 (I started with 1983-84 because that was the first season the NBA used its current 16-team playoff format). By “championship defenses,” I mean team stats for teams defending their championships. These stats include relative defensive...
