New to the series? Start here. Why this matters MFA stops a lot of bad days. Losing the device that generates your codes can be...
Kev A look at why small, personal websites don’t need big-tech static hosting, and how a simple local build and rsync workflow gives you faster deploys, more control, and far fewer dependencies. […] It got me thinking about my fellow small-web compatriots, their SSG workflows, and why on earth so many rely on...
I've never liked my birth name. In my mother tongue it means "Love" and it always felt like a mockery of me. I didn't have a lot of luck in my love life, and/or in loving myself, until recently. So my resentment towards it really grew in my young years. Now I honestly feel neutral about it, I simply got used to it....

When it comes to blogging there are few rules. Write content that is somehow meaningful might be one of them though. I think it’s down to the individual to determine what constitutes meaningful. In the hey-day, the so-called golden age of blogging, there were plenty of people prepared to offer definitions of...
Chinese mythology is presented with really nice graphics. The story line is simple—a fight of good vs evil. It's full of magic and demons. Its one time watch and deserves 3/5 stars.
Last week I was doing some work in a field of our family’s Christmas tree farm that borders a neighbor. They have quite a menagerie of animals — chickens, goats, sheep, a horse, rabbits, goats, pigeons and greyhounds. In addition, they have a couple Great Pyrenees dogs that keep an eye on the “zoo.” The Pyrenees are...
I have been listening to a podcast interview between Ezra Klein and Brian Eno. In it, Eno referenced the concept of the “premature sheen.” I stopped what I was doing, paused the podcast, and started to think about what those words meant.I wanted to learn more about the concept, so I searched for “preamture sheen” on...
terraformer: CLI tool to generate terraform files from existing infrastructure (reverse Terraform). Infrastructure to Code In other words: “reverse terraform”. I was quite excited to add this project to my tool belt, as it can save a lot of time with scaffolding and terraform import commands. Then Claude Code, once...
Welp. Here we go again. If you haven't been paying attention to social media lately (and for the sake of your mental health, I hope you haven't - ye gods, the world...) I got laid off in the last week of October without warning. A not entirely unprecedented early morning meeting rapidly turned into being told that...

I was inspired by a recent article to undertake a survey of NBA title defenses. Below, after an introduction, I will examine the team stats of every NBA championship defense from 1983-84 through 2024-25, finding the best and worse in various statistical categories for the regular season and playoffs. Project...
Days ago I watched a video from one of my favorite YouTube channels: flowlotl, where she talks about her experience being a quiet person, it really resonated with me and it made me think about my experience. I was part of friend groups at school but I would spend time alone too, starting from middle school I felt a...
I've been treading water the last months, spending too much time on Linux computer setups and other things that clearly does not speak to my core wishes of simplicity. Lately I've been reading books on Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger, and one thing that I deeply respect from them both is their ability to be...
It was some time before the Cowardly Lion awakened, for he had lain among the poppies a long while, breathing in their deadly fragrance; but when he did open his eyes and roll off the truck he was very glad to find himself still alive. “I ran as fast as I could,” he said, sitting down and yawning, “but the flowers...

Updates from the bridge: Khem's post on AI Fatigue really hits home for me and how I feel about the space right now. It also reminded me of The Hog. Used some birthday money to buy a telescope that my son and I can use; I'm pumped about it 🪐 Update on my Linux desktop journey: I did some research on X11 vs Wayland...
You're looking for the Place. Not a special place, or an important place. The right place for yourself. A place that means nothing to anyone else, but that completely fills the nooks and crannies of your being and lets you hold on to the world as firmly as is possible for a human being. A place that is like it was...

LLMs are expensive 2025-11-20 I just burned through $5 of OpenRouter credits to solve one programming task (editing existing code inside Zed), and it is not done yet. I used Claude Sonnet 3.7-thinking and Claude Haiku 4.5, and yeah, it just blew through everything super fast.

Five months earlier, the university had begun an investigation into allegations of harassment against him. [Balliol College. Photo by Stuart Bebb.]Those details are revealed in an...

In one of my classes we’re about halfway through The Brothers Karamazov, and we had an interesting conversation yesterday in which we tried to sort through what Ivan means when he says he has a “Euclidean mind.” One of my students rightly pointed out that my own explanation of the phrase did not seem to fit all his...
Went to a local indie theater and had a great time watching I Saw the TV Glow!
SF StandardWhen I pressed Foody on his utopian vision, and why he thinks tech companies won’t hoard the spoils of the AI boom, he waved his hand and described a future in which everyone has $10 million in purchasing power, lives in a nice apartment, and works only if they want to.Oh yeah, because every 22-year-old...

Except for a short period when its original developers were unable to keep up and the app suffered badly, Castro has been my podcast player for many years. Its triage system of managing podcast episodes fits well with how I listen. Unfortunately, Castro has been giving me trouble in recent weeks. It often fails to...
A friend reached out with a dilemma. He lives far away from the meeting place of his religious community. They use Zoom to broadcast their meetings for those who can't attend in-person. For many reasons, he avoids using proprietary software (software that is not free as in freedom), but he was seriously thinking...
Merriam Webster's Word of the Day for this November 19th was serendipity — a great nugget of a notion that "refers to luck that takes the form of finding valuable or pleasant things that are not looked for, or to an instance of such luck."Currently Listening: Mad Keys, Tamuz “Delight”Reply via email

Love is a fire that takes two to keep burning, but one to extinguish — if the hearth of either heart is too damp with doubt, both wake up one day to find their hands cupping ashes. And yet when two people have loved each other and parted, the fire is forever embering between them, however great the distance in...
November 2025. Brighton. A few new GBG entries along the Sussex coast, so let’s follow up Eastbourne and St Leonards with everyone’s favourite bit of London-by-the-Sea. Brighton feels a major city these days, with a Top 10 Premier League team and some of the highest parking charges in Western Europe, though the...
Photo: Justin Frankel Last night, a man named Justin Frankel walked into my living room. I was sitting at my laptop, trying to edit my podcast. He came in uninvited and just slapped me hard. He didn't use his hand, though. Justin wouldn’t waste time with that primitive approach. He used software. Specifically, he...
There is a line from a scene in Community (my favourite TV show) that seems to live rent-free in my head: And who the hell are you always texting? Everyone you know is here. I am reminded of this scene almost every day when I look at cars passing by my kitchen window and see that the majority of drivers, slowly...
The most popular link last time was this anti cosmetic surgery essay, with this piece about how to include kids at gatherin gs without centering them second. Rachel Cooke, a wonderful journalist who I got to edit occasionally when I worked at the New Statesman, died last week at the wildly young age of 56. This...
Your computer runs tons of processes in the background, and pulling a plug out of a socket when it is in the middle of something is not a good idea. Doing that to your running service is also pretty risky, but this is precisely what happens when you terminate your running server via ⌃ + c (that sends a SIGINT...
